The Fairytale Of Hansel And Gretel
And now, three days had passed since Hansel and Gretel had left their father's house. They began walking again but only went deeper and deeper into the forest, and if help didn't come soon, they were bound to die of hunger. When midday came, they saw a lovely snow-white bird sitting on a bough and singing so beautifully that they stopped to listen. When it had finished, it spread its wings and flew ahead of them, and they followed it until they came to a little house, where it perched on the roof. When they came pretty close, they saw that the house was made of bread and the roof was made of cake; as for the windows, they were made of pure sugar. "Let's fall to," said Hansel, "and say grace for such a meal. I'll eat a bit from the roof, and Gretel, you can eat some windows that'll taste sweet." Hansel reached up and broke off a little of the roof to eat, to feel what it tasted like, and Gretel stood by the window panes and nibbled at them. The gingerbread house is synonymous with Hansel and Gretel, one of the most famous fairy tales collected by the Brothers Grimm. And who wouldn't be tempted by such a sight?! Even more so when you're starving, like children! — Hansel and Gretel (1812) by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm.
When I first caught a whiff of Vibrant Leather Wood, I first thought of a gingerbread house. It's not a burst of spices, talcum powders, woods, or anything. There is a large amount of melted black sugar, to be exact, neither burnt nor toasted. Resembling a glaze, this thick molasses becomes a sugary and syrupy consistency once it touches a liquid, becoming extremely sweet and almost sickeningly excessive. In case you missed it, black sugar is not brown sugar. The former is sugarcane juice boiled for an hour until it turns into a black syrup; the latter, instead, is refined white sugar with some molasses added later. Sweet and tangy pepper is the accord that oozes from the sugar blast. A pepper that never ticks my nose but gracefully melts with citrus peels. The opening seems a fougère, modern, revisited, not reminiscent of other classic fougère pillars. A touch of lavender is unmissable, not taking over, with the shades of both ear and stalk.
The more Vibrant Leather Wood grows, the more it takes a honeyed slant. For a few minutes, I get the fruity and sugary taste of the fruit drops, that of hard candies like Woogie fine drops. The white lily offers us all its intense, vivid, penetrating scent. Have you ever had a bunch of lilies in your hands? If kept indoors, their aroma fills the rooms. The spicy notes of pepper intertwine with the floral notes of lily and iris through a sweetish undertone, giving life to a tangy and talc-like trail. It is an intense fragrance, and its scents envelop me for hours, even after the first application. I feel followed by sugary clouds. I look around and see nothing except him on my skin, sensual, warm, deep. Another honored guest that helps support the sweetness is the orange blossom, with its slightly indolic and slightly dewy nuances. When smelled from a close distance, the dewy and soft nuances of the rose become more perceptible.
On the final, the scent becomes warm, with a base of tonka bean, vanilla, and mild wood accords, evoking a deep masculinity. That does not mean a woman should not wear it. Even though it includes many sweet notes, the result is not gourmand. If you are looking for a perfume that evokes the notes of a pastry shop, with creams and pralines, then you are looking for something else. Other sweet and dark notes are added to the potion in the dry-down, slightly earthy and dirty, like patchouli leaves. A balsamic, almost menthol, and camphoraceous aroma rises and mixes with the black sugar grains.
After testing it several times and on separate occasions, I can say that this flanker is very different from the original Vibrant Leather (2018) Eau de Parfum and Vibrant Wood, where the iris was overdone. With Mood and Wood, Jerome Epinette has revisited and distorted his flagship product, giving life to two unique perfumes for the autumn season, with the more spicy and smoky Mood and the more fougère and amber Wood. Based on the first results, I can say that the perfume has a slightly lower performance than the other flankers. Maybe it has to mature a little before it shines. But this is irrelevant; the perfume is ideal for formal, elegant meetings, day and night. It releases a sense of refinement, sophistication, and class. Ultimately, this is a fairytale, the Hansel and Gretel fairytale. If I could confer with perfumer Jerome Epinette, I would compliment him on his outstanding work with the latest ZARA collections.
I expressed my opinion based on a bottle I have owned since October 2024 (BC 42321, PD 2024-08- 19)
