Why do you collect?

Before I drift off to sleep, I often spend those precious moments in between prayer and semi-consciousness, thinking about and evaluating the day that has gone by, or the motives behind my recent decisions. Lately, I have found myself reflecting on my perfume collecting habits and was inspired to write this blog after reading a recent comment left by a fragrance lover in one of my earlier blog posts.

"Lotte," I asked myself a few weeks ago, "why do you collect? Why do you own more fragrances than you need or can use up within a sensible time period... Can you really justify your decision to spend what you could have saved?"
The answer is always the same: I collect for enjoyment, for pleasure, to satisfy my curiousity, and to experience a scent I'd never known. I own more fragrances than I need in the same way I own more watches than I have hands, and dresses than I have the occasion to wear- for variety, for diverseness and to satisfy my polarising preferences. And can I justify choosing to purchase five new minatures when I have unopened full bottles in my collection? Yes, fragrance collecting is not a side hustle to earn cash on the side. It loses money, it is a hobby, and I have it on full authority that hobbies do not have to make financial sense... for the most part.
And with that, my conscience is always satisfied, enough to permit sweet sleep and slumber into the safety of my bed.

Why do you collect? Why do you own more perfume bottles than you may ever be able to use up?

I think I collect (though I'm not sure if I'm a real 'collector' :-) ) to find that one fragrance that will please me all the way. I'm thinking to hand over the bottles I will never use up, to friends, family or to a second hand shop. And I am also curious and I love the 'perfume talk', so many I try to be able to share my thoughts on it with others. But I don't really feel at ease when I spend too much money on perfumes, especially when I bought blind and wasn't happy with my purchase. So lately I sample more often, I think that is the best way to be able to get to know perfumes and to be able to share my feelings about it.

All your considering is right. Fragrances are a serious art.
Trying perfumes is a deep experience and perhaps the cheapest voyage or trip you can get. For perfumes are like expertise guides ,they know every little corner of every little backstreet they are taking u to.

For all the reasons you list and because it's a way of, literally, saving memories in a bottle.

I think I collect perfumes as a form of art. I love smelling different interpretations of notes and accords. Being able to wear those interpretations and smelling good are an added bonus. I also love the designs of various bottles and enjoy having them decorate my space. I try not to own too much bottles because I have limited space, but it's a hobby and I love collection stuff.

Why? No idea, really. I just woke up one day with 200 decants and 77 full bottles. I think I blacked out and then things span out of control before I realized it.
More recently I kind of came to senses. Now I am keeping a strict "one out, one in" policy, so I'm no longer hoarding but sort of balancing out my collection. Like, no more than one of a kind. Or two. Or thee. But no more, really :)
