SHEIDUNA, puredistance
Rose, amber and benzoin...
Judging by these notes alone, one might expect a rich, powerful, thoroughly oriental fragrance. Yet SHEIDUNA is curiously light, like fine sand smoothed by the wind across a dune. In the humid heat of a Tokyo summer, I sometimes find its dry, sandy texture all the more comforting.
There is the brightness of mandarin and the smoothness of benzoin and rose, while patchouli and spices cast a quiet, darker shadow beneath. It is this interplay of light and shade that I find so compelling.
Perhaps because it carries that shadow within itself, there is something remarkably self-possessed about SHEIDUNA. It neither tries to cheer me up nor asserts itself. It simply stays with me, never too close and never too far away. Before I know it, the atmosphere around me seems calmer. On exhausting days, it accepts me with a kind of generosity. On quiet evenings, it turns my thoughts back towards myself. It is gentle, yet somehow dark. It exudes warmth and reassurance, yet retains just a hint of danger.
Perhaps a rose.
Or perhaps poison.
A little dark, and never entirely easy to grasp.
And yet it is a wonderful fragrance that I would always want close to me.
