Balmain's Carbone revisited
A more dry, darker, woodier, kind of more austere version of Balmain's Carbone. Basically take out the subtle fruity-milky feel from Carbone, here you have Graphite. If you aren't familiar with Carbone, then well: "pencil sharpener", and that's it. Shavings, sawdust, wood chips, freshly-cut wood trunks. Nearly nothing else except for a warm ambery frame, and a gentle violet note, which is greenish, discreetly sweet and really subtle. Probably fairly pointless to own both Carbone and Graphite (as I do...), but Graphite is perfectly good as well: more than an inferior "copycat" it smells like a slightly different perspective on the same theme, worth having if you're really into this type of perfumes, or just have the chance to get both for pennies. In other words the quality and the "features" (projection, persistence, elegance, versatileness etc.) are quite the same in my opinion - except for the persistence, which is actually much better here. Solid, easy-going versatile stuff.

Montana / Graphite
Nice smell ... for me associated with ink, drawing room, graphite spread on paper. In addition, you can feel wood, incense, pepper, delicate sweetness, some Gucci PH fragrance and a delicate, but very delicate violet (which I do not like by default, and it fits here). Fragrance unique and created by a wonderful, one of my favorite creators - Mrs. Lorson.
It becomes a little dull over time, but stays on the skin slightly and for a very long time. In general, it is very variable. The projection is also above average and that is a big plus.
A similar scent is later created by Ms. Lorson for Olifactive Studio- Autoportrait (equally captivating), but unfortunately secondary and veeery similar to Graphite (a bit bad, but I understand that money does not fall from the sky, so if niche companies offer money, why not although too similar to Graphite). A huge additional plus for Graphite is that it was not only built earlier and the price is 3 times lower than Autoportrait.
If anyone hesitates - Graphite or Autoportrait - I would recommend Graphite without hesitation for 2 reasons - the price and lasts longer - up to 8 hours (tested hand in hand).

A Special Dressing
Montana has made a good name for itself - in previous decades. The masculine scents found their audience. But how does the brand present itself today?

Montana's Graphite can claim a prize - for one of the quirkiest mainstream fragrances. At a pleasantly civil price of around €50, you get a herbal scent that feels pleasantly slender. Instead of broad oriental opulence, the base presents itself as an aromatic accord of whatever. With the synthetic fragrance materials in this price range, I find it hard to assign them vivid names. Let's call it musk; that always seems to fit somehow.

Graphite, in the sense of a tarry, coal-like note, does not greet us here. In the top note, the fragrance appears slender, somewhat mineral, and perhaps even metallic. Gradually, the feeling creeps in that I know this scent. It is the fresh herbaceousness that suddenly triggers an association with cucumber salad, and finally the realization - it is dill!

Quite bold to place a kitchen herb right at the center of the action. However, let us consider that most people do not want to perceive a perfume that closely. So, when the wearer passes by fleetingly, a feeling of sympathy and familiarity is likely conveyed. It may be that Graphite works in this sense; still, I personally do not want to smell like dill.

Carbon with Dill
Montana's "Graphite" is listed as a similarly scented fragrance to Balmain's "Carbone de Balmain," which in turn is noted as similar to Amouage's "Memoir Man." While I can only affirm the latter comparison with various caveats, the relationship between Graphite and Carbone seems much closer.

In fact, both Carbone and Graphite spring from the fragrance pen of Nathalie Lorson. Carbone was released in 2010, making it a year older than the 2011-launched Graphite. Also in 2011, Ms. Lorson referenced herself a second time, delivering in Olfactive Studios' "Autoportrait" a homage that plays out its innovations against the original Balmain only in facets. With so much recycling of ideas, I am surprised that they didn't even bother to give "Graphite" a different name.

Taking this lineage into account, the present review of Graphite is written with reference to the older and more prominent brother Carbone. As a reminder: Carbone is a dust-dry, slightly smoky-spicy wood scent that primarily conveys warmth and understatement.

Graphite starts immediately with the Carbone-typical pencil note. This note can also be found in Lalique's "White"; there it is served with lemon peel, which, while thematically taking a completely different direction, still comes across as equally appealing. However, Graphite bursts in through the door: the opening pencil accord is here more present, metallic, sparkling, artificial. Above all: short-lived.

Overall, this appearance feels somewhat superficial to me: the top note clamors for attention with much noise before the composition subsequently sheepishly hands itself over to showiness. For after the initial bang, the scent is quickly dominated by dill. Respect to apicius for his description - this quirky scent note is something that needs to be characterized. Besides the dill, I also perceive a subtle scent of herb salt, so that Graphite's heart indeed conjures an image of cucumber salad in my mind.

After about an hour, the dill becomes tamer, and as the scent slowly trots towards the base, I can absolutely confirm the closeness to Carbone here. In moments when the dill is muted, Carbone and Graphite are strikingly similar. It is the above-mentioned Carbone-typical smoky-spicy, woody, cozy dryness that has also been instilled in Montana.

As a regular Carbone wearer, I am grateful for this new facet that Ms. Lorson presents here in the form of Graphite. However, I find the dill at the beginning to be overemphasized. Overall, I find the original closer because, on one hand, it is more coherent, and on the other, I remain skeptical whether the experiment that Graphite undertakes actually works. Ultimately, the scent largely comes across to me as a green-influenced variation of Carbone. If it weren't for the immediate reflex to want to turn the clock forward an hour right after spraying to let the dill calm down to a bearable level. This also contributes to the fact that Graphite does not convey an impression of understatement for me, but rather could be vaguely compared to a start-up that, while relying on a proven formula for success at its core, simultaneously claims to significantly expand the familiar through partly untested, impetuous innovations and ultimately perhaps even deny it to some extent. In the end, however, it is often only the tried-and-true core that remains. And so I appreciate Graphite primarily for its closeness to Carbone.

Also in terms of longevity, Balmain has the edge: Graphite departs from me after about 5-6 hours. In terms of sillage, both roughly balance each other out: neither is an extroverted loudmouth.

In short: Carbone is significantly better, less quirky, and still miles away from the mainstream.

Summer Barn
The scent starts off green. To me, it smells like hay and a barn in summer. A bed in the cornfield comes to mind.
It has something familiar, like back in the days when the fields were harvested. A bit like the hay of my childhood rabbits.
It also reminds me a little of Fahrenheit - not a hero of my childhood. Surely it’s the violet leaf combined with the leather.

After 10 minutes, even the geranium is pronounced, but only briefly. Nevertheless, the scent retains its grassy character, also damp grass. The Middle Ages come to mind as well.
The leather is resinous and crackling, black.
The scent is not smoky at all, which one might assume based on the pyramid. The oak moss is also rather mild and green.
It’s a good scent for the day, for work in the office. I believe it fits very well on damp, cold days, rain or during summer rain.
It lasts until the end of the workday, then something new comes along.

If you truly love pencil shavings, you might want to try if you can handle the mentholated ketchup in the opening.

These are drops from Earth. They smell like pencil's carbon, though they shine like diamonds. Unexplored jewel, worth every drop! Love them.

Ok, I get the pencil shavings, but I also got dill pickle chips from the open. Kind of a sour BO off my skin. Love Nathalie's work, but sample first.

Successful mainstream. Subtly sweet, spicy, and powdery, with a hint of violet and a balsamic finish. Definitely unisex, S+H is fine.

Spicy-green, slightly floral dill bomb flies over thin soil and lands through smoke on wood. Pilot in a little leather jacket steps out.

For me, a highly successful flanker of Balmain's Carbone, also by N. Lorson.
The dill opening is brief, then it becomes Carbone.

More like pickles than pencil shavings ... the warm wood notes slowly push through the sour green. You have to be into it.
