Maybe I'll buy you again...
Long before I was born, my grandma had a new partner after my grandpa passed away. Hermann is one of the best people I've ever met, no problem on that he has no advice, no situation he has not under control, a friendly smile is always on his face, the next joke, often a crude saying on the lips, the Marlboro always between the fingers...

For me, Hermann was always "Dadden". Why, nobody knows. Somehow I christened him that from the very first words. Dadden always had slightly scratchy cheeks, smelled like his Marlboros, Yves Rocher aftershave, maybe some hair lotion, and in the evening, his after-work beer. Maybe he smelled like the scratchy lavender of Tabac Man when you met in town, when birthdays were coming up or when you went out to eat? Maybe. I couldn't have answered it that way. But I know that Dadden is grandpa to me, at least as much grandpa as a biological one can be.

From Grandpa to Grandpa Scents. These fascinated me from the start and in my youthful ignorance Tabac Man moved in with me when I was 16-17 (the "real" Tabac followed later). The desired effect failed to materialize, I didn't smell like the seasoned man I wanted to be back then, I just had a cloud of that scratchy lavender around me. Made up masculinity from the bottle, like a too sharp shower gel, nothing real that connects with you. Disappointment, the bottle was emptied and went out of my life.

Dadden went too, he died in 2009, fall down stairs, overnight, the last "take care, regards to grandma" was an unconscious goodbye. A real one was not granted to us anymore, he did not wake up in this world. 12 years ago now, memories fade, his voice fades from thought.
Two weeks ago I reached for the last of a Tabac Man deodorant, wanting to finally use it up, it had been sitting for far too long. Sprayed it on, yes there it is again, the scratchy lavender, pungent shower gel, a good decision to finally empty it!
But when I came back from the bathroom to the dressing room, by the cloud had settled a bit now, there was something else. A fleeting moment, a quick passing that left just a hint of scent. But enough to recognize you.

Now I know, yes, you had Tabac Man! Sparingly sprayed on when you met in town, birthdays were coming up or you went out to eat. Not much, just a whiff in passing, fleeting and impossible to hold on to. But there.

That was our goodbye. It took him 12 years but now you were there briefly.

And my goodbye to Tabac Man? Maybe I'll buy you again... As long as you're here for a little while

Underestimated, right? / Youngtimer!
Yesterday I was at Müller again. And yes, at the moment I don't have much time to write reviews and collect fragrances, on the one hand I have a slight space problem and on the other hand the samples are currently enough for me to test and consume.

I would also like to devote more time to other collecting passions, so as some people know, beautiful wristwatches as well as comics/books and in today's case beautiful model cars (childish? Maybe, but I don't care... I stand by it) and yes, then I had the Formula 1 Ferrari in my hand and thought: "Oh come on... such an impulse buy for my fragrance collection would be something again - ah right Tabac man I wanted to get into the collection... 8,95 € and bang".

And I have to say that the bottle fits nicely in the hand, has a fine design and weighs quite a bit - you won't find many in this price range, and I'm always happy to support Tabac and Mäurer & Wirtz in particular.

A sweet-herbaceous opening is a delight, with a seductive smoky backdrop, but very gentle.
Dark tart moss sprouts up slightly tart, but very discreetly tart - a light pinch, so to speak.
Gently spicy, masculine and woody.

Small or random layering tip:
Harmonizes wonderfully with the Leather Perfume Oil by Malin + Goetz, which I had applied.

Ultimately, this 24-year-old youngtimer comes highly recommended! Aside from that killer price, it unfortunately pales between the classic and the hip new Montale flacon tabac scents like Wild Ride, for example, both the older and younger crowd might well tune this one out.

I'm trying really hard to write reviews, but it feels like I'm not getting anywhere at the moment.
Many thanks for reading!

Undervalued...
I've known the scent for quite some time. I have occasionally risked a sniff in passing. I have never bought it.

Until I took it with me after all.

Sprayed it on and was immediately overwhelmed. This spiciness and freshness. Woodiness also comes through well. A tart, masculine composition. A slight sweetness wafts somewhere in the background.

The performance is perfectly fine. I can smell it all day long. Even if it becomes skin-deep after about two or three hours. This is noticeable in the sillage.

A really interesting little water. Unique in its form. Could also be at home in the niche sector, for more than ten times the price of €13 for the bottle.
Just take it with you, it basically costs nothing.

I think it's great.

Ugly drake, or: Johnny Depp's Vadder
Scandinavians love interior design and decoration stores. What they also love are store concepts that guide potential shoppers through the store in a predetermined labyrinthine path to ensure that the entire range is examined before they leave the establishment. Clever, clever ... if you combined both aspects, you could certainly make a lot of money. You've heard it here first, folks!

Be that as it may, I am quite grateful to the latter business strategy of the friendly northerners, as without them I would probably never have gotten my hands on the fragrance I have today.
As part of my recent trip through beautiful Denmark, one of the places I visited was a national drugstore chain with a rather strange identity design. As a self-confessed marketing victim of the worst kind, this of course appeals to me directly and I entered, actually looking for all kinds of licorice products, because there's an almost endless selection of them in the far north (licorice toothpaste - say what?!).
As I made my way through the sales labyrinth, I naturally came across the men's fragrance shelf, which was admittedly quite clearly laid out. Interestingly, this was located between potato chips, dried meat, razor blades, foot creams and moist toilet paper - a kind of bundled mercantile presentation of primeval male needs. In terms of fragrances, there were only all the La Rive clones, the entire "Brut" skincare range, a few Van Gils brand fragrances (it's a thing in Denmark!), a few scattered Hugo Boss classics and, in addition to the classic "Tabac Original", the "Tabac Man", which I had never heard of before. Despite all the stereotypical progressivism of my chosen vacation region, this olfactory line-up gave me official vintage, or at least retro vibes.

As I was already familiar with most of the fragrances available, I reached for Tabac Man and liberally spritzed the back of my hand.
Over the course of the next few hours, I strolled through my vacation day as if inspired, fascinated by this unexpected olfactory melange of patchouli-infused fougère, reminiscent of highly esteemed coumarin spirits such as "Ungaro pour Homme III", contrasted with shallow, possibly "shower gel-like" elements, as can be found prominently in Johnny Depp's house and yard diesel.
I was also able to detect a small homage to Davidoff's great "Zino" (for your information: THE ultimate masterpiece of timeless men's fragrance art - you're welcome! That's usually enough to trigger enthusiasm in my simple mind.
Euphoric, I consulted our trusted fragrance database on my smartphone, reproachfully searching for answers to the question of how this - attention, fragrance polemic! - Kipper cheapie over seven years and 1332 tested fragrances had managed to elude my nose. I am anything but averse to appropriately categorized fragrances.

Released in 2000, aha ...
Similar to the after-shave lotion of the same name, actually, mhm, ...
Spicy-woody-fresh, yes, that's right ...
Rose geranium, definitely, mhm, yes ...
Rating 6.9 - WHAT?!?!?!!
In these times of inflationary fragrance ratings, that's the equivalent of a school grade 5 - or 6 or even 7!
I was completely exhausted. What a rollercoaster of emotions - had I just found an ugly little fragrance by chance? De gustibus non est disputandum - yes, yes, I know that (as well as the fact that Denmark is not geographically part of Scandinavia - eeesh, know-it-all comment prevented!)
6.however, 9 seemed to me to be quite a small number given the large number of trustworthy vintage and retro aficionados on the platform. Because the Tabac Man is certainly both vintage and retro. And it's not really a duckling - it's more of a drake, but in my opinion it hits the (rough!) mark of a really nice men's fragrance pretty well. Quasi what Johnny Depp has been trying to portray visually on posters for Dior for years - that's the olfactory essence of Tabac Man! Only a generation earlier ... and much less durable ... and in a less beautiful bottle ... and without tattoos!
Please do not misunderstand: Tabac Man doesn't smell anything like Sauvage - which I love just as much. In my opinion, however, it serves the same quite unmistakable category of fragrance.

So at the end of the day, I returned to the progressive vintageretro sales temple, one bottle richer and the equivalent of nine euros poorer. A really good deal, if you ask me.
For those of you whose interest I have managed to arouse, please head straight to your nearest drugstore tomorrow and try your luck.
Tomorrow, important, because today is Sunday and the local drugstores are closed.
With the progressive northerners, however, you could have gone today.

Thank you for reading - and please note my wink, as with all my texts ;-)

Modern-old-fashioned, intense-transient
A very nice fragrance. Smells very clean, yet spicy and distinctive tart.
It has a certain old-fashioned style in its DNA, but has no problem blending in with the modern. The original Tabac is not really my thing. This one, on the other hand, seems more contemporary and rounded to me - more suitable for the masses.
Nevertheless, one smells him very rarely and I have recently made an experience that makes me think the name "Tabac" simply precedes him and prevents that he is ever taken in the hand and smelled.
"What about this one?" a man with a wide grin across his face asked his female companion. "Ew, Tabac. get lost with it."
Granted, the lady was of younger vintage and the original Tabac may not be hers at all. Even me, who develops a penchant for older, classic fragrances, he seems a little strict.
But the Tabac Men is just different. A barbershop fragrance, as he could still come out today.
Habs me then verkniffen them Oberlehrerhaft to instruct that this Tabac, which is in the black bottle, just NOT like the original and would definitely be worth a try.
"Who does not want, has already." I thought to myself and rummaged further in the lower shelf segment (where I then came across the Hitfire from La Rive. But more about that elsewhere).

Unfortunately, the fragrance lasts only very short with me. Already after an hour I smell him only skin close and after 3-4 hours the magic is over.
He is but just right if you want to feel / smell fresh and clean for a few hours after shaving or showering in the morning.

I had him with me on a summer vacation. In the bright midday sun, he is too heavy. Makes yes but nix, because morning put on he is at noon eh already evaporated. In the evening, paired with the salty scent of the sea and a good glass of wine, he is but also a feel-good fragrance.
My female companion he has not elicited leaps of joy, but for good he was found. So he is, the Tabac Man ... no big fuss, no big ripper. Subtle and good. A fragrance that one (s) for itself and not for Haschen after compliments carries.
