My Confirmation
This year marks 30 years since I was able to celebrate my confirmation.

It was a huge celebration back then, and we were very fortunate to be able to rent the community hall attached to the church for the event, to accommodate and feed my then quite extensive family.

The actual confirmation started at 2:00 PM in the church, and the day before was filled with preparing the hall and making the final arrangements. It was a Saturday, which worked out well because I could avoid the further preparations in the morning; I got to go to the hairdresser.

My then-best friend, along with many classmates and neighborhood youths, were confirmed together with me, and my friend and I had a simultaneous appointment at the hairdresser. When I look at the group photo in front of the church today, it seems we were ALL at the same hairdresser ;-)

It was, of course, a very exciting day. Once I got home, I could hardly do anything but think about when I could finally change and put on makeup and when we would actually leave. My parents were already completely exhausted but still had to get ready for church, and my brother - a year younger - acted rather disinterested and bored, but of course, he was also ready on time, and then, yes then it was time to go, and my mother asked if I had my hymn book ready.

Of course, it was right here in the hallway, just needed to grab it and go. No, wait, I still needed the lace handkerchief that she had specially picked out and ironed for this occasion. A handkerchief? Yes, the bouquet of lilies of the valley would go right on top of it… oh, I see?!

In front of the church stood two ladies. Each lady had a large basket full of small bouquets of lilies of the valley in hand and distributed the bouquets to us confirmands for the photo. How wonderfully fragrant it was!

Carefully, I placed the little bouquet in the old lace handkerchief on top of the hymn book and waited patiently. Those who had a bouquet lined up for the photographer, photos were taken, and a group photo was also made, and then we solemnly entered the church, and the whole time I had this wonderful scent in my nose. I can only describe it like this: delightful, with a slightly bitter undertone, which can also be found in H. Lehmann's fragrance. Simple and straightforward, as it should be, just lilies of the valley.
Today, in hindsight, I can also interpret the term "handkerchief perfume." One of my grandmothers always carried handkerchiefs scented with lilies of the valley, but that's just a side note.

I hadn’t consciously perceived this scent at all since then, yes, I simply forgot what lilies of the valley smell like; it was only the many small samples from my dear Serafina that reminded me of it, and so I ordered the H. Lehmann lily of the valley fragrance and do not regret it. I actually wanted the scent for layering, but now, after it has evoked this beautiful memory, I would like to use it like this from time to time (which ultimately doesn’t have to stop me from layering ;-))).

And so, once again, a fragrance has evoked a beautiful memory….

Simply Lily of the Valley!
Where the word "Simply" does not mean simple. Simply Lily of the Valley is my description for: Simply unexpectedly beautiful.
I received the fragrance as an Easter gift from my eldest daughter, who lives in Berlin and whom I sent to the Harry Lehmann perfumery, inspired by suggestions from parfumo members, as she was also looking for a beautiful lily of the valley scent.
Now I have this wonderful lily of the valley fragrance, as I was more than skeptical after seeing the very plain homepage and the even plainer flyer about the "Smallest Perfume Factory in the World" (as they call themselves). The smallest perfume factory has been producing fragrances independently since 1926, now in its 3rd generation. My daughter said I would like the shop. It looks like a large, old pharmacy, a bit dark, very nostalgic with huge bottles and canisters from which homemade fragrances are filled. I have to go there when I am in Berlin again.
But to the scent. Eureka! This is the most intense, authentic, and purest lily of the valley perfume that has come under my nose in the last 45 years. Lily of the valley scents are never derived from lily of the valley flowers, but only synthetically, even in the most expensive niche fragrances. The flowers are too delicate and do not survive the enfleurage.
The sillage is breathtaking and the longevity is - for a soliflore - magnificent! My youngest daughter wants to have it now too.
We absolutely have to go there, as the Lehmanns have some unknown and unexplored fragrances on offer: e.g. acacia, linden blossom, tulip, etc.
Well, sometimes true treasures lurk behind simple appearances!

I don't think I like lily of the valley scent. This little bell hits me hard with rough glue. It's probably me, not the fragrance.

Naturalistic, herbal-green organic lily of the valley from the meadow. Polished: St. Tropez from the same house. Frau Spee prefers this one.

Anyone who knows how lily of the valley smells knows how this scent smells: a bit melancholic, enchanting, green, and yet sweet. A beautiful fragrance!

Intense lily of the valley. Less green than the Penhaligon's and according to family tester M, "more authentic."

Fell headfirst into a field of lily of the valley, floral and slightly bitter.
I’ll stay here, it gets greener and a bit sweeter. Simply beautiful!

Very authentic, slightly green, subtly soapy-creamy lily of the valley. Similar to Muguet and Lily of the Valley. For a fraction of the price.
