More (fragrance) art than (wearable) perfume
FUMIDUS. An exciting name. The dark color of the liquid in the beautiful and timeless glass bottle is inspiring. Anyone who likes dark, deep, resinous, heavy and strong fragrances will understand the attraction and curiosity this bottle with the name "Fumidus Profumum Roma 1996" arouses.

The Italian niche house, founded in 1996 by the Durante family, is known above all for its strong perfumes, which have a very high concentration of fragrance oils.

Profumum Roma is my absolute favorite niche house. Fragrances such as Fiore d'Ambra, Orangea, Acqua di Sale, Patchouly and many more, I wouldn't want to be without. Just as noteworthy is the masterpiece, and in my opinion the best amber fragrance there is, Ambra Aurea.
All these fragrances are Italian craftsmanship par excellence.

But this one fragrance from the founding year 1996, Fumidus, is very difficult for me. I would like to like it, but I can't.
That smoke, birch tar and dry vetiver reminds me of a campfire that I've poured water over. This charred wood floating on the ground in this alkaline mixture is exactly what the opening smells like. And the opening of Profumum Roma fragrances lasts a long time. The first time I tested it, I didn't last an hour. I had to wash it off (and that didn't work, in terms of durability and strength).
I gave the scent a second chance, but it didn't get any better. It just doesn't feel good for me to wear the fragrance. It has an eerie quality. Dark. No hope, no happiness. I don't want to spray it on anymore. At least I have no desire to. That's why I sprayed it onto a test strip and left it to rest for several hours. The result: better than expected. The smoke has evaporated. The smoked birch is much weaker and you get the full power of the dry vetiver.

Now I have a clear picture in my mind's eye. A man, 50+, very well and expensively dressed, cigar in his right hand, a glass of Scotch whisky in his left. Sitting in front of a large burning fireplace that warms the room.

Fumidus is similar to Scotch whisky. At the beginning you start with the mild whiskies. Over time, you prefer the more special ones. Peaty, smoky and aged in oak for X years.

I still feel too young to wear such a fragrance and I haven't learned to like/love it yet. But maybe I'll be that man when I'm 50+.

At the moment, Fumidus is more of a fragrance art than a wearable perfume for me. It's like a very expensive painting by a very famous artist that I just don't like, yet it's very high quality.
