Onda Eau de Parfum
Monsters frighten us for the way they tell us about ourselves. Don't doubt it, Onda is a monster. Vero Kern plucks specific and unexpected descriptors from each of her component pieces. Vetiver (salt lick), passionfruit (floral rot), ginger (sand-paper), honey (musky sharpness),woods (dust). Using these disparate pieces Kern composes a perfectly poised perfume that I could never have dreamed of. It's not simply coherent, implying that the the odd bits have been smoothed over. It's right, as if it reveals something important that I hadn't considered. It should look like Frankenstein's monster; torso from one body, head from another, limbs from a few others. We should notice the ill-fit and coarse seems. It should be awkward if not uncomfortable. But it is in fact perfect.
So, with my biases hanging out and my eyes a little glazed, Onda.

I turn to the artist not to reassure me of what I already know or believe, but for the unexpected. Wearing Onda gives me a detachment from normalcy that I could just kiss. It's hallucinatory. It's the scent of an angel, who, on getting up after a hard fall, adjusts his powdered wig and his jockstrap with delicately gloved hands before digging through the soil to harvest pickled citrus fruit. Fantasy and synesthesia in a bottle.

Abstraction is a tool for reducing components to the properties that the artist find most important. Kern recognizes properties that another artist might not. For all the outrageousness of this composition, it feels comfortable, like the way that a vivid dream can have a bizarre narrative while feeling perfectly normal. While Onda brings to mind a trippy angel it also also simply smells like skin and motion. There's an expression that pops into my head unsummoned when I wear Onda. "The sins of the flesh." This expression, like Kern's perfume, ties together desire, fear, exposure and release into one experience. To pay Kern a high complement, her perfume is gorgeously, magnificently queer. Kern shows the difference between prettiness and beauty and prettiness starts to seem beside the point.

Maybe Lighter, But No Less Challenging and Great...
Onda Edp opens with a very brief and somewhat subtle bergamot and citron tandem before quickly moving to its early heart. Upon reaching the early heart the early citrus quickly dies, replaced by a powerful animalic and floral-like passion fruit and slightly sweet honey tandem that dominates, supported by clay-like coriander spice. During the late dry-down the composition turns even more animalic as a strong leather and musk-laced vetiver begins to dominate, as the passion fruit and relatively dry honey slip into a supporting role. Projection is excellent and longevity outstanding at 15+ hours on skin.

Onda EdP is touted by many as easier to wear than the original extrait. That said, I think while it is indeed different smelling early-on it is no less aggressive and challenging, just in a different way. The EdP composition substitutes passion fruit and honey used early-on in a very innovative way featuring the combination's more animalic and floral facets, and at times it even could almost be mistaken for dulled dark rose. That combination may be a lighter way of transitioning to the leathery musk-laced vetiver driven base of the original extrait but it is no less challenging and interesting, just different. The real question is which challenging aspects of Onda you prefer since lighter or darker transitions, neither composition compromises and can be equally polarizing... and fascinating. The bottom line is Onda Edp at $200 per 50ml bottle is far from inexpensive and is not going to appeal to the "crowd pleaser" crowd in all likelihood, but Vero Kern's outstanding skill coupled by the use of top-notch ingredients make this composition every bit as good as the extrait but different enough to justify owning both, earning an "excellent" to "near-masterpiece" rating of 4 to 4.5 stars out of 5 and a very strong recommendation.

A Corpse Throws a Party
After a few months in the damp earth, with only a few worms for company, she got bored.
She couldn't stop thinking about how, before her fatal mishap, she used to spend nights out on the dance floor with her friends, under flickering lights, in smoky clubs.

So she took action; thankfully, the coffin had already rotted, and she began to dig her way up.
When she finally made it, dawn was breaking - just enough time to get ready.

Staggering, she made her way home. The few passersby she encountered along the way mistook her for a drunken homeless woman and crossed the street as soon as they spotted her from afar.

Upon arriving at her former home, she found that the spare key was still where she had last hidden it. She didn't waste a thought on new residents or changed locks, and she was lucky - her family hadn't yet brought themselves to change anything in the apartment.

Everything was quite dusty, and several spiders had made themselves at home, but she didn't mind. She welcomed the company.
She was a bit startled by her reflection, but a hot shower, plenty of makeup, and a great perfume would take care of that.

So she took a long shower with plenty of shower gel. Along with the dirt and the worms, a few parts of herself also went down the drain, which she noted with more amazement than fright.

She let herself air dry - better safe than sorry - carefully combed the remaining strands of hair, and after she had dared to face the mirror again, she applied makeup in layers.
The rotting rags she had worn since her death went in the trash, and she picked out the high-necked but sexy clothes she used to love wearing.
One more shower with her favorite perfume, a sweet-spicy, heavy scent, and she was ready to go out.

Stumbling and swaying, she made her way to her regular club.
It was winter and so cold that not even the most persistent smokers were outside.
The bouncer was either drunk, high, blind, or all of the above; in any case, he actually let her in and mumbled a wish for her to have fun.
In the darkness of the club, no one noticed her at first; there were plenty of other strange figures around.

Slowly, however, a stench began to spread that even the most oblivious started wrinkling their noses at and began looking for the source of the foul smell.
After several complaints from the guests, the lights were turned on to identify the culprit.

Everyone looked in the direction from which the terrible odor was coming, and there she stood - the makeup crumbling on her decaying skin, the clothing seemingly the only thing holding her form together, her hair reduced to tufts, and smelling so sweetly of death that it took one's breath away.

Screaming and cursing, everyone fled the club in seconds, and just as hastily, I ran to the bathroom earlier - to wash up and to be near the toilet in case I ended up losing my lunch after all.

Nothing works anymore
I will attempt the feat of setting aside Profumo's commentary and expressing my own impression of this extraordinary fragrance in words.

What strikes me first is an incredible warmth. Not the kind we usually describe as warm with oriental or woody notes, nor the scent of sunny meadows, but rather a crackling atmosphere in twilight. I was in a very elegant casino 35 years ago. At one table, high stakes were being played, and the tension among the few spectators was almost greater than that of the players themselves. The room, with its sparse lighting that only illuminated the tables, rich velvet curtains, and elegantly dressed people, conveyed the mood that this fragrance gives me. Completely outside of the usual, almost silent but with an enormous presence.

To put it more simply, the amber note is quickly overlaid by the spices, but not covered. Basil and coriander are used in such a finely dosed manner that they are hardly recognizable. This unusual spice note works as a whole, telling a story, surely a different one for everyone. The ginger brings a certain sharpness, demanding attention, while vetiver and leather prevent the fragrance from becoming too heavy, allowing it to fade away comparatively slowly and calmly. But that takes hours.

Onda is an extraordinary fragrance. A scent that I would like to perceive every now and then, but for me, it is not a wearable perfume. It is like a novel that I can dream into, but do not want to (experience) live.

Still a magic lamp, only the spirit is slimmer...
No, Vero Kern did not take the easy route and simply diluted her three wonderful perfumes to create an Eau de Parfum. On the contrary: she revised the formulas, strengthening the top notes and slimming down the base. In her own words: “... because an Eau de Parfum requires a different structure with more emphasis on the top notes and less on the base.”

She reduced the proportion of animal essences in the base in favor of a multifaceted passion fruit note, which brightens and lightens the fragrances deep into the heart. When I first read that she wanted to transform her scents into Eau de Parfum variants using this fruity note, I initially thought: oh dear, what a shame. I imagined a typical, tropical-sweet affair like passion fruit juice, which - for me completely unimaginable - was to invade my beloved Onda. But, I was mistaken! This note is fantastic. It integrates beautifully and actually harmonizes with the strong vetiver and leather notes, with the sharpness of ginger and the spiciness of coriander, as well as nutmeg. The opening is now brighter, more radiant, and the fresh, citrus notes present in the perfume resonate more freely, not instantly captured by the darker, heavier notes of the base. Rather, they now unfold an unexpected life of their own, accompanied and strengthened by the surprisingly dry and not sweet-smelling passion fruit. It is even so dry that it gives the fragrance, especially at the beginning, a certain roughness, almost a chalky quality. Gradually, however, this roughness gives way to the warmth of the base, and the scent develops further towards the familiar Onda. And indeed, the base reveals the full Onda sound, only quieter, as if Ms. Kern had just turned down the volume a bit.

It may be that the fragrance has indeed become more wearable in this concentration, as what escapes from the Extrait bottle is a rather overwhelming force - as Vero Kern herself admits. As an Eau de Parfum, however, Onda is tamer, more restrained, and certainly less disturbing. Nevertheless, it is miles away from all mainstream and other trends. Like an icon of long-gone days, it reaches into our time - or as if Pola Negri and Rudolph Valentino were strolling arm in arm through our streets today.

With now 10% perfume oil content, the Eau de Parfum is not quite as rich in ingredients as the Extrait, but it is still extremely long-lasting and has a balanced projection. When applied sparingly - you can now spray it on! - it is strong and substantial enough to accompany you all day long. The bottle is as beautiful as that of the Extrait and, like this one, is nestled in a purple felt pouch, which in turn comes in a piece of cardboard poster tube. A lovely design with a touch of understatement and a lot of style!

In the meantime, she no longer does everything herself, having found a small perfume manufactory in Italy that she trusts and now produces her fragrances, and she has also handed over distribution to others. She says: “Now I’m starting to create again. That was also the idea, to relieve myself of all these additional areas. I’m not that. I’m someone who gets bored quickly; I need to create. That keeps me alive, it gives energy. This work nourishes me a lot, the creating and designing.”

One can be curious!

Interesting mix of fruit, honey and ginger- but not fresh and juicy, it has a dried raisin like quality.

Raw power, honey-glossy, patchouli-drunk. A brilliant, animalistic scent. Not for the faint-hearted.

After the disturbing impressions of dense honey, fruits & citrus, the scent settles in the base, becoming "powdery," spicy-elegant.

Honey and musk create a natural candle wax scent here. Sweet, thick, but not really exciting. Thank you, Snoopyelfi.
