How do you rate value for money? 3

I see a lot of folks who cite retail price when setting the "value for money" rating on a fragrance, but I usually go with the price at discounters, if they are available there. For example, brands like Amouage or Nishane that are readily available at discounters (at least in the United States), regularly go for prices under $150, while you'll never find Louis Vuitton under retail price (unless it is opened/used). For me to rate a Louis Vuitton fragrance's "value for money" higher than an Amouage, it has to be a lot better than the Amouage in terms of scent and performance. I'm curious how others rate it; is it unfair to consider discounters since they are not available everywhere at the same price? Should the brands be held accountable for their retail price even though you can easily find it for 50% off? Let me know what you think!

When I rate, I always consider the price at discounters, if available there. That is, I rate based on what I would pay. The retail prices are nonsense when you can find the fragrance for 50% off anytime throughout the year at discounters and maybe even less when a discounter runs a sale. I'm in the US as well. Rating this way can skew the rating if the readily available price is less or more in other nations.

I consider only the retail price. I live in Finland and mostly perfumes are available here in retail prices only. Sometimes you can get lower prices online or when you have a discount voucher but for example several niche brands and new perfumes are available only for retail price here. Also I find some retail prices so ridiculous that I want that to be shown in my vote, I want to question why they set that price in the first place when you could get basically the same thing for so much cheaper from another brand.

I consider both retail and discount prices. There are some brands, however, that I wouldn't ever pay full price for any fragrance from the brand (Bond no. 9, Boss, etc). Sometimes, the discounted price is more than I'm willing to pay. I admit the Louis Vuitton fragrances are very good but
not worth the full price tag.

I rate value for money based on retail price since most people do not rely on discounters (by that, I mean people who occasionally use fragrances and aren't necessarily fragrance connaisseurs or hobby people). I've been collecting for 2 years now and I've only recently started looking at discounters out of fear of getting scammed ( I know now some discounters are legit).

Thanks everyone for your responses, I think there's good points on both sides. I personally think most people who are savvy enough to be on Parfumo know about the existence of discounters and it's more honest to include their pricing in this rating; however, there is something to be said about keeping brands accountable for their high prices. For example, Bond No. 9's retail prices are ridiculous for what they are regardless of how much they go for on discounters.

I agree with you here. I think for the most part rating value for money at discounter price if the fragrance is frequently available at discounter prices serves the person reading the review better since most people that are taking the time to read reviews are also likely going to shop around and not just buy the first one they click on or see. I think it's better for the review to be reflective of the price most people are going to pay and it provides a fairer review, a lot of fragrances would be in different tiers and up against better / realistically more expensive fragrances at their RRP vs what their price is actually comparable to when you purchase them from discounters. Here in Australia for example Versace Pour Homme 100ML at RRP would be up against and more expensive than Jean Paul Gaultier Le Beau Paradise Garden 75ml, I don't think that's a fair comparison at all 😆when the JPG is at RRP (Can't get it cheaper from discounters here to my knowledge) vs the RRP of Versace Pour Homme when realistically you can get it anywhere here in Australia from a major chain-store discounter for $71 vs the $160 RRP. The only time I think I wouldn't use the discounter price is when it's hard to get it from discounters (a.k.a frequently out of stock or not listed) or it's impossible to get at discounters such as LV. I do think some RRP's are ridiculous and if possible people should point out in the reviews that it can be gotten for much cheaper than RRP.

I usualy buy online (at reliable webshops), simply because what is sold in perfumeries is often not my taste (seldom a classic Givenchy or Guerlain in Douglas or in Ici Paris). Online most perfumes are less expensive and in the perfumeries prices are often a little bit lower than on the brand's website. So, when rating the price, I rate what I've paid for it, but taking the retailer's price and the price on the brand's website in consideration.

But, apart from that, rating a price as high, low or as good value is also very subjective. I think 200 euro's for a perfume is very expensive, others may find that very affordable.
