Intensely committed complex animalic floral
Sampling Pekji Zeybek, an animalic, spicy, minty, greenish floral, described as an animalic fougere, and it’s very much as intense as it sounds, and not in my usual wheelhouse in terms of preferred scent categories. The intensity does wane a little after the opening sprays but the mix remains—from a civet/leather combo to a floral blend to hay and even vetiver, this is a pretty loud, multifaceted ensemble that makes it the most provocative scent of the five in the discovery set that I sampled, easily, and that’s at least attempting to discount the genre entirely. I would say spray carefully, but this undoubtedly makes for a lot more variety in the quintet, even though it’s not for me, personally. It just doesn’t quite come together in a coherent way that I can enjoy it all that much, but the complexity and performance are significant.

Zeybek is priced at $165 for 50ml, the same as the rest of the line, in extrait concentration, and is sold at Luckyscent and other boutiques.

Leaving Myself to the Ecstasy with a Clear Mind
Do you remember how we danced back then, outside under the open sky, up on the stone plateaus in the mountains? The warmth of the sun stored in the rocks beneath our bare feet, the vast sky above us with the rising stars. How you danced through the dry, hay-like grass and the lavender, until its aroma filled the air beneath your feet and became as sweet as forest mushrooms. I still see you before me, your proud posture against the evening sky,
Gentle warrior
With your heart like gold and a rainbow in your eyes
Brave companion
Do you see a world shining in the sky?
With your body dancing like an arrow
Spreading joy beneath your feet
And with that, the wild anise and the sea fennel under your dance, growing more intense, until thousands of daffodils fell from the stars, making your beads of sweat shine and glowing together with the tobacco. Everything mixed in the air with a hint of honey from wild bees, shamelessly, with proud certainty, warm, sweaty leather, licorice intoxicated. Fully awake and with a clear mind surrendering to the ecstasy, you always said, that is the essence. Just don’t start thinking, then you become self-conscious, then your confidence breaks and then it doesn’t work anymore.

I like the scent of lavender, but usually not as a fragrance. Here I love it: The spicy, green-herb-sweet lavender initially leans towards a mushroom aroma. Tobacco and honey come in, then hay notes, later it shifts more towards licorice-anise-fennel. Animalistic daffodil blooms. The whole thing shimmers continuously between floral, herbaceous-hay-like, sweet-animalistic and bitter-earthy-smoky, is definitely proud, present, and passionate. The lavender at the center resonates in all directions, with associations of furry animals, cigarettes, alcohol, and sea fennel on the distant coast.
The namesake Aegean dance, traditionally for a male solo dancer, is found throughout the Aegean, thus having a unifying aspect: Turkish Zeybek or Greek Ζεϊμπέκικο (Zeibekiko). On Ömer Pekji's homepage, it states that the dance is difficult to perform, not only because of the required technique but also due to its expressive, ecstatic character. The dancers are almost always intoxicated to avoid blocking themselves.
A card is included with the bottle that says: “Fellow human” - inadequately translated as “Mitmensch,” here appealing to our shared humanity - Zeybek is said to be a shapeshifter, a fragrance that is about self-acceptance and pride; it will accompany its wearers in different forms before the bottle is empty. And now one should leave all these words behind and simply wear it with a clear mind. Like dancing.
-----
In my mind's eye, dances from very different countries and continents overlap here, Turkish and Greek Aegean, North America... Although the Sirtaki is the “wrong” dance here, I also think of the proud, sweating Alexis Zorbas, who says “I never loved a man more than you.”

Thank you to Rogaux for the bottle swap!
The text “Gentle Warrior” is from the song “Brother Warrior” by Kate Wolf.

A slightly animalic, yet warm and sweet spicy-earthy Fall fragrance, balanced by a bright spicy-green opening. Nice lavender-tobacco combo!

A green and aromatic fragrance with a dry-down of raw leather with a touch of lavender. Good job but it's not my cup of tea.

Clearly marked by hay plus herbal lavender, tonka adds its touch. Animalic, rather subtle and very delayed.

In Southern Germany, licorice is called bear poop: there's plenty of it here & the whole bear too. Unsweetened, edgy, animalistic - Wow!

Stable boy, comes to me after work and keeps working, working, working. Pure niche, not for designer lovers. Striking, wild oh yes!

The evening of a summer day in the lavender field, sun-warmed hay, whispering breaths of animals, a single daffodil. Being uplifted.
