The White Dragon
This one is something special...
Let's start with its story. This fragrance was crafted over more than 3 years. The perfumer began combining its ingredients when he first learned the craft and added to it gradually as more materials became available to him.
Among its ingredients two materials stand out as particularly interesting. The first is Kyara tincture, a rare variety of wild kinam from Vietnam considered by many to be the pinnacle of rare oud. It's essentially never distilled into oud oil or used in perfumery due to its extreme rarity. White dragon is one of only a handful of perfumes to ever contain it.
The second is an astonishing 40+ year old Himalayan musk/sandalwood/oud oil. This musk, along with a 45 year old Mysore sandalwood tincture, add antique ingredients to its mystique.
Aged ingredients in perfumery are prized for their rarity and the smoothness the aroma develops over time. I suspect the aromatic compounds that last for decades in storage also have remarkable tenacity as the strength and longevity of these ingredients is also often exceptional (Antiquity by Areej le Dore is a good example of this).
Beyond that the perfume itself has aged beautifully. Even the more recently added ingredients have been bottled together for 3-5 years now and it's only improved more with time.
Now on to the scent itself:
White dragon opens with the most beautiful sparkling white floral. It's pristine like clean linen and absolutely radiates. Even in the opening it's apparent that the scent will take time to unfold and understand.
Below these florals there are nuances of berries, rose, incense, and earthy patchouli. Above all else though, the heart and base are KINAM through and through. If you've ever smelled kinam wood chips White Dragon captures its essence perfectly. The scent is not sharp or minty, but has the fresh green aspect of snapped branches with an almost vanillic honeyed sweetness.
The fragrance contains a whopping 2.5 grams of oud per bottle, with 1.8g being various kinam varieties, including both cultivated green/white kinam, wild Borneo kinam resin, and wild "true kinam" (Kyara). The ouds are masterfully blended with no one aspect overpowering the composition.
As things settle the kinamic notes never quite fade. Even 12+ hours later the oud can still be detected. In this stage however the musk and sandalwood are most apparent. The scent is intimate, warm, and inviting.
White Dragon is clean, comforting, and spiritual. In trying to decide the best occasion to wear it, I find it suits a church service better than a dinner date. This is one I hope lasts a lifetime.
