A Surprising Win For Dossier
To preface this I have to reveal my bias: I hold a healthy amount of contempt for MGK, and Dossier has been a house I have sampled a few times at the store and found them all to be aggressively "okay." So why did I buy this? Admittedly I purchased a bottle on complete accident; terrible phone service is the bane of my existence. By the time I caught that I accidentally bought it and my cancel order didn't go through, it was too late to refund it as it somehow was already shipped out within the hour I made the order. So kudos to them for a fast shipping experience.
Anywho, now that that is out of the way, how does this collaboration actually smell? Knowing MGK it should smell like musty, moldy weed or something to that effect. Instead, what I was greeted with upon spraying was a surprisingly inviting, interesting, and beautiful incense, earthy, nutty scent.
A peppery incense lingers in the first ten minutes accompanied by a comforting sweetness; must be the nutty notes boosted by patchouli. After that initial spray, it evolves. The spices become more prominent, and that Vetiver-suede combo starts to stand out.
It's a trifecta of Earthy-sweet-spicy, and it's deeply cohesive despite being from a house that I have so easily discarded in the past. This scent makes me imagine a vagabond roaming the American Southwest in their 1990s Ford Ranger. They're a bit rough on the surface, almost standoffish, but once you get to know them they're one of the sweetest people you'll meet under the desert sun.

I hope you like lavender!
An inoffensive, clean lavender-heavy scent. I primarily get rosemary and gentian after that initial lavender blast, and as it progresses it smells increasingly powdery. It's not exactly my favorite kind of scent profile; I was hoping that the herbal notes would be stronger. It veers dangerously close to smelling like detergent, but depending on the nose that's not exactly a bad thing!
On my skin it projects for about an hour and then quickly goes to an intimate skin-scent. I can smell it on me for 3-4 hours before it fades. Fox in the Flowerbed, Saint Julep, and Telegrama have longer longevity on my skin, and I do prefer those three much more than this one.
It did smell a lot better on the paper strip than it did on my skin, so it can also be chalked up to skin chemistry issues.
How To Say Bicycle In French isn't going to turn any heads, and it's certainly not going to make anyone drop their baguettes, but it definitely won't burn any nose hairs. Definitely sample!

Disappointment
After I fell in love with Polo Red Extreme and enjoyed Polo Blue EDP, I wanted to expand and get something from the house that was a bit different. I had been wanting a tropical scent, and I love the smell of mangoes, so why not?
Unfortunately, Polo Black ended up being incredibly disappointing. Maybe something is wrong with my bottle, because it fades after only ten minutes and has no complexity. The initial spray does smell nice! It's a nice refreshing mango with a hint of patchouli, but it has no projection. Due to how fast it fades, I can't even describe how it evolves throughout the day, as it doesn't evolve at all. It just dies.
I can imagine it's amazing for people that have better skin chemistry with it, but for me it was a major disappointment.
