A Simple Summer Scent
I was warned. Royall Mandarin is said to be the weakest scent in the Royall lineup. I have to agree with that to some extent. All the other Royall fragrances, even the understated Musk, are much more pronounced at first glance than Mandarin. Mandarin is simple, plain, and pleasing.
After an indeterminate citrus-orange opening, a note emerges that, with a bit of imagination, actually corresponds to the scent of a mandarin peel. However, it is not particularly bitter. I notice very little of the promised coriander and thyme. At most, there is a very light, indistinct spiciness. Instead, I perceive a minimal ethereal note as well as traces of neroli, which is very prominent in the classic Eau de Cologne formulation. Royall Mandarin does have a certain candy aroma, but it is still not sweet.
Mandarin is a light, simple perfume, well-suited as a refreshment on a summer morning when the sun is shining, butterflies are fluttering, and the great heat is still taking its time. The comparison with the widely available and stylistically very similar Clinique Happy for Men is obvious here. After this successful fragrance, as I now suspect with my repurchase, may have undergone a quality-reducing reformulation, I can well imagine Royall Mandarin as an alternative. It is definitely worth a test, best compared to Clinique Happy for Men.
