Bois Marketing
First day of the year and I’ve already faced the biggest disappointment of 2025 (while fearing an even bigger one with the upcoming Dior Homme Parfum 2025…).

A Dior saleswoman gave me a sample (the perfume is set to launch in a week), and after four sprays on my hand, I detected a scent profile typically found in Lattafa fragrances, indeed (nothing against Lattafa I even like some of their offering).
It opened with a slightly smoky note (incense?) that accompanied a generic vanilla with an almost caramelized touch.
The perfume is extremely linear, from the opening to the dry-down, which perhaps only differs by the timid appearance of woody notes.

• Projection: Despite the four sprays, the projection is rather weak: 4/10.

• Longevity: 2/10. The perfume calms down very quickly and becomes a skin scent after about 2 hours, barely perceptible afterward.

• Scent profile: 5/10. Very uninspired & unisex, as noted in the “This perfume reminds me of” section—this is very close to three Lattafa perfumes without being an outright clone. There’s nothing innovative here. It’s a pleasant profile but less pronounced than the Lattafa fragrances (special mention to Wood Intense, which, with its woody and licorice notes, offers a very niche profile), 24 Gold or even By the Fireplace.
In the ultra far dry down (4h mark and my hands washed twice) I feel a hint of white patchouly.
It's not a bad scent per se, but in the Dior's context (history and scent profiles proposed in the past) it's a terrible let down...
• Value for money: 1/10. Completely uninteresting, especially as the bottle sizes have been reduced from 125ml to 100ml and from 250ml to 200ml (so bottle: 3/10). Even if Dior may use potentially high-quality materials, compared to the aforementioned perfumes, there’s no reason to linger on Bois Talisman (profile/price/longevity/creativity).

Overall rating: 2/10

Francis Kurkdjian’s tenure at Dior doesn’t seem poised to leave any lasting legacy. I don’t hold him solely responsible for these critical failures since he clearly appears to fulfill the requests from the commercial teams. However, it’s very disheartening to see him release no inspired creations, especially within a collection with such a history.
Is he being forced to create perfumes, or is he content with being Dior’s “master perfumer,” taking on purely commercial projects?
Compared to Demachy’s era, Kurkdjian’s tenure feels like a shipwreck that risks clinging to his reputation. Where Demachy had the authority to reject certain orders (like the baby perfume) and protect more “niche” perfumes (the “parfum” versions of mainstream fragrances as well as the "discontinued" privé which where still available in Paris' stores until Kurkdjian's arrival...), it seems that Dior is no longer interested in having critically acclaimed successes or perfumes that showcase its legacy as a once-great perfume house.

Haters will hate, lovers will love
I *finally* got to sample this one in store the other day, and I’ll be honest, the ratings for this aren’t shocking. I know many are disappointed with it, but I can see that many people also enjoy it for what it is. I veer more towards the people that enjoy it, as I for one, enjoy a good smoky / spicy vanilla.

With its very simple composition, BT covers a lot of ground. It has a sweet / spicy duality, but holds a smoky heart, reminiscent of burning wood. The sugar actually packs a big punch, giving the scent its saccharine center. Based on the reviews, I was really nervous to test it (because I feel like everyone HATES it!), but as usual, I actually quite like it. This is exactly why I go and test scents for myself. And reading through some of these reviews, I think some people just like to hate on change.

Is the scent profile new? Probably not for many who have been in the game for a while, but for someone new to scents, this could be very new to them (especially with the large smoky accord). Is this scent way overpriced? I would agree and say yes, it is overpriced. But it’s Christian Dior at the end of the day. You are paying for the name and the quality. Now I can’t speak to the longevity and projection, but the scent is really nice for the simple composition in which FK made it. I don’t understand why people are upset at that.

I’m gonna finish off by saying that I truly believe that the hate for many of these new Dior releases are fueled by people’s disdain for the perfumer, Francis Kurkdjian. I can’t fathom as to why people believe that he’s trying to “ruin Dior”, as if he isn’t one of the most well known and accomplished perfumers of our decade. Companies wouldn’t be trying to dupe his famous (or infamous depending on who you ask) BR540 to this day if he didn’t know what he was doing. Can perfumers get it wrong sometimes? Of course! But I don’t think the hate is really justified with this one. The same way people loved to hate on Dioriviera (also shared my thoughts on this) is the same way people are trying undermine Bois Talisman.

Hate all you want, FK is going to continue in his craft and if you can’t find beauty in his work, well then it simply wasn’t made for you.

Scratchy burnt sugar
A disappointing effort from a perfumer who created the stunning Eau Noire for the same house – a thin burnt sugar-over-firewood effort that is briefly attractive before quickly unravelling into a mess of scratchy woody-ambery aromachemicals.  The scent of Bois Talisman is what hangs over the Dior Privée concession nowadays, by the way, tainting the air with its bro juice grossness.  Though I’m sure it’s not aiming for it, Bois Talisman lands in the same general area as By The Fireplace and if that’s your thing, fine, but not sure you want to be paying Dior Privée prices for it.

Licorice shavings for advanced users
Still sad that I wasn't going to get the Dior jukebox for Christmas (2024/2025), I took the opportunity to head for a Dior counter where I hadn't yet asked for it. Before the most handsome man in Manchester (not Becks!) could attend to me, I took a look at the displays and discovered this fragrance that I had not yet discovered. The standard flacon from the Dior Exclusive line is of good quality, but - as an old flacon addict - it doesn't appeal to me. The contents have a beautiful, dark wood color, and I hoped that it wouldn't smell as woody as it looks. I was lucky, even doubly so: no "me and my wood", but soft, beautiful, gourmand. Shades of Fumerie Turque, which I adore, but also babycat associations. Wonderful! Sweet, smoky, oldschool-oriental, un-oud, (I even find vintage-lagerfeld sandal) wood.
As expected: long-lasting and wearable. Breath paralysis or tooth decay not to be feared.
Hit!

A new love!
When I read the fragrance notes of the Dior Bois Talisman, I knew that I really wanted to test it So I went to Breuninger on Saturday in the hope that they already had this fragrance. And what do my eyes see?
There it is! Sprayed it straight away and I was hooked! It's been a long time since I've been as enthusiastic about a fragrance as Bois Talisman! So warm, so cozy, exactly my comfort zone!
I always know immediately whether I like a fragrance or not and here the only question was which size! Unfortunately, they don't stock the small 50ml sizes at the counter. But as I didn't necessarily want to buy the 100ml for the time being (I was actually considering it), I ordered it directly online. My package has already arrived and I'm so excited about this little treasure!
The nice lady at the counter also gave me a sample, so I had it at home for a few days before the fragrance arrived.
For me, it's a lovely warm fragrance that envelops you and I can't stop smelling it on myself. I only ever wear fragrances for myself, which is why I love exactly this type of fragrance and the exclusive lines of the houses. Because they don't usually come across as beast fashion.
I feel more comfortable with the fragrance than I have felt with a fragrance for a long time. It has a slight sweetness from the sugar, but it's not chewing gum sweet! Simply the perfect balance!

I have found a new love!

To be honest, I can't imagine it being much different than a $25 Arabian cologne.

Are you kidding me? 265/400 Euros for a super sweet generic amber woods mess? Kurkdjian really wants to destroy this brand!

Most of the low ratings are unfair and from user who sniffed it off a card- this is a long lasting, high quality ceder/vanilla fragrance.

This one is shockingly good. Very sugary at first, but immediately mellows out into a sweet and dark vanilla fragrance with some spice.

Sweet-woody dupe of By the Fireplace with less smoke and no real twist. Solid, but overpriced and unoriginal.

Addictive sugary vanilla on a smooky woody base. Very close to By the Fireplace .
