Just Another Cologne?
Many brands are engaged with traditional Eau de Colognes, and so there is lots of choice. The differences are rather small: the spectre ranges between sour lemon and bergamotte on one side and amiable orange and neroli on the other. IMHO every perfume collection is well equipped if it contains just one, maybe two perfumes of that style. Nobody needs more.
However, my collection belies my words – sometimes I simply cannot ignore something that beautiful. Now I have to find a reason why Eton College Cologne should be Kölnisch Wasser No.3, 4 or 5 in one's wardrobe!
As expected, Eton College Cologne is a little bit robust and therefore maybe more masculine than others. This comes from a detectable woody background which maybe has some washing powder musk added. The composition of the citric notes is very balanced – it is somewhere in the middle between bergamotte and neroli. There is a small twist towards green notes, so ingredients like verbena or petitgrain would also make sense to me.
Eton College Collection is simply fun to wear – a refreshment during summer and any other season. There are certainly more refined, but also more expensive fragrances of that style. Generally one cannot expect the highest grade of complexness and refinement from traditonal English gents' colognes, but it depends on one's personal preference if this was regarded as a con. Whoever changes his 4711 against Eton College Collection will render a good service to himself and others: he will be showing some style but not over-refined taste.
The traditional English gentleman colognes are currently a bit out of fashion. You have to look for them. But it is a pleasure to explore brands like D.R.Harris, Truefitt & Hill, Geo F. Trumper or Taylor of Old Bond Street. They are a very good alternative to the global mainstream perfumery.
