Prise For A Supreme Love
Have you ever thought about the meaning of supreme? Highest in rank or authority, sovereign, chief, of the highest quality, very great or greatest in rank, character, importance, and so forth: supreme courage. Up to the extreme, “make the supreme sacrifice” means to die for what you believe in. ZARA concocted four unique perfumes of the Chapter No. 7 series dedicated to vanilla, and this one was baptized Supreme. What makes this fragrance worthy of this adjective? Supreme Vanilla has wonderfully balanced oriental notes of tonka, iris, vanilla and sugar from the distinct woody base of this sublime perfume. But the thing that makes this fragrance special is the note of dirty, bitterish, and markedly burnt ink. India or Indian ink, also Chinese ink, is a simple black or coloured ink once widely used for writing and printing and is now more commonly used for drawing and outlining, especially when inking comic books and comic strips. They also used it in medical applications, and it has such a bitterish and rubbery smell. I remember when I was in school in the 70s, Pelikan was a leading brand in the production of stationery, pens, and inks. And this perfume, with this edgy note, brought me back to school.

The similarity with Bohemian Oud is evident, especially in the initial phase. If you spray them in the shop at the same time you will realize this similarity. And this is why I purchased it and immediately returned it when it was released on the market. Yet, there is so much more, the smell I associate with sugary popcorn, thick incense and burnt vanilla. My first impression changed a lot, to the point that, after trying it several times, I finally gave in to temptation and bought it again. Supreme Vanilla and Bohemian Oud are two parallel universes that need to be explored thoroughly without dwelling too much on the surface. In the passage to the middle phase and then to the dry-down, the similarity between the two fades until it disappears. The initial similarity I felt at first sight gradually turns into dissimilarity. To my surprise, the more Supreme Vanilla dries, the thicker, creamier, liqueur-like, and woodier it becomes, with that special touch of burnt cotton candy. One has a leaning towards oud, while the other is towards vanilla. The names Bohemian Vanilla and Supreme Oud would have fit perfectly.

Supreme Vanilla is anything but linear, and reveals with a bang of loose cannons boozy, so much so that it resembles a vanilla liqueur; if you know Rum Don Papa, you know what I’m referring to. The vanilla is perceived very intensely in the first minutes, then it moves to the background, and it almost seems to vanish. But behind this liqueur accord lies a spicy layer, which I recognise as that of cardamom. Extremely polarizing, it is a puzzling start and might be off-putting for some conformist people.

Approaching the central phase, the dark notes of ink intertwined with the burnt notes of sugar pulsate in the heart. The spicy aspects of vanilla slowly emerge again, or rather Madagascar vanilla. But vanilla isn’t the only note jostling to be noticed. The scent now takes on dry woody facets, which I associate with cedar wood chips. The smoky, or rather scorched, toasted nuances float undisturbed in the background. If you don’t like the pungent smell of ink, it might be a challenge because this note is very noticeable and dominant in this formulation. If you like it, you must have Supreme Vanilla as it gives it a unique edge!

A final transformation occurs in the dry-down, in which the warm notes of tonka are accentuated and mixed with those of the vanilla protagonist, dry woods, and the semi-sweet and burnt notes of sugar. The trail that the perfume leaves is intense and captivating. I find it very amber and not very gourmand. The ink somewhat went away in the dry down and left a linear tonka and a bit of brown sugar. When the initial exposure subsides, the perfume reveals burnt nuances. Imagine placing some black vanilla pods in the oven and lightly toasting them. In the meantime, let’s light a small cone of non-clerical incense. The result that permeates the room is a smell of slightly toasted and smoky vanilla, with incensed overtones. This is exactly the aroma that my skin releases after some time of spraying Supreme Vanilla on it. The good thing, at least for my taste, is that this smells anything like syrupy gourmand vanilla cookies and syrupy brown sugar, but burnt sugar. So, I get plain vanilla, but I don’t get too much sweetness, which is a plus for me.

Although the resemblance to Bohemian Oud is obvious, I don’t think it is a re-edition of the same perfume. Supreme Vanilla is part of the Chapter No. 7 collection, while Bohemian Oud belongs to Chapter No. 3. Even if Zara often offers perfumes already released in the past by changing the name and packaging, here I would find it senseless. The day after, you can still smell a smoky and incensed vanilla on the surface, with just a hint of sugary sweetness. This is a perfect evening and nighttime, rainy, cosy fall and winter perfume. Dress it up, dress it down, even for the office if it’s climate-controlled. It has unexpectedly great longevity but a moderate projection, which makes it ideal also for daily wear. I like this one, it’s very smooth, very well-rounded, very versatile and genderless, in my opinion. Highly polarising, I believe the smokiness and inkiness is what elevates this essence, and sets it apart from other popular vanilla things.

I'm writing my impression after several tests on a bottle I've owned since October 2023.

Niche Dark Academia Perfection
Imagine being in the most beautiful old (maybe a little bit dusty?) library reading a book that smells of paper and ink, the place is full of wooden tables and bookcases and you have fresh vanilla biscuits with you, but you also want to seduce the hot person next to you. This is how this perfume smells. Zara perfumes are generally good, especially for their prices but this one is by far my favorite.

It is a warm dry woody sweet vanilla perfume at its core, everything else is to add more character and OMG they do that. The second most prominent note is by far the ink on me. In a lot of reviews, I saw people describe the smell as "wet ashtray" and even though I understand where this is coming from and it's not exactly inaccurate, I LOVE IT. I don't know how to explain it, but the smell is almost comforting, even though it has a musty/smokey quality the ink smells exactly like an ink pad my grandfather had and along with the tonka beans gives a kick that I find so good. It is a mysterious, sophisticated, SEXY AS HELL, and dark vanilla and I love an interesting vanilla. The cedarwood and the sugar are supporting roles here, I cannot identify that is cedar I smell but with time, along with the powdery vanilla, there is an aromatic woodiness that lingers on my skin and the sugar adds sweetness all around.

This is a juggernaut as far as longevity goes and even more, as sillage goes. This thing smells A LOT, and for days on my clothes, but it isn't clogging at all. To explain how impressed I am with it, I was wearing it in a bar I go to quite often and the place is very small, more often than not extremely crowded, and people can smoke inside, and I still got questions on what perfume I wear because those around me could smell it, something that is not a thing in that place.

Something that I also didn't expect (bc the reviews I had read were a mixed bag) is how much of a people's pleaser it is, especially men. Every time I wear it I get questions on what I wear, bc they like it yes, but also bc they want to get it, so at least the people around me find it as unisex as they come, something that I also agree with. I can see everyone wearing it and even all day, just not as much in summer. I purchased it in early March, and I just stopped wearing it as much now, in warm weather it can become slightly overwhelming.

Supreme cardboard
This is my least favorite of the Zara vanilla collection from last year. Maybe even my least favorite Zara scent ever! The other vanillas are all fine, but this leaves me puzzled.

It just smells so musty and papery.
Sorry to say so, but the opening reminds me of moldy cardboard that was stored in a humid basement for years. I'm not exaggerating, unfortunately! I had this problem with some other fragrances like 7 Virtues Vanilla Woods or Caldo Gourmand, too. But there are also vanillas in this style that don't do this to me at all (Spiritueuse Double Vanille, Vanilla 28 and so on). And this unassuming Zara fragrance might be the worst offender.
I thought it might be a problem with my skin, so I tried this on a blotter, too, and it smells just as much like wet paper on actual wet paper.

On my skin, it at least smells better after a couple hours. It turns into a warm, sweet, milky, pleasant vanilla with a slight smokey accent and a hint of sugared florals. Nice enough, good even, but no reason to suffer through the tragic opening.
I can't smell the ink note at all, maybe that gets buried in the mustiness of the opening.

Others seem to like this, I might just be an outlier here. Still, I obviously wouldn't recommend it, especially not as a blind buy.

The best of the new Zara Vanilla line
Some of these reviews are a bit much (LOL), but I always tell myself that fragrance is subjective. What one nose smells, another nose will interpret differently. That being said, I don’t get the “ashtray” “cigarette” vibe that a lot of people mention here… maybe the ink is coming off “smoky” to some but I can assure you that doesn’t last long when you actually wear the fragrance from start to finish.

Supreme Vanilla starts off with a very sweet vanilla, contrasted with a taunting and bitter ink note. When I first smelled it, I was pleasantly shocked but also scared that the ink was going to “ruin” the fragrance like most have said. But if you actually wear the fragrance and wait for it to dry down, you’ll see that the ink doesn’t stay around for long. After about 20 minutes, the ink moves far into the background and what’s left is a beautiful, sweet, dark vanilla scent with a touch of cedar. The sugar and tonka bean keep the scent sweet throughout its wear.

This is one of Zara’s better performing fragrances, lasting at least 7+ hours on my skin with moderate projection. Supreme Vanilla is personal favorite from the new line of vanillas and it’s quite sexy if you ask me. It doesn’t really remind me of Vanilla 28 because the ink in here is quite distinctive. The ink + vanilla combo really sets it apart from the whole line and from other deep/woody vanillas on the market. Excellent job, Zara. Give it a sniff if you can!

Inky Vanilla
What would've been a perfectly normal vanilla scent made weirder because somebody spilled ink on it. On the surface it is pretty much a typical warm sweet vanillic scent but the ink cuts through it, it's cold and smokey and a bit metallic and sharp overtime the sharpness dull now it blends in with the sweet and vanillic side of this perfume and to my nose it turns ever so slightly chocolate-y and cocoa like.
You could layer it on top of a sweet, creamy, body cream or lotion to push out the sweetness further and have a gourmand with an edge or layer something smokey and woody on top of it and it turns into a full witchy type of scent

The likeness to Bohemian Oud is apparent, still, there's so much more, the smell of sugary popcorn, thick incense, and smoky vanilla.

I've tried most of the vanilla flavors in this series and was not impressed with any of them. They all have the same texture.

Lovely, cool vanilla (thanks to the ink note?). I think this is unisex as it isn't aggressively sweet or floral.

A rich, comforting blend of warm vanilla and soft floral notes. Sweet but not overpowering, it’s an inviting fragrance.

Dark vanilla with a hint of cigarette. Once it dries down it’s a woody dry vanilla sugar. Kinda has a toasted marshmallow effect.

To me it’s similar to Black Tie (which I also own). For both I wasn’t impressed at first and then it just grew on me.

If you’re looking for a vanilla to layer with more complex fragrances in need of sweetening, that’s the one. By itself it’s flat.

It has a lot of vanilla and smoky nuances. I think this is due to the ink note, as it is the only difference in its olfactory pyramid. Good!
