Interesting Facts

French perfumer Maurice Roucel studied at the University of Paris and began his career in 1973 as a chromatography chemist in the laboratories of Chanel under the direction of the then Chanel perfumer Henri Robert.

Before Roucel moved to the German company Symrise (formerly Dragoco) in 1996, he worked as a self-taught perfumer for various companies such as IFF and, for over a decade, for the Dutch fragrance and flavor company Quest International, which was acquired by Givaudan in 2007.

Roucel is considered the initiator of magnolia perfumery, which is why many of his early creations contain the characteristic scent of Michelia longifolia (from the Magnoliaceae family).

Roucel often uses white flowers, amber, and musk in his works. Musk plays a particularly important role in his fragrance Musc Ravageur, which was released in 2001 by Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle, and significantly shapes its DNA.

Throughout his career, Roucel has received various awards from the fragrance industry, including the Prix François Coty in 2002, the French FiFi Award from the US Fragrance Foundation, known as the Oscar of the fragrance industry, and other important awards.

Roucel has developed fragrances for numerous internationally renowned brands such as Guerlain, Lancôme, Amouage, Hermès, Gucci, Rochas, Donna Karan, and Bond No. 9, to name but a few.
