motherly muse
Warm, powdery, nurturing. Maternal, in a way that will heal your mommy issues. Makes me nostalgic for a place I’ve never been, somewhere where fresh carpet meets art studio. The clay is true to life and the carrot seed is the best performing I’ve met – a rare treat considering how fleeting my nose finds it in most others. And the rice! (Starch lovers rejoice!). Feels like the sepia-toned version of Dries van Noten’s Neon Garden, which also does a beautiful orris meets carrot. Behaves like a skin scent, but if it were any louder I think that would actually detract from the effect.

I’m really into these “new home” scents – you know, the smell of a model home or a celebrity’s Arch Digest loft. Would put Byredo's Desert Dawn, Fugazzi's Angel Dust, and Phlur's Somebody Wood in the same family, with Naked Dance being the most lived-in and grounded of them all. Also matriarch of the “pencil shavings” niche – think Room 1015's Sonic Flower, Glossier's You, or Universal Flowering's Burst!.

Mental Snapshot: Being taken under the wing of your AP art teacher. She’s teaching you how to use a potter’s wheel for the first time and doesn’t care if you get clay on the suede of her Birkenstocks. Every smudge tells a story and what you call a mistake she calls a discovery. It’s figure drawing class and all bodies are beautiful.

tl;dr: suburban bohemian

A hug from a ceramicist
I’ve put off trying this for so long because I completely misunderstood skin scents at the start of my fragrance journey, and now they’re one of my fav genres of fragrance.

The clay adds this lovely airy, earthy, mineral quality to the fragrance, like a hug from a ceramicist with wet clay all over their hands. It’s like warm skin, intimate but not sensual. The rice is steamy, starchy, inviting. This maybe one of the best fragrances I’ve ever tried, idk.

I'm so sorry...
I hate to yuck anyone's yum, but this is repulsive to me. It smells like an old minivan that has been smoked in for years with the windows rolled up. But in an effort to counteract the stale smell, it's been sprayed with whatever fragrance is on hand, and also has a "fresh linen" scented tree air freshener hanging on the rear view mirror. No, thank you.

Some things you must give time
It's so weird, this. This is one of those scents which I fall in and out of love with, often repeatedly in a cycle. When I first tried this at a boutique I immediately loved it, especially for its present rice note and earthy clay, the softness and comfort of all of the supporting elements. When I tried a small decant of it a month or two later, I detested it because it reminded me of an unpleasant cardboard or some unnamable building material. Now, giving it another chance on my skin, Naked Dance has started showing another face. Some quality of it has grown on me, maybe the clay that I liked and then hated. It's lovely and develops in a great way. Relaxing, addictive, I keep bringing my arm to my nose and inhaling it. It is one of my favorite earthy scents that I consider squarely unisex.

It, to me, also kind of smells like rain.

It recalls rain not in the literal way that Geosmin does (as it is the chemical that is released from soil during a shower and contributes greatly to Petrichor's overall profile), but in a more Impressionistic and watercolor-like manner. Like if you tried painting it from memory rather than en plein air, with the way that memory recall always carries with it some level of unconscious embellishment and impurity that may either distort or add beauty to something you remember. The memory of rain, more than the smell.

All of this to say that this is one of those fragrances which evolves beautifully to me over time. Truth be told, I think many if not all fragrances may behave like this to me and others, evolving over time and showing new faces, but Naked Dance has done this in a uniquely poetic way to me.

Inlove
This is the first fragrance sample I tried that ignited my love of niche perfume. It's so complex and addicting. It starts fresh with bergamot and morphs into a musky clay scent. Then on me it dries down into a light floral. My only complaint with this one is that on warmer days it becomes too strong with florals for me. I would call this scent perfection if the clay accord somehow remained. Still on my fb list, especially because the bottle design is amazing.

A soft skin scent with a rich profile: steamed rice, cracked clay; the neighbors blooming garden on a dry day. Warm, fresh and creamy.

A fragrance for those who want to smell like an antique bisque doll collecting dust on a wooden shelf.

Very interesting, but not my cup of tea. It smells like dried spices kneaded into cold clay. Leans savory gourmand to my nose.

Smells a lot like green tea on my skin. Can also detect a bit of powdery and woody elements to it, along with musk. Moderate performance.

I’m burning through my sample and will probably have this be my next splurge. Spicy, earthy, but still brings out the sweetness in skin.
