Red Sand Dunes Intense - or: When it unexpectedly knocks your socks off ..
One Monday afternoon. I was strolling around Zara, trying to pass the time until the train was running again after the umpteenth breakdown. My thought: you've seen one or two videos recently where they advertise this Imagination clone. Why don't you go and give it a try?

I was undecided as my only experiences with Zara fragrances were from a time not like our current one (aka around 2016). I don't need to tell the connoisseurs among us what the quality of these fragrances was like back then. Nevertheless, I thought to myself: give it a chance. Cost point: 25 euros. Nothing to regret, so if in doubt, the little brothers will be delighted with a new addition to their collection and I have successfully killed time.

So I saw this bottle standing there, so simple and yet somehow elegant, and I could at least acknowledge that Zara have taken a big step forward in the presentation of their fragrances compared to back then. I grabbed it, paid at the self-service checkout and opened the packaging before I was even completely out. And then it hit me.

In my career as a perfume collector, I've sniffed quite a few summer fragrances, from the cheapest La Rive to fragrances like Acqua di Gio right up to Imagination. I have never been so captivated by a fragrance composition that I thought I could make it my signature scent for the summer.

But then I'm standing in front of the same Zara, smell the first spray on my wrist and I'm shockingly in love. A summer fragrance that smells so incredibly good like a mixture of sweet citrus and a full basket of fruit AND has a resinous undertone? I was actually gobsmacked. The attitude with which I approached the fragrance and how it blew me away is something that only very, very few, exclusively winter fragrances have ever managed to do.

I couldn't stop smelling myself in the hours that followed. It was as if you were constantly walking past someone who simply smelled extremely pleasantly summery, except that this strong lasting scent was absolutely 0.0 annoying at some point. On the contrary, I didn't even WANT to stop smelling it. And that hasn't changed in the days and weeks since that moment.

I don't want to compare Red Sand Dunes with Imagination. Sometimes there are moments when I think it's a 1-to-1 clone, but then the next moment it smells completely different to me. I'll also spare myself a comparison with the original due to a lack of reference points. All I can say is that anyone who has been disappointed by summer fragrances should give this fragrance a well-deserved chance.

A moment I will probably never forget. I'm already looking forward to the days in the future when I'll take it out again, smell it and let myself be catapulted back to summer 2025.
