Classic spicy cologne
Cologne Nocturne offers a very masculine cologne. Chic and classy in a traditional French way. The levels of aromatics and spice are extremely high and they are offset by solid woods, for a bold and fiery effect. More suitable for summer evenings, definitely not for office settings.

It seems Le Galion is capable of more than just reviving old successes after all. Cologne Nocturne is a great 'new-ish' (2016) release by the house, that fits in perfectly well with the Paul Vacher hommages. Traditional perfumery is very much alive.

The Pulse Slower
Sometimes, very rarely, but sometimes everything just fits.

In a world where the loudest voice prevails, where everything feels bright, shrill, and excessively overdone, I sit and enjoy the quiet moments. They have become rare, but they still exist. The regular use of fragrances is part of this for me. As a conclusion to my cleansing ritual and as a completion of my wardrobe. It brings me great joy to wander among the bottles with my eye and index finger until I find the specimen that matches the weather, mood, and outfit. An even greater joy is when the mere sight of the bottle, the feel of the heavy glass, and the removal of the ideally valuable and neatly fitting cap accompany the ritual.

With Cologne Nocturne from the house of Le Galion, I have found such a comprehensive care package. The heavy bottle with its vertical, concave grooves, the magnetic, simply black metal cap, and the strongly reduced label already hint that you are dealing with a noble and calm representative of its kind (the current photo in the database is unfortunately outdated; the one for "Essence Noble (2023) / Eau Noble (2014) | Le Galion," for example, fits). It does not want to scream, it does not fight with elbows for a place in the front row. When you hold it in your hand, it politely and elegantly congratulates you on your excellent taste. Like a good tailor, it embraces you as a service provider, but it also knows exactly what it can do and why you are standing on its dressing podium to have your measurements taken.

If this description applies to all bottles in the current collection of Le Galion, the paths now diverge depending on the choice of fragrance, and here we should finally talk about Cologne Nocturne:
The name is wonderfully chosen and could hardly better summarize the overall impression that the fragrance leaves. It starts with unsweetened citrus and a well-perceptible, strong lavender note that instantly envelops you in a fragrant protective shield, from which noise and stress effortlessly bounce off. It fulfills this task with much elegance and without shouting. The lavender accompanies you throughout the entire fragrance pyramid, sometimes more, sometimes a bit less, but always with two fingers on the inner wrist to ensure that the pulse never rises above 80.
Soon, finely tuned green spices and soft woody notes join in, although I cannot distinctly identify any of these protagonists separately. With the fragrance notes in mind, my brain wants to recognize patchouli and also the distinctly characteristic sage, but without this crutch, I dare to doubt that I would have dissected these notes. Fresh, woody, spicy would probably be the essence of the fragrance description.
What all the orchestrators of this piece have in common in the sum of their interplay is the naturalness that this fragrance radiates. The transcendent impression of original perfumery art from long ago almost inevitably spreads.
Thus, the Cologne of the night gently brings you down. It takes you protectively in its arms and allows you to forget the madness of this world for the moment of inhalation.
I do not know what the term haute parfumerie ultimately stands for, but for my part, I would classify this fragrance in its entirety as part of that haute parfumerie.

Night Poem
Uncommented Fragrances No. 74

"Great Bear, come down, shaggy night,
cloud-furred creature with the old eyes,
starry eyes,
through the thicket breaking shimmering
your paws with claws,
star claws [...]"
(from Ingeborg Bachmann: Invocation of the Great Bear)

Without wanting to delve into the complicated interpretation of hermetic poetry, it can be said that Ingeborg Bachmann's verses, which are only quoted here in short excerpts, are imbued with a calming yet threatening atmosphere. The night reveals itself in its quiet, serene, melancholic, and nurturing aspect, but also in a dark, impenetrably deep, and overwhelmingly menacing one. The world becomes mysterious in the night.

A nocturnal Cologne, so (m)eagerly my clumsy translation, initially seems to be an ambivalent affair, lost between all claims: Colognes are also meant for refreshment (like Le Galion's "Cologne"). A Cologne 'Nocturne', on the other hand, should not only refresh but also soothe, gently accompany sleep - and not just on a hot, tropical night, but also on cooler, moderate days.

Le Galion has cut this Gordian knot by simply choosing the very ingredient that is attributed with both refreshment and calming: lavender.

In times like these, where true lavender in fragrances is at best relegated to the role of a fresh opening in arbitrarily scented men's fragrances, one might have forgotten to appreciate the natural scent of this plant. Considering the many derogatory comments about classic lavender fragrances (a particularly beautiful one that often suffers this fate is, for example, Caron's pour un Homme), it becomes clear that lavender "pure" in the men's segment sometimes stands for stuffiness, old-fashioned charm, café afternoons, and conservative men's wardrobes. Those who see it this way will not be helped by this Cologne.

A small digression: It is also hardly known that true lavender is used in natural medicine for signs of inner unrest, nervous exhaustion, or sleep disturbances. Those who don't believe it should try it out, perhaps with this fragrance or Caron's pour un Homme. It works.

That the fragrance also fulfills its task of refreshing and cooling is beyond doubt. It is bright, green (herbal extracts alongside the dominant lavender note shape the profile), has subtle citrus notes that only become perceptible after prolonged wear, and invigorating, spicy accents reminiscent of kitchen herbs.

The base, which is woody-dry, seems to contain a tiny pinch of tonka bean (which is not listed here) or rests on the aforementioned very gentle patchouli note, whose tones waft softly through the picture.

A note: Since I hardly read comments that revolve more or less centrally around longevity anymore, I want to warn here at the end that Colognes are generally NOT intended for long-lasting wear, but for subtle refreshment. In the case of Cologne Nocturne, it is likely that a long-lasting effect was not desired during application in mild evening hours, warm summer nights, or while falling asleep. For me, it would be quite the opposite. I do not want or need to smell the fragrance the next morning after evening application (by the way, a term that fits Colognes very well).

Le Galion has once again succeeded in developing a contemporary yet classic fragrance that exudes distinguished elegance, just like almost all fragrances from this new old brand. This is a bold decision in the midst of a niche market that relies on coarse stimuli. Whether the brand can survive long-term with this concept and beautiful, yet subtle fragrances (Whip, Eau Noble, Special for Gentlemen, or Vetyver) is certainly questionable. I strongly hope for a long breath.

Cologne Nocturne probably does not belong to the must-haves of the brand, but could be a good choice for complementing and for the aforementioned purpose: a small night poem.

Typically, a cologne has a little herbs and spice added. This juice is a heat wave of herbs and spice with a little cologne added

Spicier and softer than regular cologne, less sharp at the start, it develops a subtle sweetness in the dry down.

Cooling-silver lavender becomes opaque, slightly creamy & liqueur-like-warm (herbs & hay, bright flowers, amber, soft wood). Elaborate & elegant.

Elegant, not overpowering scent - a year-round fragrance, I just wouldn't wear it on hot days - the main note is lavender.
