More niche is not possible
This perfume is everything I was prepared for by trying niche fragrances.
You start with freshies, slowly move to fougère/orientals, linger for a while with the French (Lutens/Guerlain, even Roja, often chypre/amber), then spend several years with the good artists that most laypeople can still understand and wear (Nasomatto, Zoologist, Tauer) and that most still find "beautiful."
After that, I entered a phase where I needed something in my collection that could "do more."
Birch tar/burnt wood was exactly the note I was searching for in perfection on the next level of "what do you smell like again" - the ultimate compliment when you want to smell "different."
Bois d'Ascese tries it but fails because it doesn't dare and fades quietly. Tauer's attar is too soft. A City on Fire is very close, but the sweetness in the background annoys me. Just like by the fireplace. These are attempts to deliver "burnt" while still smelling "good."
No Perfume is exactly what I'm looking for. Art. (t-rex by Zoologist closely follows)
Tar without any roundness, really smells like burnt wood. Aggressive, leathery, dark, heavy, and at first glance, hard to wear. Lasts for WEEKS and survives multiple washes on clothes.
For true connoisseurs, an absolute revelation. In public, such a strong statement that you certainly have to deal with people even complaining.
I love this scent and am still in the process of building a friend circle where I can wear this as my signature.
Or I will continue to enjoy sitting near the window and occasionally receiving a compliment from a smoke lover.
