The Living Spice Rack
How can a perfume that smells intensely of allspice (Pimento) and bay leaves be worthy of appreciation? Well, it can, and I still vividly remember an older acquaintance whose eyes lit up at the mention of Royall Lyme of Bermudas Bay Rhum. Especially when he learned that this scent still exists.

Bay Rhum is not only sold by Royall; it is a traditional formulation that is still offered today by some of those brands that, like Royall, are more dedicated to the old-fashioned barber shop style. Parfumo has already listed several Bay Rhums in its database.

Before the macho scents emerged in the 70s, Bay Rhum was the olfactory expression of masculinity. It had and has nothing artificial, no chi-chi and no elegance, but simply a biting spiciness that a man must know how to handle.

Traditionally, the scents before Royall come in splash bottles. The fiddly spray attachment included is a concession to the spirit of the times. That’s not how you use Bay Rhum! Bay Rhum belongs on the hand, which is then used to rub it on the - hairy! - chest.

In fact, this provides a completely different freshness experience than if it were vaporized. The abundant mint, which is olfactorily overshadowed by the bay and pimento, provides coolness. The fact that one walks around for a while like a living spice rack shouldn't scare the worldly man. Bay Rhum refreshes primarily the wearer, and the lady or the other guy by their side just has to deal with it. Since it hardly has the strength of Eau de Toilette, the magic is over after a few hours.

Bay Rhum is a direct predecessor of Gucci pour Homme. But there’s no fuss with refined top, heart, and base notes here - it gets straight to the point, darling. An all-around honest skin that is completely unfamiliar with the fine table manners of perfume tasting.

All one can say about Bay Rhum is - it has something. Although, or precisely because, the composition is totally impossible. One can’t really call it a perfume; Royall's designation "All Purpose Lotion" fits much better. Bay Rhum is one of the good things from the past. A spice scent that is simultaneously fresh and thus more suited to summer than winter. I think it's a noteworthy alternative to common summer scents of the citrus or aquatic kind. Take a hairy chest and give it a try!
