Just Another Cologne?
Many brands are engaged with traditional Eau de Colognes, and so there is lots of choice. The differences are rather small: the spectre ranges between sour lemon and bergamotte on one side and amiable orange and neroli on the other. IMHO every perfume collection is well equipped if it contains just one, maybe two perfumes of that style. Nobody needs more.

However, my collection belies my words – sometimes I simply cannot ignore something that beautiful. Now I have to find a reason why Eton College Cologne should be Kölnisch Wasser No.3, 4 or 5 in one's wardrobe!

As expected, Eton College Cologne is a little bit robust and therefore maybe more masculine than others. This comes from a detectable woody background which maybe has some washing powder musk added. The composition of the citric notes is very balanced – it is somewhere in the middle between bergamotte and neroli. There is a small twist towards green notes, so ingredients like verbena or petitgrain would also make sense to me.

Eton College Collection is simply fun to wear – a refreshment during summer and any other season. There are certainly more refined, but also more expensive fragrances of that style. Generally one cannot expect the highest grade of complexness and refinement from traditonal English gents' colognes, but it depends on one's personal preference if this was regarded as a con. Whoever changes his 4711 against Eton College Collection will render a good service to himself and others: he will be showing some style but not over-refined taste.

The traditional English gentleman colognes are currently a bit out of fashion. You have to look for them. But it is a pleasure to explore brands like D.R.Harris, Truefitt & Hill, Geo F. Trumper or Taylor of Old Bond Street. They are a very good alternative to the global mainstream perfumery.

A Masculine Library Scent
When one just can't get enough. You find yourself in the vastness of the internet, in a shop searching for a beloved fragrance that you can no longer find in stores, add it to your cart, and then continue browsing cheerfully to see if you can save a bit on shipping, and end up discovering one or two interesting-sounding cheapies. A very nasty trap that I unfortunately can never really escape.

A gray box greets me. Silver writing and schematic silver college buildings. Just as unexciting is the standard square bottle with the simplest golden cap one can imagine. On one hand, I do like beautiful, simple flacons, but this one offers absolutely no positive visual appeal.

With the first spray, citrusy fruity notes come forth, quickly followed by delicate floral nuances. A synthetic impression also quickly makes an appearance but fades away just as fast, just a brief moment of a nasty cheap toilet cleaner. However, the fresh-floral impression predominates, bringing a lot of beauty with it. The citrus notes fade away, making room for powdery impressions. And the more the citrus fruits say goodbye, the more soft, sanded woods come to the forefront.

A rather gentle, soft cologne, where no green or herbal ingredients are discernible. Still, it presents a very nice, masculine cologne impression, where (unfortunately) one can also miss the soapy barbershop elements.

Just as restrained as the different scent nuances, the performance is also modest. One might describe it as very close to the skin, but if you spend longer in an office, it does radiate noticeably over time, albeit quietly. Unfortunately, this cologne doesn't last longer than 4-5 hours, then you can confidently reapply without causing a stir in the office or a library.

A true wallflower. Yet exceedingly pleasant and unobtrusive when you don't want to disturb yourself or others. At Eton College, for example, when you're cramming in the library.

From Cologne to Sherwood Forest
Attention, attention!
Among all the colognes at a fair price, we have something special here!
Because this is, in my opinion, a high-caliber hit for the modern gentleman.

It starts with a classic citrus accord that is supposed to be "sparkling," according to the label on the bottle. I couldn't think of a better word for it either. I also perceive something floral in the top note. It rises directly to the forehead and feels extremely bright and fresh.
After about 15 minutes, this modernized Cologne opening dissipates, and the heart presents itself as citrusy-herbaceous. The woody background is now slowly becoming noticeably perceptible.
In the end, a wonderful wood scent lingers directly on the skin, lasting well into the late evening hours.

The sillage is, as is typical for the Brits, unobtrusive and only vaguely noticeable. Therefore, I recommend always adding a spritz of Eton College to the wrist to be able to follow this remarkable transformation of the fragrance throughout the day with discreet sniffing (e.g., when scratching the forehead).

It pairs perfectly with a light sports jacket.

Sensible Revolution at the British Elite University
As mentioned below, I too wondered why one should have more than 2 or 3 good Eau de Cologne that deal with the theme of citrus, neroli, and woods. But there are still some great creations that implement the familiar theme in a super and worthwhile way. Like a great remix of one of your favorite songs. Not that I would make the EdC genre (in the classical sense) my favorite category, but there are indeed wonderful things that make one appear serious, noble, stylish, classic, and more masculine than one really is.

Eton College successfully and modernly interprets the classic EdC theme. It smells delicious, the quotes are exactly in the right place, yet no one would ever come across as outdated. Rather stylish and absolutely fresh. Like a fantastic ultra-modern living room with 60s influences, but with the latest technology.

I naturally smell lemon and soft woods in the background. Sometimes dancing on the edge of the synthetic, but everything is extremely brilliant, similar to, for example, Gucci Rush for Men. Either there are many more ingredients than just the 2 mentioned above, and they are keeping it a secret, or woods and pure lemon simply smell that brilliantly simple and simply brilliant. One could say it's a revolution of simplicity. But I suspect that there is more contained! The whole thing is also slightly powdery, which I like very much!

The bottle resembles classic EdCs much more than the scent itself. Sillage is below average and longevity has unfortunately never climbed above 6 hours!

Overall, one of the best EdCs, but one should not expect wonders in complexity. Rather, it is the fascination of the simple combination!

A fine gentleman's cologne without any fuss. The pyramid is only somewhat sensible. Reminds me a bit of Cool Water, with a herbal-floral musk base.

Highly sophisticated. A bitter citrus-orange on wood, with a hint of floral - I smell lilac. A G-Man, perfect for a suit. Recommendation!

A fragrance that delights with citrus freshness, it reminds me of an older British gentleman strolling through his estate with style.

Citrusy start, gentlemanly scent with a fougère vibe. I smell a calming chamomile note? Relaxed! H/S not good unfortunately :(

Typical cologne with a nice citrus start, but it gradually shifts into a floral, slightly sweet scent.

Cool scent, initially citrusy, then it becomes floral. Unremarkable progression that ends after about 2.5 hours.
