Well balanced trip to see my grandmother
When I could not find "Maze" by typing it in the search bar I almost thought it was "AMAZE" but I knew AMaze did not have oud.

It does indeed start off as a nice Rose Oud. Quite Strong, but wearable. I would wear it through any season, because the rose and settling into a pleasant musk. I can tell the rose is of superior quality and Damask if I am correct? The rose is young, yet vintage, even my mother who dosnt like rose still liked it, because it was well balanced with the oud.

I picture walking into my grandma's house. First struck by a wonderful rosy smell of the garden outside her house. She welcomes me at her door smelling fresh of oud. The oud is not tart or dry, but is fresh and quite soapy on its drydown. We settle for tea at her table the musky smell of her house brings back memories of childhood for me as we talk well into the afternoon.

Wonderful scent! It is not quite strong enough nor last long enough for me to pay over $40 for a large bottle.

West-East Crossover for Every Day!
Due to AbuSafiyya and his new online shop, finally, the Arab fragrances come a bit closer to us. I got samples from him – and of course my first test had to be Maze! I got attracted by the nice flask into which Al Haramain fills the oil. However, my test was about the spray, not the oil, and some research on the internet seems to indicate that they are different, even though the name is the same.

We already know: if western brands copy the traditional Arabian style of perfume the result can be quite different. But with Maze, an Arabian brand covers the western style! They do it very well, but without completely hiding where they come from.

Maze does not at all start with the well known rose and oud combo which by now determines the cliché of Arabian perfumery. It is about musk – and musk or “misk” has been left out by the current Arab perfume hype. The rather whitish “misk” I smell here is already known to me from other Arab perfumes. It is accompagnied by a dry amber as you can find in numerous western perfumes. This combination is just solid; it forms a not too mellow, robust basic structure that this fragrance is built upon.

On this basic structure, we find a texture of different notes that is rather complex for an Arabic fragrance. As head note, Maze invents pleasantly tart, somewhat herbaceous notes. Within half an hour, Maze transforms itself from a Fougère into an Amber-Oriental. Notes of honey and florals enter the scene – however, just as discreet as it is right and proper for a sportive men's perfume. Approaching the base note – which comes rather quickly – I can detect more and more aspects of Arabian perfumery that I already know. I smell discreet echoes of the sweetness as it is in Micallefs Aoud Man, or in one of those heady, sweetish oils I already got to know elsewhere. There is lots of tradition in here, but they hide it very well.

In a way, Maze is very refined. It ties up with the fragrance experiences that the industry has impressed upon the global customer. But anything that is interestant about Maze is genuinely Arabic. And it is brought forward so discreetly that the not so well informed customer – or his environment – will not recognize it as such.

What I like about Maze is its discreet style, that comes along with that hide-and-seek game. For western noses, Maze is very much wearable. It is not bulky at all, and it can be used at all places where the traditional Arab perfumes would be simply too opulent. Just do not tell anybody – the connoisseur never tells!

Sweet-Fresh Labyrinth of Wood
Admittedly, I have hardly tested Arabic fragrances apart from Amouage and Khalis and am not familiar with them, especially when it comes to the brands.

But how did I come to this fragrance? Well, just take a look at the bottle of Maze. This is something I particularly like about most Arabic brands, namely the wonderful bottles that give you a sense of the mysterious Orient and may even inspire dreams of distant, foreign places, you know…

And since one can easily get lost in unfamiliar places (especially me…), the name of the fragrance is quite fitting, although I must also say that while the scent is good, it doesn't really have an oriental feel.

The scent:
Lemon and bergamot provide a citrusy and quite fresh start. Just a few moments later, it becomes a bit spicier or more bitter, which probably comes from the wormwood. At the same time, it also becomes pleasantly sweet, although the sweetness doesn't really smell like jasmine, which is indicated in the heart note. The roses, on the other hand, are more noticeable, while the orange blossoms are less so, although they do smell a bit better later on.
A little later, you can still smell lemons, but now not only with sweet notes, but also with a distinctly perceivable cedarwood scent. A bit of musk mixes into the base, while the remaining base notes are hardly detectable (perhaps just a hint of tonka bean, as the scent takes on a slightly powdery touch towards the end).
The fragrance remains lightly citrusy (in the base, of course, now significantly softened), sweet, and woody, with the roses becoming much stronger.

The sillage and longevity:
The sillage is okay; it doesn’t project so well that it would leave a trail, but it can be sniffed out.
The longevity is above average and lasted about six to eight hours on my skin.

The bottle:
It seems there are two bottles of this fragrance. One with square, yellow-green patterns, and another, which I will now describe, as it seems to be the current version.
So the bottle is rectangular and looks gilded. It is covered on all sides with squares, on which either the letters M A Z and E (for Maze) are displayed, or the inner part of these squares is transparent. Like windows with various but beautiful frames that reveal a glimpse into the inside of the bottle. Additionally, these “windows” are each adorned with a small gemstone. The cap is also rectangular, gilded, and has square patterns on it. All in all, a very beautiful bottle.
And from the front, it somewhat resembles the asylum from Asterix conquers Rome :D

Maze is a fragrance that, despite its presentation, is quite affordable, but doesn't necessarily smell cheap. I actually find the scent quite well-made.

Anyway, the fragrance is fresh and initially quite citrusy. This makes it perfect for warm days. I could almost imagine it as an all-rounder, but unfortunately, it’s too weak for going out.

Why the fragrance is called Maze, or actually Labyrinth, I don’t know, but I think the name and the associated bottle are quite well done, especially since it looks mysterious and puzzling, just as one sometimes imagines the Orient (or at least used to).

And it suits me particularly well, as I have the silly habit of having a terrible sense of direction and constantly getting lost like in a labyrinth (even with a GPS!)… baaah, you might be laughing now, but it can be so annoying sometimes :D

Anyway, I would definitely recommend testing the fragrance; I found it quite good.

Maze?
Maze would be the English translation for the word "Irrgarten".
I have no idea if I'm right or completely off regarding this fragrance name.

Abu Safiyya introduced me to this scent, and I decided to get it.

It really is confusing. And without a fragrance pyramid, it's not entirely easy.
I largely agree with Apicius' trained nose.

Musk and amber are clearly recognizable to me. This in a somehow subtle yet present, dry manner.
I have an association with it: "White Musk For Men" by TBS.
However, Maze is made more complex and refined.

It opens for me with citrus notes, which are immediately undercut by a light, not very animalic but also not floral musk.
It may also be that the dryness comes from the amber; I can't tell for sure.

A slight floral quality adds itself a bit later, making the whole thing softer, but not floral.
There is also a very light sweetness that fits well here. Arabic fragrances often contain honey notes, which I don't like in stronger concentrations.
However, here everything remains rounded.

Where Apicius perceives it as "herbaceous sharpness" that carries through to the end, it seems to me to be the citrus hints from the beginning.
Confusing indeed.

For me, it's a wearable unisex fragrance.
Suitable for every day, also great for work.
A bit foreign yet familiar.

It's not a powerhouse; the sillage is moderate. However, the longevity is quite good.
This here is an EdP.

A wonderful citrus-woody oriental, a bit floral after a strong citrus start, rounded off by musk in the end - highly recommended!

Beautiful fresh scent of fine spring flowers on bright musk + wood, with a sparkling wormwood/anise note that runs throughout!
