catching joy by its wrist as it races past
Beautiful foolishness, madcap delight. Coloring book fruit bowls come to life scribbled wild outside every line, Aladdan's cave jeweled jello towers giggling, wibbling, sweet reckless audacity of spinning til dizzy-drunk, dress helicopter-whirling eyeballs pinwheel-wild. Mandarin acid-bright, cartoon citrus. Rhubarb's pink bite. Blackcurrant shadows pooling, brief gravity, wry mordancy. Peachy fuzz osmanthus, vetiver's tannic grip, a self-aware undertow of flat champagne effervescence, Tartness with sass-filtered sweetness, bright bright primary colors, slightly chaotic energy of cars shaped like pickles and animals wearing tiny hats doing important jobs, delightfully absurd, winking impish. Breathless, tumbling; catching joy by its wrist as it races past.

It's a scent that combines the feeling of radical kindness and demented glee and calls to mind why I love the stories of shows like Steven Universe. As a matter of fact, I think the whole cast of Steven Universe smells like this, the way they can be simultaneously deeply caring and completely unhinged with joy. That combination of genuine sweetness with chaotic energy - it's Garnet's cool confidence meets Amethyst's wild abandon meets Steven's pure-hearted enthusiasm. The fragrance has that same quality of being deeply good-natured but never boring, sweet but with enough "edge" to keep it interesting.

I just read John Green's The Anthropocene Reviewed: Essays on a Human-Centered Planet and this is a scent that sort of makes me think of what he wrote here, “You can't see the future coming--not the terrors, for sure, but you also can't see the wonders that are coming, the moments of light-soaked joy that await each of us.”

I highly recommend John Green's book and I also highly recommend Delulu.

it's a Moira Rose
I described it to my friend via text - the cedar/rose/vetiver balances the sweet/citrus/floral with a little bit of weedy stank (in a good way).

In my pastry chef days, in the spring, we'd bring rose geranium in and steep the leaves in milk to make a delicately floral panna cotta or ice cream, and in the discussion of how to describe the flavor to servers, we laughed at "It tastes like licking your grandmother's ear", something I always associate with garden rose fragrances. What was fantastic about presenting it in a dessert form is that the flavor lights up your senses - what is this and why is it so familiar? It reminds me of tasting the rose geranium while surrounded by rhubarb tarts and lemon cookies - as another reviewer said, thankfully without vanilla.

This perfume has that same effect - so many different, refreshing things happening all at once. Sweet but not sticky, fruity but not juicy, fresh cut flowers in an art gallery rather than overpowering potpourri and dust on a windowsill in someone's cluttered home.

I don't typically care for rose notes in fragrance so I don't think this is something I'd reach for often, but it's a nice carefree breezy scent that I'm looking forward to sharing with perfume friends.

Edit 2 months later - this has really changed my view on rose scents! Still not a favorite but this combination is refreshing and delightful.
Rose usually reminds me of a Sesame Street scratch and sniff book from the 70s/80s that put Big Bird's rose garden (Or maybe it was Bert's?) on a page adjacent to Oscar's trash can, so for most of my life, rose has been associated with hot garbage. Excited to get to this turning point in my life!

gummy punch
Sticky-sour candy plastic. Viscid fruit punch, starring a California-sober rhubarb. One of those rare dirty-clean fragrances. It’s a scent that takes a bit of breaking in; the olfactory equivalent of a pair of jelly sandals. I did not enjoy the opening – an acrid citron that hit too Pine Sol for my liking – but once it marinated into tangy, fruity goo I was all heart-eyes. I’m eating a bag of Haribo Twin Snakes as I type this and my fingers smell almost exactly like my pulse points. Longevity does not joke, either. Another addition to the edible gummy family of fragrances (see Gumamina’s Odette, Universal Flowering’s Burst!, and the slightly skunkier, slightly more serious Diptyque Lazulio). A fun time, for sure. But I don’t think I want to Delulu on the daily.

Mental Snapshot: Rummaging through a toy chest of freshly-sanitized unicorns and dinosaurs with Jolly Rancher-tacky fingers. But you’re the daycare owner now. “You smell like weed,” Says Kevin R. “No Kevin R.,” You quickly hush. “I smell like Bulgarian rose and osmanthus.”

tl;dr: candy for grown-ups

didn't review this right the first time so i'm reviewing it again.
can you believe i almost wrote my initial review of this a month ago? crazy- i know. i was such a child back then. i really had no idea how anything was. what i DO know now. is that i love this scent so much. like it is my favorite scent i own hands down. i've chosen to rewrite my review of this entirely to better reflect my experiences with it after a month.

i actually bought a bottle of this and boy was it worth it. every bottle of delulu is a unique upcycled art piece. all the plastic embedded in the bottle was actually collected from various locations around hong kong including thrift stores, beaches, and abandoned buildings. mine has a cross section of a lego embedded in the acrylic cap, a small bit of twisty purple plastic- some kind of large blue chunk of a toy or something maybe?? its so cool to look at. it's so beautiful to me- there's even small chunks of dirt embedded in the lego piece, all the way from hong kong, now in my possession.

the scent is like a strikingly acidic rhubarb jam type smell. the more it dries, the more the jam emerges. it's like if chlorinated pool water was green almost. it smells so unnatural and strange in a way that is pleasingly confusing and familiar at the same time. the jam notes brings some kind of familiarity to it- i think i can smell the incense giving the scent some weight and body but it's not something i'd be able to detect without knowing the notes beforehand. blindly i would say that this scent is rhubarb, blackcurrant, and strawberry jam, though in reality its much more complicated than that.

longevity is pretty good- i can put this on before work and catch it on myself for almost a full eight hour shift. it fades from my skin in around 5 to 6 hours but could seemingly last on clothes indefinitely. i was doing laundry yesterday and smelt it on a shirt i had worn with the scent two days beforehand. i think it has reasonable sillage. you'll get what you spray on yourself out of it, i think you could theoretically fill a room with this if you oversprayed this but it would take a reasonable commitment.

BIG big fan of this scent and what it attempts to accomplish. its such a cohesive piece of work i really enjoy it. the price tag is a little more expensive than i'd like, but you're getting a really cool scent and a unique art piece out of it so i can't truly complain.

Our endless summer memories
Fresh and bright, this perfume perfectly translates ephemeral childhood memories into scent. The rhubarb is tart but refreshing, and its backed by a symphony of citrus. Musky ambroxan comes out in the dry down, but its not overwhelming or in your face. The execution of this perfume is especially impressive, the story, packaging, and perfume itself are so beautifully reminiscent of the seemingly endless summer days of adolescence.

Tart rhubarb opening, with rosy red fruits that dominate the heart. Sweet but never too sweet. Seriously playful.

Oh that strong bitter gritty rhubarb in the opening! What a joy. I knew it wouldn’t last but when it does go it makes me sad to see it go

Juicy and sticky and sweet and round. Sooo juicy! Natural sweetness, not confection. Strong. Unusual. Did I mention juicy?

Tart and vegetal. I don't get any sweetness others mention in the drydown - just less tart and vegetal. Rhubarb's also not nostalgic so it's a miss.

Sour rhubarb stalks in a tart-bitter berry compote on wonderfully clear musk. On sweaty summer days, definitely light-footed ...

At first, a fruit salad that smells incredibly clean. Green vibes from the rhubarb. Not sticky sweet but very mature. So exciting!

Rhubarb/citrus only at first, then the wonderful scent of homemade strawberry jam. Not too sweet at all. Good vibes only.
I really like it!

It puts me in a good mood, cheerfully sweet-sour. The strawberry jam comes through nicely for me, but it could be a bit stronger+longer-lasting.
