Another Ambroxan Bottled as Niche Perfume

Why does Le Labo ANOTHER 13 smell so familiar to me? Maybe because it is essentially a base in near ubiquity at this point in perfume history. Ambroxan plus some musk. And, for heaven's sake, don't forget the iso-E-super!

Okay, so I already sniffed both Escentric Molecules MOLECULE 02 and Juliette Has A Gun NOT A PERFUME. Been there, done that. Don't need a bottle, that's for sure, but I have a generous decant from Guusje.

I'll keep it on hand, in case I "forget" what ambroxan smells like. In fact, that seems quite unlikely to happen, as I feel that through this three-part exercise I am now capable of recognizing ambroxan bases in more complex creations.

I do hope that Le Labo will now return to making perfumes.

crisp magazine pages

Really does evoke a glossy magazine - the $50 kind you can only find at particular magazine stands. It's slightly too cool for me, with fashion and culture references I don't get, but I absolutely eat it up. Its thick pages will papercut you and not give a fuck.

A truly androgynous fragrance, I wear this on days I feel neutral but polished.

My First Love

I will forever be Another 13's ride or die; it is my first love and by all accounts the perfume that catalyzed my deep love for fragrances. Even as my love for perfumes as an art has blossomed over the years, I always find myself returning to Another 13. I bought my bottle of this perfume (my first full bottle of any perfume ever!) around the same time that I entered my first ever relationship, and while my ex is no longer in my life, Another 13 is. I'm telling you, this fragrance literally outlasts relationships.

While the "my-skin-but-better-Iso-E-Super-clean" fragrance has become oversaturated within the perfume market, Another 13 steadily maintains its position as the paragon of the archetype.

Slightly sweet pear and that dances on top of a powdery jasmine and Le Labo's signature base of Iso E Super and musk, this scent is indescribable while still remaining memorable (spoiler alert: I'm still going to try to describe it). Even after an intimate 3 year love affair with this fragrance, which I don't see ending any time soon, I still struggle to put into words exactly how it smells to me.

There is a bit of a dusty, powdery quality to it that does not pull musty nor dank. It's more like the olfactory equivalent of looking through frosted glass; it merely softens the edges of Iso E Super's more synthetic qualities. Another 13 is cozy, like you showered last night and are waking up in clean (but not quite freshly laundered) sheets after sleeping in. There's also a mildly salty quality to this scent that really causes it to just melt into your skin. Combined with the slight powderiness, it truly becomes impossible to tell where you end and where Another 13 begins. Literally it sits on my skin so perfectly that it feels like this was formulated specifically for me; Nathalie Lorson if this is your way of proposing my answer is yes.

This review is incredibly biased, but I don't care: this is my official love letter to Another 13, the great love of my life. Another 13, I will never love anything or anyone the way I love you.

So faint as to be undetectable on me

I received the full official Le Labo sample set as a gift, and I’ve been having fun trying them out. But I think of Another 13 and Ambrette 9 as the two “ghost perfumes” of the lot. They are both so faint as to be almost undetectable on my skin. What I can manage to smell is nice, but it’s barely there. I have no idea at all why; the rest are perfectly strong and distinguishable from each other. Even the ones I’m not so keen on at least smell like SOMETHING. But these two? Ghosts.

I see from previous comments that others have had the same experience. Some speculate it’s the ISO E Super, and report similar effects with JHAG’s Not A Perfume and MFK’s Baccarat Rouge 540. For me, though, Not A Perfume smells like hot garbage on my skin, yet BR540 smells delightful. So I don’t know if it is the ISO E Super!

Ah, skin chemistry...what a mystery you are. Still, it’s what keeps things interesting!

Mother of BR540

The mother of Baccarat Rouge 540? I think so...I do not know any other fragrance that combines an overdose of Ambrox/Cetalox or a variation as such with Veramoss IFF (oakmoss) and Hedione (transparent jasmine or white flower petals) at this level prior to this one so gotta give credits to Nathalie Lorson for coming up with such minimal yet likeable creation in 2010. I always respect the pioneering blends a lot even if they couldn't catch the sweet moments in perfumery like BR540 going viral.

You can just tell by the reviews here: 40+ matches for "BR540" or "Baccarat", but if you go to BR540's page, there is around 5 mentions of Another 13 which suggests people are taking BR540 as the baseline, I say it should be the other way around...But that's what social media and word of mouth does to you.
