soft woods with a sweet hobbity funk
Eidisis from Aesop is a melancholic, cedary soft sandalwood scent with a sweet, earthy Hobbity funk. A Hobbit who maybe stayed at home instead and never had an adventure, never became a barrel riding, troll tricking, goblin killing, elven cultural aficionado. A hobbit who never once left The Shire but who smoked his peppery pipeweed by his cozy hearth with his loamy feet propped on a hand-carved stool, who dreamed of giant eagles and great black bears and died comfortably in his bed with an adventure-shaped hole in his heart and a peculiar sadness he could never name.

For Gamine Lumberjacks
When Eidesis was released I had a short spiky haircut, bad acne on my cheeks, and exclusively donned a fitted leather jacket, black midi skirt, and knee high boots with a square toe. I bought it because it smelled like someone had condensed my essence into a tiny bottle. Gorgeously spicy with a slight creaminess. Just wish it was louder and lasted longer since it's ten trillion racks for 50ml. I'm only compelled to repurchase it because my friend now works at Aesop and can get it at a discount. I wouldn't bother otherwise.

Stanky or sexy? Why not both?
Here are the published notes:

- Top: Petitgrain, black pepper, frankincense
- Mid: frankincense, cumin, cedar
- Base: sandalwood, cedar, vetiver

I get basically zero petitgrain or vetiver off this. From the top it's primarily pepper and cumin for me. The pepper fades quickly, but the cumin becomes more prominent in the mid along with the frankincense and sandalwood appearing and continuing through and a touch of cedar at the base as the cumin fades out.

I'm not really a cumin fan in general. It usually comes off either weirdly gourmand (curry) or more often just stanky body odor. Here, it's played as a stinky BO note - if you're sensitive to cumin it might something you can't get over in this fragrance as the cumin note is fairly prominent. I get what they're going for with it, however: they're trying to blend it as sort of an animalic, musky, human note. And it kinda works? Sometimes it's a little overwhelmingly stinky, but once it settles down a little bit I absolutely 100% get the vibe - it adds a sort of sweaty, sexy, rolling-in-bedsheets, post-coital accord.

The sandalwood is a little synthetic to me. It's a buttery sandalwood, slightly cedary and ever-so-slightly powdery. It's not sweet or fluffy at all - think salted butter, not milky cream. It's smooth though, and keeps the cumin and pepper in line. Combined with the frankincense, there's an intriguing smooth, floral and heady cloud that permeates through the mid and base, almost but not quite like a hidden tuberose accord that reminds me of a room with thick, stale air that someone lit incense in a few hours earlier, like a musty function room in a church basement.

Longevity is weak-moderate, about 5-6 hours. Projection is moderate, and significantly increases with body heat/activity. Sillage is weak generally but increases in the heat.

This one is growing on me as i wear it more. Which is fitting I guess, given the name is a reference to repetition as method of memorization/understanding. The PR copy is dumb, rolling around references to Narcissus and Echo, mirrors, "liquid stillness of a pond or looking glass". I kinda get the Narcissus angle though: desire, sex, bodily pleasure. Previously I said it reminds me of a musty function room in a church basement, and I can easily still picture that. But if I flip my perception around it's this intoxicating, sultry, just-fucked bedroom scent instead. I like it.

Good sandalwood- if only there was less cumin
Intriguing pepper blast for 15 minutes, cumin for half an hour and sometimes more, then a drydown that's sandalwood and light florals that's great for relaxing and lasts for around 4 hours. Unfortunately the cumin overstays its welcome in my opinion, and very much limits how often Eidesis can be worn. It's worth spraying on fabrics in advance, however, and great as a warm scent for cold weather.

Cumin and close the door
You can't fault a perfume for being what it is. Eidesis is very heavy on the cumin (to my nose) and this 'reads' (once again, to my nose) as old sweat. Some sweetness comes through as well, so all in all it's not for me.
I know not everyone reacts to cumin the same way, so this review is basically saying: if you like cumin in a perfume, this is one to try!

I bought this because it smells exactly like the wooden floors of a Buddhist temple in Korea when you're praying: woody, damp, incensed.

This smells like damp, rotted wood. If you wanna smell like a mouldy tree, this might be up your alley

Lightly spicy, intensely woody. I can clearly pick up on the cumin here which gives this a dry texture.

A delicate blend of creamy sandalwood and resinous frankincense with a fleeting pepper opening. Comforting and pleasant, if somewhat safe.
