The rose is unmatched in beauty among flowers!
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, born on August 28, 1749, in Frankfurt am Main, Großer Hirschgraben, was not only the poet we all know. He was also a self-taught scientist. His uniqueness lies in his universality; he engaged not only in poetry but also in color theory and the metamorphosis of plants. He loved flowers, and he loved scents. Above all, he loved roses, so it is not surprising that one of his favorite waters was a rose fragrance. Goethe's rose water is said to have been created according to the recipe of this rose scent and was released in 1999 to celebrate the 250th birthday of J. W. von Goethe by the Albrecht perfumery in Frankfurt. The history of the perfumery dates back far into the past, to 1732. Goethe liked to visit the shop to buy ingredients for his experiments.
Many years ago, I got to know the Goethe House; I worked for some time at the booksellers' association, which was located - along with the Association of German Book Trade - right next to the Goethe House in Frankfurt am Main. Every day, I walked past the Goethe House on my way to work. The house still reflects the spirit of the poet and is now a museum. Once a very exclusive address, it is now somewhat overlooked by the world, slightly away from the bustling life in the heart of Frankfurt, near Goetheplatz, from which Goethestraße leads to the Alte Oper Frankfurt. Goethestraße is now Frankfurt's luxury mile, filled with chic and expensive boutiques - I am not sure if Master Goethe would have approved of this.
Albrecht's rose water was sent to Goethe in Weimar because it was not available there. This scent is truly special. It is not a wild rose scent, as I initially suspected, but after a short, very sweet yet fresh opening phase, the fragrance unfolds with fully bloomed, sun-kissed dark noble roses. It is so authentic that I have to keep sniffing it, feeling as if I am inhaling fresh roses. The sweetness lingers for a while but completely disappears upon reaching the base.
The sillage is quite good; unfortunately, the water does not last on my skin as long as I would like. The scent remains, but after about two hours, it is so faint that no one can perceive it except for me, and only if I bring my wrist to my nose. But that’s okay; it’s a reason to reapply. The scent is truly very, very beautiful, and I love it. Thank you so much, dear Joe, for this generous and so special gift.
