Close to Perfection
After much back and forth, I finally took the plunge and bought Special for Gentlemen blind - and - it is almost a 100% candidate.
Angua has already described the scent excellently with her comment. The fragrance has style and understatement, it is classically elegant and gives one a noble feeling. I still have an old bottle of the original Eau Le Galion Special for Gentlemen and must say, this reinterpretation is very close to the original from the 1940s. Perhaps it has been toned down a bit in sweetness, which does not bother me at all.
For me, the fragrance starts citrusy fresh and the lavender is already distinctly noticeable in the top note. I clearly perceive amber, patchouli, and labdanum as the scent develops; the cinnamon is, in my opinion, very subtly used and hardly comes through for me. In the base, the scent is beautifully balsamic-powdery, which I attribute to the vanilla and one of my favorite fragrance materials, opopanax.
Overall, the fragrance is worth every cent of its proud price of €140 and could replace Gravel Men's Cologne as my new signature scent. :-)
Anyone who enjoys classic men's fragrances in the style of Mouchoir de Monsieur should definitely test Special for Gentlemen. I am very curious about the included samples of Snob, Whip, Eau Noble, and 222, as I also know Eau Noble and Whip in the original….maybe I’ll also add a little comment about that….we'll see :-)
