fisticuffs in a cathedral
Pure pepper on ginger violence. (Albeit poetic violence). This stuff is feisty, pugnacious. Beyond the spice there’s some churchy resins and oiled woods egging on the fight. There is also a definite mosquito repellant accord in the first few minutes, but more lemongrassy/herbal-remedy than 99% DEET. I wore it to work and was on edge the whole day, though my sinuses have never felt clearer. Probably makes a great anti-insomnia aid.

Mental Snapshot: What I’d wear if I wanted to fight someone. Like bare-knuckle brawl style, but somewhere classy – perhaps a mahogany-panelled library or an opera house. Fisticuffs in a cathedral.

tl;dr: aggro herbal

Smoky, gingery, green herbal elixir
Silphium demonstrates the endearingly nerdy interest of some artisans in repurposing old materials and traditions for modern ends; Antonio Gardoni, perfumer of Bogue, created Maai, for example, when he discovered a stash of barrels of vintage raw materials in a disused warehouse. In the case of Silphium, Stora Skuggan wanted to create the scent of Silphium, an ancient plant native to modern-day Libya that was used for medicinal purposes in Ancient Greece. Pedanius Dioscorides, in 70 BC, described Silphium as having a 'very healthy aroma', and it's possible that it was used as a contraceptive or even an aid to abortion.

The perfumers, probably working off the information that Silphium may have been related to fennel or asafetida, built an accord that smells like an ancient salve made from sweeping armfuls of culinary herbs and spices off the rack. But whatever medicinal pungency might have resulted from this is mitigated by the cheerful zing of freshly-grated ginger root, which sluices the dense herbal canopy with heat and sunshine. Indeed, layered with a fizzing incense note, Silphium smells more like a good mood than the inside of Hippocrates' medicine chest, and that's a good thing.

The clove and black pepper accents rev up the spicy and metallic aspects of the Silphium accord, making it feel half-clean, half-sweaty. Crucially, there's no amber or vanilla to blunt the spice, so things never get maudlin. It does, however, smell incredibly soapy in a happy, effervescent way. Although Silphium doesn't really remind me of any other perfume, I'm confident that anyone who loves the sooty, airy incense in Timbuktu (L'Artisan Parfumeur), the clovey resins of Eau Lente (Diptyque), and the luxurious soapiness of Castile (Penhaligon's) would also love this scent.

The Cure for Everything
"For years we searched for Silphium—the ancient plant that is said to have cured diseases, stirred desires, and enriched empires.

My colleagues called off the expedition. The grant money is gone and our reputations remain buried in the Libyan Desert. Why am I still here looking?

I leave the ruins of Cyrene and head up a hill towards trees. I stumble upon a stone relic that does not appear on any map. I circle it, sketching its shape into my journal.

And there it was. Silphium.

A thick stalk with crowns of yellow flowers and seeds like tiny hearts. The scent of ginger, cinnamon, and clove rose around me like incense in a church. I inhale deeply and my mind clears.

I was staring at the cure for everything.

I could take it and change the world, but we always destroy what saves us."

Smoky Ginger or the Metal Musical
Wolle's wife had a birthday, Hotte reminded him in time to avoid embarrassment and so Wolle organized a present. He avoided telling Ilse's age, because he didn't have it ready ad hoc. No big deal. Ilse was happy because Wolle had bought musical tickets for the Schalker Arena. Definitely a step forward, the last time he took his wife out was also to Schalke, but to a monster truck event. To Ilse's displeasure, Wolle was already drunk before arriving and caused a short interruption of the event as he exposed his upper body (envious looks of other ladies in view of the ample bust included) and then tried to stop the Grim Reaper with a red cloth like a torero. Unfortunately, he fell several times in the mud and had to be rescued in the end, because he got his butt up, but his head got stuck in the mud.

Here, however, it was a real musical. Thought Ilse. Then, the morning before the event, she noticed it was about a metal musical. So Wolle looked like always; bloated, staggering gait, leather cowl and Lemmy shirt. Well, Ilse thought, at least he won't stand out negatively there. Not extremely negative.
Hardly arrived, it jammed forever at the entrance. The guests became restless, there was some commotion and Wolle swung himself to the ringleader of the belligerent pack. He took off his shirt, waved it and shouted indefinable phrases. In the process, he spilled beer on his free beer belly.

"See that fatty there, Meier?"
"Well, hello, he's got a bust. My wife has less. I wonder if they're made."
Rohloff rolled his eyes. "Who cares. You know our protagonist has dropped out and the event is about to be cancelled. All that lovely money we have to pay back. Get me that unrestrained fat man sometime, as shameless as he is, we'll win him for the musical."
No sooner said than done. Wolle resisted though as security led him away, ripping his leather pants and everyone seeing his laundry batch 1980, it just didn't help. Once they arrived, Rohloff and Meier talked to Wolle Wollny.
"What's her name?"
"Uh, Wolle. But for you also the sexmachine from Herne." - "I believe that immediately because of the Oberw..." - "Meier!"
Meier pulled together startled.
"Listen, we need a new singer for the musical. You're a metal fan, aren't you, and you can get it playback-wise?"
"Huh?"
"...How much do you want for a stage performance?"
"I'm not that easy..."
"A case of beer?"
"A WHOLE crate???.... shut up wool, poker face...well, just a crate then?"
"Yes...."
"Plus empties?"
"Ok, fine by me."
"Ha! I'm in then!"

The entry now went on and everyone took their seats, it was on, before that Wolle sprayed himself with Silphium by Stora Skuggan, it sounded like a Scandinavian black metal band with a modern album title, like they had been back. Like Wolle now on stage. Because that's where he's been before, filling halls. For one day. A gym. Back in fourth grade when he mimed the King of the Tigers of Borneo. But that was another story. So Wolle started his performance on stage, making changes whenever it made sense to him:

"Nothing to prove
Just a drunken rock'n roll freak
You call your metal black
It's just alcoholfree and weak
We're too old
Too cold"
Wolle gave everything, didn't even notice that his microphone was off and wanted to throw himself into the crowd, but stumbled and knocked over the guitarist. Nevertheless, he was heard well because he whined full of fervor. The first audience members grumbled because of the obviously not live-played resp. bad music. On it went but first the scent unfolded:

One noticed at wool the ginger smell which became sweet and gently smoky by the cistus. Under Silphium accord he could not imagine anything. He will hardly be alone with a plant, which was probably already extinct in ancient times. Successively, the sweetish element lays down and it remains a minimally sharp, but very clear ginger.

Next song:
"Let me ride the horsepower drunk over the chin to Iserlohn
Back to the brewery of the lion where I once was at home
Between your legs, look for last year's crate(-market)
But there's no beer left"

Wolle gave everything, let here even a Basic Instinct memory moment follow including empty beer crate, because he had already emptied the Rohloff. The bulk of the audience turned away slightly disgusted.
Silphium, on the other hand, changed as the scent became broader and deeper. The ginger clearly dominated, but pawed around accompanying olfactory notes. Cinnamon is perceptible, is for me personally in combination with the ginger a little too pleasing. The tobacco provides darker moments, which come along strong in character. Already here the incense enveloped the ginger, still a little weak.

Now it was time for Lemmy which Wolle due to his alcohol consumption truly adored:
"I am the AA, you don't want to visit me.
I am a drunkard, no way you can change me.
I am the heavy pub debt, no way you can pay me.
I am the thirst and I know you can't take me."

Only with combined forces could the security get Wool to keep his pants on, the topless sight was already getting to most of them. Wolle was now so buzzed that the opening of the beer bottle did not always meet the opening of the mouth. Unfortunately, on the video cube to have been admired.
Wool sniffed himself again: the myrrh seemed spicy-warm, countered somewhere the effect of the frankincense, also seemed balsamic-sweet, and thus fit seamlessly into the scent scheme. The ginger became slightly time-delayed more dignified, which helped him to more elegance.

Then it continued:
"Bloodshot eyes - metal skin
Serpents tongue - dagger claws
Dragon wings - crooked horns
BEER"

Wool was so done except for the last word, which reminded him of drinking horns. Silphium was then also finished as to the subject of change. This creation now remained unchanged on the skin; it did not become more tart. This could have been thought from the pyramid.

So the musical came to an end, Wolle let himself be celebrated, at least that's what he thought, the crowd was already throwing beer cups and under shrill whistling he was dragged off the stage. His wife collected him with a wheelbarrow and then they went home. She probably wouldn't forget this birthday anytime soon.

Silphium reminds me of The Tycoon, which is due to the ginger combined with the incense. Personally, the balsamic element in Silphium is too much for me. In general, ginger is nice to perceive in fragrances, wear is always something else. That was comment number 200.

Almdudler with herbs?
Silphium is a very spicy fragrance, yet it gives me a hint of sweetness. The scent even reminds me a lot of Almdudler but even spicier. I would also use this fragrance 1 to 1 as a sauna fragrance. The fragrance is recommended, especially because Stora Skuggan is a very unknown perfume house and not everyone knows the fragrances yet
