Raw vanilla meets cucumber
As a big fan of Dior Hypnotic Poison — and an even bigger fan of Kenzo Amour, which has been my signature scent for the spring and summer months since 2010 — I was genuinely looking forward to trying this flanker. After reading all the reviews about Kenzo meeting Dior in a bottle of Hypnotic Vanilla Cloud, I confidently ordered it online. When it arrived, I practically tore the box to pieces to get to it.
You can imagine my surprise when my nose picked up little to no resemblance to either Kenzo Amour or Dior HP.
First of all, Hypnotic Poison has a completely different vibe to Kenzo Amour, at least to me. Yes, they share some similar vanilla-and-powder base notes, but the opening, the airiness, and the overall character are worlds apart.
The original Zara Hypnotic Vanilla definitely reminds me of Dior Hypnotic Poison. The Hypnotic Vanilla Elixir is a darker, smokier take on the original. All three are elegant, sweet, dark, slightly heavy, feminine and sexy. The Cloud flanker, however, is the opposite — casual, fresh, airy, almost sporty, a touch spicy, low on sweetness, and leaning more masculine than feminine. The best way I can describe it: a raw vanilla pod meets fresh cucumber.
It’s pleasant and energising, suitable for all seasons and occasions, reasonably priced, inoffensive… and very, well, mediocre.
The sillage is weak and the longevity is poor — I could barely smell anything after a couple of hours. A faint dusting of sugar and nutmeg on skin were the only notes that lingered.
All the elements that make me love the original are either missing or muted in the Cloud version.
