Deserts and Bazaars with a strange dash of Citronella
While undoubtedly coming off quite sophisticated I find the patchouli’s a little too strong for me personally, and I also find there to be a significant citronella accord rendered between the florals, patchouli and medicinal clove. Despite that, it still manages to smell extremely classy, and I’m also able to see the North African connotations, depictions of silky, mineralic deserts and lively bazaars abound. Nonetheless, I’m afraid it’ll be a scent I mostly prefer to smell on others.

Sillage strong at first becoming moderate rather quickly, longevity moderate as well. Drydown smells quite pleasant. A bit overpriced in my opinion.

Bravo, good sir!

New found nostalgia
Edit 3/31/26 - I have acquired a decant of this, and for a week this has been the only fragrance I have worn. It is that good! At first, the bug spray/citronella accord took me aback, but the more I wore it, the more I began to appreciate the delicate mixture of wild jasmines, ylangs, roses, with the incense-y patchouli and cloves. Although not listed, I somehow smell basil in the middle stage of its progression. Whether it is real, or something is playing a trick with my nose, it adds a layer of fragrant spiciness that makes the soft cloud of wild, dewy florals with patchouli somewhat prickly. A staple in summer for incense lovers like me! Projection is subtle (aside from the blast of citronella in the first 15 minutes), almost a skin-scent with a close sillage, and the scent is gone in about 6-7 hours. I wish it stayed more—given the price and all—but it is great for wearing on occasions when you want to have a little indulgence without disturbing anyone and your olfactory senses.
I finally mustered the courage to visit my local Aesop store the other day (it had been there for what, three, four years now?). To my surprise, I found myself talking to a very nice salesperson who helped me find a fragrance: something incense-y, for the summer. Marrakech was my first pick because I liked it from the start, but it was not in a typical way.

The initial combination of jasmine and bergamot strongly reminded me of an organic bug spray that my mom used to spray on me. The concoction of herbs and, in this case, rather wild and unsweetened florals made the scent refreshing. I do not mean to imply that this is a bad thing. Rather, first off, I was impressed by how fresh it felt, and second, Marrakech transported me back to the nostalgic lane right from the beginning.

The scent progressed to a cozy mix of roses, jasmines, ylang-ylangs (not listed here), and patchouli. The flowers here were all blossoming in the wild, by the lake in a national park my parents used to take me. The roses in particular were musky, with a prominent powdery quality which would later take the spotlight in the drydown. And, as a patchouli lover, this was a pleasant blend of translucence and earthiness, adding a touch of grounding qualities to the wild, partially dried flowers.

The next day, I was sitting on my chair in the dining room, where I had left my sweater on which there was some residual scent of Marrakech. The powderyness of the roses had become so much more prominent, with herbs and spices helping to uplift and tighten the edges. Initially, I was searching for the source of the good smell in my mom’s coat (which was also hanging there), but in the end, I was surprised by the multi faces of this scent. Herbal, wild, woody, fluffy. Cozy but sophisticated, with lightness and accompanying warmth.

Wearing Marrakech was like watching a video from the childhood in 4K. I would definitely order a decant of this soon, and make more good memories wearing it.

Respectful and warm, but you should love cardamom
You can’t have everything. On one hand, you want the ingredients to be natural; on the other, you expect the perfume to last an entire day. Is that even possible? And is it really necessary? At the risk of making half the perfume community roll their eyes, I personally like being able to wear a different scent in the second half of the day. And I enjoy smelling natural oils and essences.

Aesop takes an interesting approach here, one that I really appreciate: the brand’s fragrances are as natural as possible—and they smell that way, too. They don’t fill the room, you can’t smell them from a kilometer away, and they fade well before the day is over. So what?

By the way, even though the name might suggest otherwise, this “Marrakech Intense” has nothing in common with the Spicebomb line. It’s not a failed spice cabinet and certainly not inspired by a market hawker. No, this eau de parfum is different—more subtle, closer to the skin, perhaps a bit more “niche” in its character (without being overly complex).

The opening is rather sharp and not exactly easy to like. It’s dominated by cardamom, cardamom, and more cardamom. But after a few minutes, the fragrance softens and becomes slightly sweeter. Interestingly, it moves in the direction of Creed Viking Cologne—with a citrusy note (bergamot in both cases), some patchouli and a spice from the same category: nutmeg in Viking Cologne, clove in Marrakech Intense. For me, Marrakech is an interesting winter version of Viking Cologne (though definitely not a cologne any more).

But be aware: Cardamom and clove are strong, exotic spices that you have to appreciate. Not to everyone’s taste. I wouldn’t recommend a blind buy.

Moving back to the scent: After about half an hour the dry scent of Australian sandalwood comes through. This is an eternal love for me. Wonderful! Natural, comforting, warming. It’s a more private pleasure, one that doesn’t create an opulent cloud of scent. The floral notes—especially rose—are barely noticeable.

Overall, it’s a composition that works well for travel, theater or the office, but also for a Sunday at a café. It is not invasive. The interplay of woods (cedar is also in there) and spices oscillates between warm, likable, and quietly sensual if someone
comes closer. Men will definitely enjoy it, though women can wear it just as well. A respectful fragrance with character—lovely for autumn and the first cold days. It suits forest walks perfectly, without overpowering anything else your nose might encounter along the way.

North African Spring
Monday morning...the streets of the souk are bustling and the morning sun shines down on the stalls. I stroll through the market and gather various impressions. I'm offered different spices, and I especially notice cardamom strongly. Amid all the action in the market, there are quiet moments when a breeze carries the scents of neroli, jasmine, and roses to me. I close my eyes and consciously take in the moment and all the stimuli affecting me.

This scene plays out in my mind when I think of Aesop Marrakech Intense. The Aesop brand is not necessarily known for its fragrances and offers more skincare than perfumes. However, I find that Aesop fragrances are criminally underrated, and especially Marrakech Intense does not receive enough recognition.
The scent is a floral-woody fragrance that is very unique.
The interplay of cardamom and the floral notes is incredibly beautiful; I could smell it all day long. Sandalwood and cedarwood come in later and add a warmth to the scent that I haven't experienced before.

The fragrance has good longevity, and the sillage is quite strong as well. However, I wouldn't wear it above 18 degrees, as it becomes really intense in warmer temperatures and can even be perceived as overwhelming.

All in all, Aesop Marrakech is my absolute favorite fragrance, and despite the relatively high price for 50ml, I will definitely buy another bottle as soon as my flask is empty.

Journey through Marrakech
A day at the market in Marrakech. On vacation. I walk through the streets and see all the spice stalls. In the middle of it, an older gentleman wants to sell me some roses. I move on and perceive all the wonderful oriental scents wafting through the air. But it is warm. So I look for something to cool down. Amidst the oriental fragrance and the rose sellers, I see a drink stand. It is a bit further away, but the scent of a cold, sweet cola draws me in.

That was immediately my feeling when smelling the fragrance. Strong oriental notes and a bit of rose, and somewhere hidden, the clove from the base note combined with the floral accords reminds me of a cola.

It's a shame that Aesop's fragrances generally don't last very long; otherwise, this scent would be even better. However, in my opinion, it is definitely one of the better fragrances in terms of longevity and sillage.

An inviting blend of woods and spices that feels charming and exotic, but also just as sophisticated. Feels timeless, or somehow ancient.

Beautifully spiced, almost cola-like. Well blended wood. Resinous, woody, sweet. Zero projection but lasts 4-5 hours.

On my skin there's a nice realistic cardamom note at first. As it develops, there's an unpleasant sour note.

Cloves and baby dolls, nice wood base though. Not getting citrus. Inoffensive, but more of a house scent to me. Zero projection.

Opening bug spray which I oddly like. Later develops into a cozy mixture of musky roses, spices, and refreshing woods. Calming & translucent
