For eight euros... I thought to myself, you can't go wrong; so I quickly ordered from the big A-Z. The delivery took a bit longer since the little performance bomb STR8 AHEAD (small wordplay) was shipped from Spain to Germany.
I haven't smelled this harsh and somewhat overdriven base DNA or opening in ages, man, I missed it...!
Many fragrances have been/will be reformulated and adjusted to the times or the modern nose, often made more suitable for everyday wear. The harsh and strong notes are usually toned down, made more palatable, and aimed at the broader masses. We have suffered many losses; many base DNAs are no longer what they once were or how we knew and loved them from earlier days, especially the time from the 80s to the early 10s...
Let's first talk about the scent...
The opening is very harsh and somewhat overloaded. A strong woody note, very peppery, and very little bergamot. The woody note strongly reminds me of the newer versions of "Voyage d'Hermès (Eau de Toilette) | Hermès," just with a bit more power. Unfortunately, Voyage has also become woodier over the years and has been reformulated. About a decade ago, it was my signature scent and was noticeably fresher and more elegant, less woody. Unfortunately, another candidate of reformulations... The pepper is slightly overdriven and accompanies the woody note, and in the opening, it is very strict, almost too strict and without contrast. The bergamot sails along lightly but hides in the onslaught of the opening. However, the scent is already perceived as fresh and warm by the surroundings during the top notes. Without mentioning it to others or confronting friends and acquaintances from my close circle with the opening, I wouldn't have thought that and would have definitely interpreted it differently. Memo to myself, don't smell directly on the wrist and make a picture of the sillage; also gladly with third parties who can then act as test subjects :D
In the drydown, the anchors of the harsh notes are lifted, and sage, a light neroli, and a slightly powdery iris come to the fore. I am still searching for the geranium today; it peeks around the corner at most and then disappears again; the interplay in the drydown feels very lightly sweet with a fruity creamy touch, as the bergamot shines significantly brighter and stronger than in the opening. The main players remain the iris with perfectly balanced sage, which is caressed by the other fragrance notes. At its core, the scent hits the UR-DNA of "Dior Homme (2005) | Dior." In my opinion, this is one of the best, if not the best evergreen iris scent I have encountered so far. The same goes for the 2011 version, which has lost a bit of its edge and has been rounded off; the difference is a matter of taste, but there are significant differences compared to the versions that came after the 2011s.
The comparisons to
L'Homme could also be interpreted in the drydown, but it deviates from its DNA, is less powdery sweet, and lacks the sage plus bergamot.
The potency and longevity of Ahead are fantastic for a fresh scent and almost outperform every fragrance that has come under my nose so far. It radiates from morning until late afternoon and only then slowly becomes skin-close; with a lot of movement, it really starts to perform and goes far beyond the afternoon; very similar to "Molecule 01 | Escentric Molecules," which only really kicks in for me in summer or with a lot of movement. A distinction must be made between the opening and the drydown. The opening is very potent and strongly fills the room, while the drydown moves around the wearer at 1.5 to 2 meters. I would spray the scent a maximum of 3 times; any additional spray would be perceived as unpleasantly overwhelming by those around, as it projects too strongly.
It can be worn for any occasion between spring and late autumn. It is an evergreen and does not clash when dosed correctly.
Conclusion
What is delivered here for eight euros is simply incredible and signature-worthy... A very cool scent that dances a disco fox with Dior Homme 2005, awesome! Absolute recommendation from my side!
I love the UR-DNA of Dior Homme, and I had completely erased it from my memory. However, with the first spray, it came directly from my subconscious, and a memory from my younger days shot into my head; that was around 2007, and it goes down like oil; remembering that, looking at old pictures from the time when I was a young man, incredibly beautiful! I just love these scents that trigger these memories and reflect a beautiful time! And it wasn't Dior, THANK YOU STR8!
All the more sad that the newer DH versions no longer manage that because the fragrances have simply been poorly reformulated and seem bland.
