The True Legend Intense!
At my first sniff, I immediately thought, I know this direction from somewhere... and it’s good. REALLY good, as it soon turned out. Because after a strong citrus-fruity opening in the first minute, the Aviator maintains a slight fruity note and quickly develops into a very harmonious scent that reminds me of Montblanc Legend. And it just keeps getting better - with every hour.
At some point, I got the impression that the Aviator is indeed the true Legend Intense, in the sense of being more mature, distinctive, and adult. Because the French version lacks the almost sweet fruitiness of today’s Montblanc and instead impresses with more bite from the fougère-sage corner. Nevertheless, after about a quarter of an hour, they begin to converge. After about another 30 minutes, the tonka bean then dominates both, that soft, warm, slightly creamy yet pronounced "pencil" note. And for those who like it, both Montblanc's Legend and the Aviator are great choices, only the latter is much more intense. Because what I perceive as a weakness in ML is quite strong in the Aviator - the sillage:
With two sprays on a polo shirt, the French superstar creates a sillage in the first half hour that can be detected up to an arm's length away. Only after that does it become a bit quieter and pulls back to about half, but remains clearly perceptible for over 8 hours. The Montblanc Legend runs out of steam long before that, even though the longevity of both fragrances is enormous (they stick to clothes forever...).
Today's Aviator is the one with the "Authentic" addition and should possibly be treated as a younger version separately. Because the larger proportions of citrus and especially aquatic notes can only come from the earlier Aviator...
Its price is affordable and doesn’t quite match the very good quality of the Aviator, whose value is reflected not only in the scent itself but also in its packaging, and is therefore worth mentioning: Even the box has a special texture that features two different surfaces, some of which are embossed and appear lacquered. Furthermore, the beautifully designed bottle has a heavy metal cap that closes with a distinct click.
Conclusion: The Aviator is unexpectedly high-quality and feels like the mature brother of Montblanc Legend, which is lighter, fruitier, and sweeter. On the other hand, those looking for the somewhat "heartier" touch of a tonka bean scent will find it in the Aviator. Nevertheless, I perceive the similarity of the two EDTs to be about 70% (the Aviator with a fougère accord, the Legend with pineapple). Both are very attractive, but the more robust Aviator has a much stronger projection, which makes it the true Legend Intense.
