Absolutely gorgeous floral Chypre

Created to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of The Royal Opera House Muscat in 2022

I have been wearing Turandot now for many days just to find the words how to describe it. Chypre is what Dove does definitely best and Chypre Floral Turandot is definitely no exception.

Turandot is a passionate perfume full of emotions and very rich in flowers and some fruits. It opens up with uplifting aldehydes and citrus which is barely detectable and straight away you will be surrounded by a huge cloud of flowers (Rose de Mai and Magnolia being dominant in the middle, Iris on the base) and somewhat delicious touch of Blackcurrant and Peach. None of the notes are straight out on a tray, but have been shredded into a million pieces and blended towards perfection. This puzzle, where is the picture of the intact tray with flowers and fruits, is completely impossible to put together ever again. It’s like a beautiful compact powder which has dropped on the floor.

Turandot is an evocative, mellow and dense blend, it’s delightfully brash compared to any other floral blend of Roja. It’s very sumptuous. Even if there is Princess Flower as a one note and Turandot was the imperious Princess in China based on a vivid fantasy I would say that Lakmé would be a scent of a princess and Turandot would be a scent of a queen. This fragrance is unashamed and bold, not shy and snooty. The base of Turandot is warm and woody and there is slightly earthy and mossy undertones with a depth from Labdanum.

The presentation of Turandot is phenomenal like is the presentation of the previous perfume - amazing and delicate Lakmé - made for The Royal Opera House Muscat in Oman in 2019.

SO THIS IS LOVE?

This is a very hard composition to describe so I’ll try my best. Turandot is like a painting of two stage of love. It starts off very bright, exciting and vibrant and then transforms into something opposite - calming and indulgent - like thunder strikes filling the sky, spectacular and captivating… and settles down to a sleeping sea.

The scent announces its presence with a theatrical entrée with an unusual green tea-like aroma with fresh and zesty citruses with a sunny day-like Aldehydes. There’s also some sweetly gluey, herbal and tea-like floral note that is quite noticeable, which is Immortelle.

As the brightness settles a bit, the orchestra of bouquets of flowers bloom up and concours the whole composition. The conductor of this orchestra is a powdery, almondy and delicate sweet spicy floral sensation composed by Paulownia flower and Heliotrope. In the first round sits gloriously voluptuous Rose de Mai along with tropical fruity facets of Ylang and Peach. A bit of sourness from Black Currant whispering like a dreamy string instrument.

The composition changes quite remarkably as the base rises up. The prominent powdery facets remain but the quality of it changes giving off a warm and almost skin like feel. The buttery Orris merges the core making it more earthy with a clean “purple” undertone. Orris Sur Cedre steps forward and took the lead. Under this powdery woodsy combination lay fresh soily, earthy and mossy base. The ambery warmth radiates from sweet Benzoin with an intimate feel of Labdanum. There’s a little touch of tannin of Coffee but it’s very soft and in the back seat of the orchestra.

Turandot is somehow familiar. It has similarities with his other creations but just by the parts here and there. The powderiness reminds me of RDHP15. On the other hand the peachy and warming Ambrée sensation takes me to Britannia. The floral Chypre base makes me think of Chypre Extraordinaire. What really makes Turandot stand out as its own direction is a prominent note of Orris Sur Cedre.

Powdery opulence with class

A fragrance inspired by the opera of the same name. As with most of Roja Dove's fragrances, I find it difficult to interpret it precisely, as the scent notes are so immensely interwoven. I'll try my best.

Overall, the fragrance smells very powdery and soft. Secondarily, I would say floral and fruity, but the powdery notes clearly dominate here. That in itself goes well with the opera.

What stands out is the pleasant aldehyde in the top note, which introduces the fragrance very discreetly and gives it a direction. Despite the citrusy notes that are listed, they are not clearly noticeable at any time. Rather, they are like a kind of decoration that only refreshes the fragrance a little.

As the fragrance progresses, it becomes increasingly floral, but retains its powdery pattern until the end. The flowers are also not as intense as if you were sniffing a real May rose, for example. This partly "engaging" aspect is not present here.

I think Roja had to make a compromise with this fragrance. By that I mean, in order to keep this DNA so beautifully soft, some materials that were used to improve durability and sillage (e.g. Iso E, Ethylene Brassylate) were omitted here. Just a guess on my part.

The H/S is not really outstanding for an extrait in this price range. And I think that simply increasing the fragrance oil content would not have the desired effect here. After all, an extrait has no limits.

All in all, an excellent creation from Roja Dove, which I would also like to welcome into my collection one day.
