Secrets of an Old Palace Garden
I don't have far to go to Frankfurt. I take the regional train and I'm there in just under half an hour. I have a few days off, and yesterday I felt like a perfume sniffing stroll in the Zeil and surrounding area. There are long-established perfumeries with knowledgeable staff and fragrances that you would search in vain for even in Darmstadt, as they are very rare and extraordinary. This is also the case at the Albrecht perfumery, which has been there since 1732 and has 3 branches. Each of the 3 relatively small shops has a different selection with a large variety of rare and sometimes unusual scents. For example, I found Timbuktu by L'Artisan Parfumeur in one shop, which made it onto my wish list after testing. In the second branch, just a few steps away, I could see a few Caron fragrances: Fleurs de Rocaille, Nocturnes, Lady Caron. And-very important: Parfum Sacre. After these tests, I wanted to decide between Timbuktu and Parfum Sacre, but I liked both equally well, with different scent priorities. I couldn't make up my mind for that day and asked to see "Palais-Ville de Francfort" again, a scent created exclusively by the Albrecht family, available only in the 3 shops. What a fragrance!! It has a cool, citrusy freshness, while at the same time, elegantly restrained iris flowers emerge, paired with the warmth of neroli. As the scent develops, mysterious smoky-earthy notes come into play, which could stem from incense and vetiver, but a hint of patchouli might accompany the Eau de Parfum, even though it is not listed here on Parfumo. The name Palais refers to the historically significant grand ducal palace in Frankfurt, which also has historical importance. The scent progression fits very well with the name of the Eau de Parfum, evoking many facets of the idea of an old palace, or rather its garden. A fragrance that, as a family creation and exclusive distribution, in scent and quality, in no way falls short of the works of great perfume houses. "Palais" is not necessarily assigned to a particular season, as it has a bit of everything. By the way, I bought Palais and thus postponed the decision-making between "Timbuktu" and "Parfum Sacre," because "Palais" is a kind of "interim scent" and somehow satisfies the scent demands of the nose for both "contenders" at the same time.
