American Pharaoh was certainly a case...a polarizing creation that really did very well for Folkwinds, being the best seller and the most iconic of the house, considering the cold welcome received by the perfumery community.
In fact, I understand the criticism; modern American perfumery, more than others, has this peculiarity to use exceptional quality ingredients with a tremendous lack of technique, and that's clearly recognizable in the poor structure that the perfume seems to have..well, in this specific case I should say "to had". The second chapter actually has something more to say, bringing a severe quantity of precious materials: lot of deer musk and muskrat, a good value in ambergris, not counting the true protagonist that is the fabulous Bright Virginia tobacco, the one descending from the plantations in Pensylvania , very aromatic and sweet.
Are you familiar with the smell of natural tobacco leaf? Cigar or pipe smoker, maybe? Then that's the kind of independent creation you are looking for...fantastic tobacco scent, raw, manly and western.
It's also musky, very musky with this chili opening and a full evolution.
You want a warm, chocolatey, leathery tobacco scent? Go for a cohiban coffee or whatever, but if you want the plain stuff, I mean the natural and fragrant Aroma of pure tobacco you must go with this one.

Intoxicated by the prairie
Life is sometimes lonely out here. The red sun trickles into the night like dead cherries in front of the entrance to the tent, staggers day-drunk like port wine over the steppes, flows down from the rocks like pyramids, flickers like ghosts in the smoke over distant fires that wilt cool as roses on the horizon. They soon whisper sweet animalistic trails that still creep warmly across the ground over thin layers of cocoa dust. There are salt edges of long-dried lakes, endless weaves of cedar fibers that smolder softly like peat into the distance, where Virginia tobacco leaves wither, the spicy-archaic, raw, rotten, still soaked with fermented fruit, intoxicated by the smell of the prairie **
Founded in 2022 by Jono Bornstein, the Folkwinds label mainly uses natural raw materials from America to capture the scented landscapes of North America. He seems to be getting better and better at this. While the first version of "American Pharaoh" seemed less mature and unrounded despite the high-quality materials, I find the second version far more delicate and balanced.
The cherry wine runs like a red thread through the fragrance from beginning to end, subtly sweet and boozy like a slightly less sweet port wine, slightly smoky with spicy Virginia tobacco leaf in the background at the beginning. The damask rose initially emphasizes the acidity of the wine before the various types of musk (abel musk, deer musk, musk musk) become sweetly animalic, warm and tart underneath, adding depth. The sweetness of the musky notes is emphasized by a hint of chocolate and vanilla. With increasing duration, the Virginia tobacco becomes clearer, raw, spicy and hay-like dry, it is initially still combined with the slightly salty but clearly tobacco-like ambergris before this is replaced by the woody-warm Virginia cedar notes, creating a slightly peaty-smoky impression with the remaining notes. Gradually, the cherry wine note becomes more present again, as if releasing the tobacco leaf at the end. The intoxication of the Prairie is rather moderate but persistent.
