Summer Scent Series: Sweet Citrus
There is something inexplicably refreshing about citrus fruit with its tart, acidic bite. It gives a feeling of vibrance, and a nod to sunny summer days.
I was spoiled growing up with citrus trees in my yard - orange varieties, grapefruit, lemon, kumquat, and even cocktail citrus trees. Rinds were sweetened to perfection under the sun, and the fruit was only picked during peak freshness. But having abundant access to home-grown citrus also ruined my expectations.
It became difficult obtaining anything that measured up. When I moved away from my childhood home, citrus from the grocery store didn't seem fresh or ripe enough in comparison to what I'd had before. I soon realized that finding fragrances to accurately portray the citrus I remembered wasn't an easy task, either - as these notes frequently come across as too-sharp, "cleaner-like", or synthetic.
Over the years, I've been thankful to eventually stumble upon some true citrus masterpieces. So as an ode to sweet citrus, I share with you my favorite sugary-citric summer scents:

π 1.
So Pink Eau de Toilette
This opens with a burst of just-squeezed, sugar-topped pink grapefruit: the juice-filled flesh of the fruit sprinkled lightly with white sugar, and the slightly-bitter but oh-so-fresh rind. The middle has a bit of greenery with a white floral lift, and dry-down brings the after-taste experience - like the juice dried on a grapefruit's skin.
So Pink is incredibly realistic - no part feels synthetic. It will forever be my number one favorite citrus fragrance, and has been since it was released (I remember buying my first pink metal bottle in the late 90s/early 2000s, so it's been a while!).
Although the OG was discontinued and the newest reformulation is sadly quite different, you can still find sealed boxes of the original formula every now and again if you set up search alerts. It is worth the hunt!

π 2.
Lemon No. 1999
Lemon notes can often veer into the too-sharp/"lemon cleaning product" or "Lemon Head candy" categories - but Lemon No. 1999 has none of that. It is instead a delightfully hyper-realistic, whole lemon. I get:
- Refreshing, just-grated lemon zest
- Fresh-squeezed lemon juice (only fruit - no added sugar)
- Lemon rind with a hint of solar sweetness, making it bright
Just pure, authentic lemon - in the way nature intended it to be.

π 3.
White Citrus Fragrance Mist
To me, the "secret weapon" in White Citrus is its ginger flower note. The zesty spice augments the freshness of the grapefruit and lemon zest, amplifying their ability to fulfill a fragrance thirst you didn't know you had. This is a well-blended and unique citrus profile, smelling much more expensive than it is.
Honorable Mentions

π
Seville Orange Perfume Oil
Seville might be in the top 3 most gorgeously-composed citrus fragrances I've ever smelled. My nose interprets it as a true-to-life pink grapefruit, with a bit of vivid mandarin orange to sweeten it.
But as lovely as it is, Seville Orange Perfume Oil unfortunately fades fast - within 15-30 minutes of applying (even when generously drenching my skin), it vanishes to nothing more than a whisper of what it was. I understand citrus notes are notorious for longevity issues, but the lasting power here was too poor with my own skin chemistry to justify splurging on a full bottle.

π
Pomelo Eau de Parfum
While So Pink Eau de Toilette is a sweet pink grapefruit focused on the fruity flesh,
Pomelo Eau de Parfum conveys a more complete picture of the entire branch. To me it's a realistic + acidic grapefruit, bitter pulpy rind, and green leaf + stem. Citric, fresh, and green - not super sweet.

π
Tangerine Boy
This is a lifelike "fragrance photo" of a very-ripe tangerine: ultra juicy and sweet with a bit of rind, in all its orange glory! Sadly, it disappears too quickly for me to consider it one of my favorites - but its beauty and realism is still worth mentioning.

there's also Oh So Orange, which I never really wear 'cause I dunno when to wear it but that one smells like a sweet orange bubble gum. I like lots of scents where citrus is part of the experience but not the focus... Brilliant White Diamonds has a lovely orange note but it's super fleeting ;_;
I think Gap's So Pink is the longest-lasting citrus scent I've tried, even as an EDT.
Do you get very much grapefruit in Al Rehab Soft? I've been curious about testing that one!
And you are right - there are a lot of excellent fragrances where citrus might not be the focus since it's fleeting, but it's still a wonderful part of the blend. π
Appreciate you taking the time to comment + share your thoughts! π
Yes if Tangerine Boy lasted longer, I'm sure we'd both buy it so fast lol!
You are right, Molecule 1 Mandarin is so realistic too and is very close to Tangerine Boy like you said!
What would you say is your #1 citrus fragrance - would it be Light Blue?
Appreciate your kindness π₯°
Sounds like we both enjoy Orange Sanguine and Pacific Lime! Orange Sanguine reminds me of Christmas morning, and Pacific Lime feels like the most luxurious tropical spa. I'm curious about testing the others you mentioned now, too - out of the ones you listed, which would you pick as your #1 favorite?
Yes the C.O. Bigelow Lemon No. 1999 is incredible - I don't know how they did it, but it's the freshest, most realistic lemon-focused fragrance I've found. If you end up trying it, would love to hear your thoughts! π
Hoping you have a fun, fragrant Friday too!
As for my favorite citrusy scents... I currently have Aqua Allegoria Bergamote Calabria, Mandarine Basilic (Forte) and Yuzu Zeste by Jo Malone. I just wish citrus scents were a little less volatile and stayed longer on the skin as they're so lovely for warm weather!
Oooh I haven't tested Yuzu Zeste yet, but I love yuzu notes and it sounds amazing - thank you for the inspiration π I'll definitely have to check it out!
I hear you - I wish they stayed longer on my skin, too. Darn those citrus notes being so fleeting! π₯² I guess that's when travel size come in handy, for re-application.
Thanks so much for taking the time to comment, I really appreciate it and enjoy getting to hear your thoughts! π€
You're the second person to mention Pacific Rock Moss lately, it sounds really refreshing - I'll try to get my nose on it, as I always enjoy getting to test fresh fragrances (especially aquatics!). Appreciate the recommendation!
Agreed that Seville Orange truly is gorgeous! I love tea-based citruses, too - they are the epitome of crisp, clean, and fresh. You have excellent taste!
I have yet to test LV Imagination, but it's one I've heard so many great things about - I think I'll have to, now that you've mentioned it; so thank you for the inspiration!
I know this is a cheapie, but have you tested Solinotes Yuzu? While no tea note is mentioned, I get a distinctive white tea + citrus; it's a very refreshing, mood-lifting blend (yuzu/bergamot/lemon + oakmoss/patchouli).
Thank you again, appreciate you taking the time to comment!
And yes, you must try Pomelo - I took a peek at your profile and saw you enjoy green + fresh, and that's exactly what this is!
Your son has great taste - Solinotes Yuzu is another excellent choice! I love how it gives off a clean, crisp "white tea" feel to it.
Thank you so much for commenting, I appreciate it so much! π€
