An Exotic Name, But An All Too Familiar Smell...
Blue Lotus opens with a dash of moderately sweet, fruity amyris and a touch of smooth vanilla before quickly transitioning to its heart. As the composition enters its early heart an initially smooth before turning moderately powdery yellow floral ylang-ylang emerges as the star with remnants of the fruity amyris and vanilla now in support, with hints of underlying creamy sandalwood rising from the base. During the late dry-down the perfume turns relatively dry and mildly powdery as the vanilla remains, now as the focal note through the finish eschewing its sweetness, with the sandalwood turning relatively stark as it joins as co-star. Projection is below average and longevity average at around 7 hours on skin.

I had heard so many good things about Blue Lotus going into this review that I strongly considered blind buying a hard to find bottle when it finally showed as again available... I am now glad I resisted the temptation as Blue Lotus really isn't anywhere near as impressive as its reputation, at least not to the nose of this writer. Oh it smells pleasant enough, and I confess I have no idea as to what a Blue Lotus flower should smell like, but if this is a good representation, it smells like ylang-ylang with a bit of sandalwood and vanilla mixed in for good measure. There really isn't anything wrong with that per se, but with an exotic flower name like Blue Lotus, one can't help but feel a bit let-down from the anti-climatic mundane development encountered on skin while wearing the stuff. The powder is also a bit problematic to someone like me who is powder averse. It never crosses the line of tolerance, but comes darn near-close. The bottom line is the $165 per 30ml EdP bottle Blue Lotus smells pretty good but unimpressive coming from such a talented perfumer with its exotic name, earning it an "above average" to "good" 2.5 to 3 stars out of 5 rating and a neutral recommendation to most except powdery vanilla and ylang-ylang lovers.

Summer flowers
For this hot, almost summer day, I could only choose him. Floral, spicy, woody. More than feminine. I noticed an uncanny resemblance to Bortnikoff “Musk khabib” but I could probably be wrong. This fragrance that I consider for spring/summer certainly won't disturb and as regards the duration it is more than enough duration. I have received many compliments!

Heady, mature 1980s style yellow floral
Blue Lotus is one of those interesting scents that smell one way on the skin and another in the air. Up close, it is all ylang – sweet, fruity-coarse, woody, with tarry fuel-like nuances. Also making an appearance on the skin are thick smears of labdanum laid out to dry, giving the initial blast a goaty, leathery-balsamic tonality that verges on too much (just like the ylang).

This dense, almost muddy knot of natural essences is familiar to me from other natural perfumers. I’m neutral on this aspect. Teone Reinthal is a natural perfumer of extraordinary skill, so you never just get a hastily shaken cocktail of naturals. There is design here. On the other hand, 100% natural essential oils always want to behave in a certain way. The most you can do is hang back a little, let them play out their little drama.

But in the air? Immediately a different story. Sweet, citrusy yellow florals and resins fizzing like the inside of a Refresher Bar set free into the air. The sillage carries balmy hints of sun cream, lemon pie, baby powder, and a soft, orangey elemi. This is a sunny, ornate accord, decorated with the glitter of resins and polished woods, a specifically Italianate accord of benzoin, lemon or bergamot, elemi, orange blossom, coriander, all over creamed white sandalwood. Though there is nothing in the notes, or indeed in other reviews, to suggest it, Blue Lotus achieves the same general effect as Opus 1411 (UNUM), Kashnoir (Laboratorio Olfattive), and even Iris Oriental (Pierre Guillaume), i.e., powdered lemon sugar incenses.

Ylang brings the sun but towards the end of the ride also a touch of sultry lily-like spice, ushering in a heady, mature 1980s vibe (yes, even here). I find that many of the TRNP carry that grown up, rich 1980s spicy floriental vibe in their DNA. But it remains subtle, a thread of something present but barely perceptible, like the tune from a far off radio. Ylang is really the star of the show in Blue Lotus, but I love Teone’s way of presenting it. I don’t know if this was the original intent, but Blue Lotus is a ylang rendered in a sunlit Mediterranean style that references old Italian cathedrals more than it does the East.

The drydown is a treat for those who are paying attention seven hours on. A pure Mysore sandalwood – dry, aromatic, dusty, almost incensey. Ironically, I sense far more real sandalwood in the far reaches of Blue Lotus than in the TRNP scent widely feted as the sandal king, i.e., Embers, a scent whose rich labdanum absolute tends to drown out the quieter, shyer voice of the sandalwood. At the moment where the ylang cedes territory to the sandalwood, flickers of mint and camphor spark. I love Blue Lotus, and think it is slightly underrated in the TRNP catalogue.

An Amber Fragrance of a Different Kind
Blue Lotus is a very complex amber-like scent that is completely different from anything one might imagine under this fragrance category. But actually, it is much more than that.

Teone Reinthal, who offers her beautiful creations made from 100% natural ingredients under the same name, is based in Australia and sells her fragrances through her website. She is an artist and lecturer and discovered the art of perfumery through aromatherapy during a difficult time in her life.
Today, among other roles as an aromatherapist, it is very important for her to separate her perfumes from aromatherapy and to see them for what they truly are: complex, artistic creations that can compete with all the great, classic perfume houses.
Surprisingly, there is not much to be found on the www about Teone, and her level of recognition does not seem to be widespread, as is the case with many indie brands.
I personally became aware of this brand through Eva and her pretty bottles from Teone. French vintage crystal bottles with wonderfully cute ribbons. Check them out, absolutely delightful :))

When I then learned that these were natural perfumes (I have developed a great love for natural perfumes) and the scents sounded very interesting, my interest turned into a buying impulse. A blind buying impulse. The most intriguing to me were Blue Lotus and Quintessence.
I emailed Teone, and after our nice communication, I ordered Blue Lotus, solely for the reason that Blue Lotus was offered as a perfume oil in addition to EdP, while Quintessence was only available as EdP. Since Teone could only ship the oil version internationally, the decision was practically made.
After I placed the order late Saturday night, I received an email from Teone the next morning, saying she was mixing a mini bottle of Quintessence as a perfume oil to send along with my order. Wow! Now that’s what I call customer love!
Overall, the communication and the entire handling were simply wonderful and lightning-fast!
I can really only recommend it.
I have had similar experiences with other small, mostly one-man brands, and that is one of the reasons for the attraction to them. These people put so much love and passion into their work that it truly touches you.

So, now for those who just wanted to know what Blue Lotus smells like.

I had no clue how blue lotus smells. In my mind, the only association was lotus-Asia-floral-fresh. The description of the fragrance on Teone's website actually focused on a special ylang that Teone had come across and was so excited about that she wanted to compose a fragrance from it right away. Again, I had the idea of receiving a lush, floral, but extraordinary scent that I couldn’t fully imagine, yet it sparked tension and curiosity.
In my further communication with Teone, she referred to Blue Lotus as an amber fragrance. And I was baffled! Amber and I do not get along at all. Amber is for me a sticky, gooey, one-dimensional, and heavy mass as a perfume that does not resonate with me. 99% of all amber fragrances smell the same to me. I feel the same about sacred, monothematic incense fragrances. They all smell the same to me. Equally bad.
And at that moment, I almost regretted my order.

Then I googled blue lotus and learned that this Egyptian lotus has an amber-like scent. Aha.
Now I awaited the delivery and could not have been more surprised when I finally dabbed it on.
I thought, oh, an attar as it should be. Warm and filled with positive energy. It immediately reminded me of Ghoroob from Arabian Oud in terms of composition and that exuberant, sunny energy.
The opening has a slightly green-fresh, spicy quality. A full load of flowers comes into play immediately, and the amber aspect resonates in the background from the start. Over time, the amber aspect becomes stronger and displaces the freshness. It gets warmer and more exotic. A woody note joins in, and at this point, the scent is so complex that it is hard to distinguish anything individually.
And it is not an ordinary amber fragrance, but something that, while going in that direction, is very pleasant and lively and, in its own way, exotic, sunny, life-affirming but never becomes too heavy.

The longevity is, as is fitting for a natural perfume, poor. From the third hour onward, the scent retreats significantly and only smells woody, but never dry. And after 5-6 hours, it’s game over.

In general, I find Teone's fragrances very energetic, positive energy! Each of the scents I have tested radiates a liveliness, almost cheerfulness. I have never experienced that before, and it excites me greatly.

Conclusion: When I grow up, I want to become a natural perfumer too.

Very helpful Review 9
is this the "blue flower of Romanticism"?
Once, I actually saw it: the Blue Lotus!
In a corner of the large water basin, where the impressive "Victoria Regia" resides in the namesake house of our Botanical Garden, a blue water lily blossom floated, no, better: hovered: none of those familiar round lily pads were visible: Only this one blue blossom, which looked as if it were artificial, as if some joker had placed it there.
(Maybe it was?)
If our Botanical Garden were not part of the Free University of Berlin and thus scientifically supervised, I surely would not have seen a sign that read: "Blue Lotus"!
Just a single blue blossom with a yellow face - nothing more!
Was it the longed-for "blue flower of Romanticism," which has been sought for centuries?

Whether it can still be found there today, I do not know; years of construction work kept the house closed, and since then, I have not returned to Dahlem.
But the memory of that blue blossom - a water lily blossom, like out of a picture book - which stands on the water's surface, has remained with me since then and naturally also appears as I tested "Blue Lotus" by Teone Reinthal Natural Perfume.

"Blue Lotus" thus hovers almost unreal in soft powdery, floral-sweet wafts on the surface of the scent.
Of course, at Teone Reinthal, it is not a water surface inviting to float, but a finely composed mixture of already warm-spicy cardamom and vanilla offerings, which, with the addition of one or two delicate fragrance notes, becomes wonderfully rounded and smooth, so flattering to the senses.
For here, sandalwood in the form of Amyris Balmifera is added, whose balsamic spicy richness embraces the already existing sensually warm vanilla.
Ylang Ylang brings a floral-bright glow into this powdery-soft cuddle factor, which I find very welcome.
For as the scent develops, "Blue Lotus" comes a bit too close for me; its powderiness weighs on me and clearly reminds me why I am usually quite cautious with iris: I feel overwhelmed!

Instead of being able to enjoy the liberating floating on the water's surface, "Blue Lotus" wraps me in skillfully knotted bonds of balm and powder, which only dissolve after a relatively long time.
I am honest: I could only escape this beautiful, yet imprisoning scent when I was doing the dishes in the kitchen and splashing around in the water.

Thus, "Blue Lotus," although cleverly woven from wonderful scent tones, is really not for me.
This does not diminish its beauty (or the rating); even if I would like to leave it at our few encounters.
Those who enjoy powdery, very enveloping scents will find in "Blue Lotus" an extraordinary companion that brings all the prerequisites from Teone Reinthal's natural fragrance world.

I, however, will have to continue searching for "the blue flower of Romanticism."
Will I be the one to find it?

Super fluffy and musky, with an edge of floral vanilla. Yes, it's similar to Musk Khabib, but softer, less animalic, and a tad spicier.
