Double Espresso Nose of Gatsby 2024 Eau de Parfum

I’m usually not a big gourmand lover, but I can sure appreciate a well-done coffee note from time to time, as long as it’s not too sweet. In that regard, Double Espresso is a real hit.

The opening might be a little challenging at first: there’s a slightly animalic edge and the initial blast of smokiness and oud can feel intense. But don’t let that scare you off, they settle fairly quickly. Once the coffee note steps forward, the fragrance transforms into something wonderfully cosy, like stepping into a warm coffee shop on an autumn afternoon. If Zoologist’s T-Rex is what you wear on a Saturday night out, then Double Espresso is the perfect scent for Sunday brunch the morning after.

As it develops, Double Espresso becomes softly woody with hints of smoke, chocolate and coffee. A sprinkle of spice from cardamom adds warmth, while a subtle rose in the background smooths everything out and ties it all together.

It’s a bit like a chai or pumpkin spice latte, but exactly how you wish those drinks actually tasted. I think many people (like myself) love the idea of a pumpkin spice latte, but in reality it’s often cloyingly sweet and overly rich. Double Espresso, on the other hand, is gently warming, slightly creamy, lightly spiced and very well balanced by coffee and dark chocolate - all without the sugar overload.

It's a truly cosy and comforting fragrance that proves you don’t need sugary vanilla to capture the essence of autumn.

Sometimes mulches are driven through Seattle, along soft paths of wood chip bark that cover the silver dust in the parks and almost all the rose beds. Then a signal is given. The whole city turns on coffee grinders with large roasted espresso beans that fill the streets with nutty aromas and a few brew hot chocolates. They swirl bitter brews under portafilters like connecting dark matter. This is then drunk warm. Soon the air in the state of Washington cools, yet the scent lingers for a few hours.

Gatsby Yeh from Seattle has been running his small label Nose of Gatsby since 2023. He tries to offer his audience as much fragrance diversity as possible. A good part of his skills he has taught himself, and since masters rarely fall from the sky, he certainly still has potential for development, which can be noticed in some of the scents. One of the quite successful compositions for me is "Double Espresso," which modernly combines nutty-dark Arabica beans initially with mulchy-animalistic, Indian-sounding oud notes that gradually transition into bitter, almost bitter dark cocoa. The cardamom plays only a subtly green, camphor-dusty-silvery role in the top notes, while the roses only appear in the heart as small sour-fruity pinpoints in the cocoa. What starts very clearly and consistently diminishes in projection and density after about an hour, becoming dustier and more transparent, but still remains well perceivable in its cocoa-bitter espresso bean spiciness for some time. A very pleasant, autumnal coffee ceremony for me.
