Blessed be what makes hard
Royall is indeed a special brand - they don’t refer to their scents as perfume, but as “All Purpose Lotion.” One might think, a man’s man. Here we have the image of the rugged do-it-yourself type who prefers going to Obi instead of Douglas, and who is more familiar with universal primer, turpentine substitute, Pattex, and colored lacquer than with Chanel and Armani.
Some of the lotions from Royall smell as harsh as the aforementioned hardware store products - foremost among them is their legendary Bay Rhum. With this stuff, the mosquitoes drop dead from the wall, and one can hardly imagine what the resourceful handyman could use all this for.
By the way, this doesn’t mean that the Royall lotions are pure horrors. In their simplicity, especially their penetrating sharpness, they can even be quite enjoyable. Blessed be what makes hard, and with masochistic pleasure, generations of guys have slapped this stuff on their faces after wet shaving. Here and there, you can still find Royall enthusiasts for whom these lotions are still part of the ritual.
In addition to Bay Rhum, there is Spyce, and to be honest - I can hardly tell the difference. While here it’s a nutmeg-clove spice, over there it’s supposed to be a special bay leaf that defines the scent. Unfortunately, I can’t make a direct comparison right now, but one thing can be said: the style is exactly the same.
So Spyce is a true scent twin - if you have one, you don’t need the other. I confess, there’s also a bottle of Bay Rhum in my bathroom, albeit from a different brand. In very rare cases, I feel like this very simple style. What’s good about these lotions is that they are not overly long-lasting. Like Bay Rhum, Spyce also retreats to a bearable intensity - anything else would be unacceptable. Bay Rhum and Spyce are more like a strong pinch of snuff or a high-proof drink of the “throat cleaner” type. Nice that this still exists!
So, if you want to walk around in a particularly masculine way as a spice rack, you shouldn’t miss “Spyce”!
