Somewhere between the Tantive IV and the Comet
I am a child of the 70s, grew up with Skylab, Space Shuttle, and Soyuz, and because my father took us to Texas and Alabama for two years due to his job, the US Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville was almost my second nursery. I still vividly remember all the huge exhibits, many of which were actually in space and some were just mock-ups for astronaut training. I can still recall the very specific smell in the museum with the space capsules, with their hydraulic lines and all the ceramic tiles and metal parts that once glowed during re-entry. A metallic, sometimes quite biting smell, mixed with cleaning agents that keep the floors sparkling clean in the American way.
The bottle is softly nestled in a black-gold, quite large box, impressive and dignified. Very solid soft glass with a gradient from clear to silver-white to black, topped with an equally solid white-gold cap. Clear golden lettering on it, and the whole thing has a face, a very valuable one at that. I like it.
Somehow, though, I don't feel as welcomed by the scent itself. It starts off quite sweet, fruity-sweet, tropical, and a little sour, although the acidity quickly fades away. The fruit accord has a synthetic undertone, but fortunately, it never fully drifts into the Punica fruit oasis or Hubba Bubba tropical direction. At some point, some gentle flowers also join in, but the artificial sweetness remains subtly present, then increasingly dissipates indifferently and rather unspecifically towards the end.
You get about 6-8 hours of this "astronaut," although in the last 2-3 hours it’s more of a sweet haze than a real scent experience. A fragrance that is probably more suited for a younger audience who enjoys this artificial sweetness. Politically completely incorrect, I would rather recommend this scent to women, but all the other 71 social genders should feel at home here as well; I don't want to find any pronouns at this point.
Now, to tie it all together, this scent has nothing in common with my memories of that NASA museum and all its exhibits. As a Star Wars fan, I can more easily imagine this scent in the Tantive IV with its clinically white corridors and cabins, ... before the battle begins and the spaceship is attacked, captured, and boarded by Darth Vader. Although I can't really imagine this scent on Princess Leia. But that's a completely different topic.
Maybe Ulf Merbold smells like "astronaut," although I can't quite picture that either. Or Captain Future? Yes, so far that fits best into his cosmos. I may have to adjust my opinion on this at some point, if only this topic weren't so exhaustively boring with a stuffy nose.
