Vanilla bedded on pine smoke and rum
Smoky Dark Vanilla reached me from Odessa as a 2 ml sample together with 8 other fragrances from the Ukrainian perfume house Negligé. Thanks to @DasCroe for her blog post about Negligé!
I actually like vanilla, but sometimes it's too overpowering and sticky for me. So I was curious to see how Negligé incorporated vanilla into this fragrance. The fragrance pyramid, although incomplete (the top note is missing), makes exciting reading; according to the homepage, we have the following in the heart note:
Indian vanilla, Madagascar vanilla, cinnamon, pine smoke, petroleum (oho), rum.
In the base note again:
woody notes, green tobacco, tar (ok..), (vintage) leather, ylang ylang, Peruvian sage, rose geranium.
What's missing in the top note, unfortunately, but I actually notice the vanilla right at the beginning along with pine smoke and rum. Unusual for me, but interesting. The pine smoke together with the rum keeps the vanilla sweetness well in check. For vanilla fans, this could be a disappointment, especially as the vanilla recedes further and further into the background as it develops.
As it progresses, I smell woody notes, tobacco and a strong, balsamic sage. It becomes somewhat dry and masculine. Why tar and petroleum appear in the notes here is not clear to me. I don't smell them explicitly, but I think that the perfume works well without them. The fragrance is advertised as unisex and that's how I perceive it. Rather something for the colder days.
Definitely an interesting change from the tried and tested.
