The signature scent of an Asian market
Intro

The Merchant Of Venice is a brand that has always interested me. One of the figureheads here is "Asian Inspirations", which I've been roaming around for months or even years.

Now he's finally here and what can I say? - This thing smells, as a comment below me already suggests, originally like an asian soup!

Scent

The first sprayer starts with a conglomerate of pepper and cardamom. Embedded in a hint of vetiver, the fragrance truly sprays an orgy of peppery pepper, black, colorful, you name it.
Curry is not included in the ingredients, but it also reminds us of those. Probably also because this spice is just as popular in Asian cuisine as pepper....Yes, pepper. But there is more to it than that!

On its journey to the base note and drydown, the fragrance unfortunately doesn't change too much. Only the vetiver sticks out more and more, with a little touch of the leathery direction.
But the spicy, peppery vibe stays there until the end. Towards the end, the fragrance becomes more and more convincing, as the soup spices decrease more and more.

Flacon & Packaging

The bottle is very reminiscent of a mixture of a vase and a small man. A funny combination, but one that also looks classy. The bottle is a real haptic sensation: beautiful details on the neck, the golden buzzing (that broom-like...thing, you know!) and the "hat" look very unique. A very nice bottle that fits perfectly into the concept.

But the packaging is the highlight! It is beautifully designed, with golden applications, details and much more to discover. Especially the medieval map, which shows the trade routes of the merchants of Venice, is one of the most beautiful gimmicks I have ever seen in an outer packaging. - If you get the scent, insist on the OVP!

Conclusion

Asian inspiration is not to be found here in the classic sense, but has this certain twist that the fragrance does not smell green, floral, but approaches the spices of the Asian world. Pepper, cardamom and later vetiver clearly take over here and are indeed very reminiscent of Thai curry Asian soups.
Over time, after about 3-5 hours, the fragrance becomes even more pleasing, because from the moment the vetiver takes over and with small leather components, it becomes a little soul-stirrer. Especially in late autumn and also in winter I see this fragrance predisposed.
All in all, I would recommend this fragrance only half-heartedly, as I still don't know whether the scent is good or rather mediocre. "Click" hasn't done it yet, but it can still come. But I always find such bulky, unique scents very exciting. And that is this one always.

Since Red Wood, I can hear colors and smell movies
"How much shower gel are we gonna put in our perfume?"

"Yes."

This is how I imagine the meeting about the concept idea of Red Wood, when the perfumer and 4 soaps sat in the office and decided: enough shower gel is not enough for us.

About the top note: The unfolding of the fragrance in the first few seconds strongly reminds me of a film from 2015 called "The Avalanche". The only difference is: While the film begins quietly and slowly as well as cautiously tries to build a bond with the viewer, the top note of Red Wood mercilessly overruns every olfactory cell with a synthetic avalanche of shower gel.

The heart note: After the catastrophe, the anaesthetized odour molecules, which were not taken along by the olfactory avalanche, reveal a new, sour note that has not been so common before: shower gel. Sensory enhancers should generally be used with caution. I don't know about the sniff of the Red Wood. However, I have the feeling that the world of smells is turning.

About the base note: While the last olfactory cells in my olfactory bulb play the title melody of Tetris in the orchestral version, my olfactory perception is in a state that is beyond good and evil. At the end remains a bleak, synthetic shower gel jungle in 80s retro synthwave style. Everything flashes, everything shines. Everything shower gel.

The secret: I can see here what the perfumer has cleverly tried to incorporate unobtrusively. A very special and secret hidden fragrance: Shower Gel

I'm not quite sure if I can hear colors or smell movies since Red Wood. But something has definitely changed since Red Wood.

"Take this one, he's like the Black Afgano"
That's what they said when I was on the island and forgot to take a perfume with me. Good thing Julian gave me this tip a week before and I suddenly discovered this square black and wooden chunk in the drugstore. The old-established scent aristocracy probably turns over in his grave when comparing "Black Afgano -> Black Ash". He can also do it quietly. But the comparison isn't that far-fetched: even if there will be better and more exact dupes - with cocaine "Black Ash" from Rammstein, a cheap drugstore fragrance is the first one to hit the right scent - and it's not that unsuccessful at all.

The external values: Already the black, matt packaging of the smooth cube makes a dark promise. A wooden-look bar runs through the centre of the cube as well as around its base, and could even represent the fragrance composition that this eau de toilette aims to achieve in a figurative sense - greyish and dark scents are caressed by a touch of wood and smoky aspects. When the bottle is removed from its packaging, where it is stuck in a fine foam base before being pulled out, an equally square-shaped body appears in the slightly brownish-coloured glass, with a stylish Rammstein logo on the front and back. A black lid hides an equally black atomizer head, which sprays the fragrance wide and finely, held and surrounded by a copper-gold ring as a frame. The flacon appears compact and solid.

The inner values: The first time sprayed on, smoky notes come towards you with a touch of leather. Later on, wood resins - but especially sandalwood - come to the fore and round off the fragrance. One has to admit that the Sillage is nothing special, rather flat and standard. But the durability (for a drugstore fragrance) makes up for that - I was able to smell the black ash for about 4 hours during a hot and hectic working day. On my clothes even twice as long and with a lot of luck a little longer, as I was allowed to notice, when I slipped into my everyday clothes after 11 hours, freed from my working clothes and was immediately surprised again with a good smelling kick of the dark cocaine.

The conclusion is: "the Black Afgano of the drugstores" Here we go. I know that with this conclusion, all the old grannies and granddads will have their milk tipped over from the Sunday table during coffee parties and blasphemy. As if the tattooed boy next door had turned up the rock music too much again. Life goes on - every perfume lover will feel that he or she will find a dupe in the world of niche fragrances, which he or she will claim as the forerunner of Rammstein's cocaine Black Ash. For us fragrance rebels, Black Ash is the clear attempt to be a cheap equivalent of the classic Nasomatto. In the end the fragrance is convincing. It goes strongly recognizably in this scent direction, even if it does not come close to the great model for a long time. For me personally, the sandalwood is too strong towards the end of the day and dilutes the otherwise solid scent. But if you like the sandalwood direction and don't want to spend more than 30€ - you'll love Black Ash.

Grab it while the ashes are still hot & fresh - André from the fragrance rebels

The masterpiece of the concept fragrance
I know little or nothing about bats. They sometimes fly through my field of vision while driving - or in the attic. I don't really like Batman either. I cannot draw other associations with bats. But this Bat gives me the olfactory impression that I have missed in my life with real bats: dirt, cave, darkness & damp earth in the forest.

On paper, these "scents" sound very adventurous. But that's why I love this fragrance so much. It reflects an adventure in a dark forest where I find an abandoned cave. With every step I take towards this cave, this damp smell of the forest floor rises to my nose. After a while he becomes so engaging that only one step into this damn rocky grotto brings salvation.

Finally I enter this dark and gaping hole. The remains of the forest floor that stick to my shoes are being ceded. This combination of mouldy wetness and dirt constantly waft around me, like the corona of a solar eclipse

I slowly roam this dark grotto and see nothing. I smell only darkness, rising from the sheer endless depths of the cave.

Slowly, very slowly sweet scent molecules rise into my nose. But not the kind that is pleasant, but a rotting, fermented sweetness associated with the colour brown. I'm going further in.

There is something magical and attractive about this creation of fragrances that should actually make me want to go far away. Any normal person should turn around here. But normality has no place here

After this journey has already felt like 6 hours, this smell projects as strongly as when you entered. The enveloping presence won't let go of me.

There is no change in intensity or radiance for the next few hours. I'm almost there

After mastering the arduous path over stumbling blocks such as banana peels(?) and damp moss, I see a faint dimmed light falling through a small hole in the cave ceiling.

It illuminates a small, noble-looking perfume bottle that stands on a pedestal. A bat in aristocratic dress can be seen on the label. I take the bottle in my hand, gently spray a little on the back of my hand and smell this fragrance that has accompanied me the whole time. I'll never leave this cave again. You and me. Both of us. We will outlast eternity. Even if you are the last of your kind. I'll never give you back

The bad lady wants it selfish. So do I.
Chanel Égoiste - at that time recommended by a dear friend, today perceived by wicked strangers ladies. No matter how many people like this fragrance or not, it can hardly be denied that it attracts attention. Damn, and how he does it. No fragrance that smells so "mainstream" and yet so "different" at the same time has come under my nose in recent years, like this Égoiste.

When I bought the fragrance as a bottling and tried it out almost a year ago, I was amazed at how different a fragrance can smell, the history of its creation going back exactly 30 years. For me, this eau de toilette had something evil, like a snake, like the color poisonous green and probably also like its bite
The durability is above average, the Sillage adheres pleasantly strong. The top note surprises at the beginning of the application with a multitude of fresh scents, which nevertheless do not whitewash the evil main character, but rather go along with it, at most holding it back a little. After half an hour, it's time for the heart note, which now reveals more of the true face of the Égoist - the notes become darker, spicier, but still fresh. This note smells the most pleasant to my senses and lasts for several hours.
Especially when you're on the road and in your everyday life, you don't even notice that the heart note eventually peels out into the base note. If you consciously smell the base note, you can still clearly see which eau de toilette you have applied, but you want to experience the pleasant bite that lasted the first few hours, which makes you think about whether this fragrance will be used again tomorrow. Even in the base note, the fragrance is still perceived by people. Whether in positive or negative is probably dependent on each character itself. To my astonishment, in the few days I wore it, the fragrance was appreciated by women with two compliments (three compliments, if you consider the mere perception of a fragrance also a compliment).

I was very surprised by this smell. It is one of the only fragrances in my collection to date, whose creation began in the last millennium - at least according to my research. If you like scents that catch the eye. Who likes fragrances that are different. If you like fragrances that don't have a problem being perceived as selfish or even being called that - for you, Chanel has created this Égoiste.
