Interesting Elixir
I tested RC Elixir over a day and evening. Interesting how it develops. The opening citrus doesn't stay long - maybe about a minute. I then thought, hmmm, what, maybe about 60% to 70% Sauvage Elixir? Then surprise - what's that smell? Sorta like potato mixed with corn chips? Different and kinda nice actually. But that then started to retreat a bit as the leather and woody scent came to the foreground. At that point, it is really nice. And the performance is very good - not as good as Sauvage Elixir but pretty monster. Weird journey but I ended up really liking it. I'll be getting a full bottle for my collection.

A Surprising Study In Orris Butter
After some niche and designer exclusive line exploring, I’ve found some good stuff, but I always came back to this multi-sampler box my wife got me for Christmas a couple years back. Most of the samples were your average designer thing for 2023- fake vanilla all over the place as if every couture brand just heard about 1 Million EDT. But one sample stood out- Ralph’s Club Elixir.

It was baffling at first! A few top notes suggested Yeah, It’s Ralph Lauren Again. But then it gets going: what starts as this sweet bubblegum iris gets rounded out by… what the heck? Beeswax? Leather maybe? But also it’s kinda inherently the iris?

Turns out this uses orris butter- iris roots (the actual source of their scent) are fermented, forming a butter that’s both floral and waxy. Why? Well, it lasts a lot longer than your average iris extract.

Then I pondered what resulted for the rest of the day: this wasn’t a “blend of notes” forming some sort of overall accord the way you’d get out of an abstract designer scent or a Clive Christian “we said yes to everything” list of notes in a bottle. This was more like what Zoologist did to Japanese incense in their Yuzu Macaque: yes, yuzu and hydrocarbons and such were there, but they were only there to sharpen the incense on the top, deepen it around the middle. One ingredient with enhancements, like a dish with a really good scallop and the rest is just sauce and contrast as a complement.

Ralph’s Club Elixir does this to orris butter successfully, working around the edges of the ingredient to yield a scent that’s full of wax and leather and traditionally-masculine stuff… but floral. And eternal, I-just-showered-and-it’s-still-there longevity.

If you liked Prada L’Homme or the brilliant Infusion d’Homme but wanted something darker- or if IFRA-safe leather-mimicry leaves you wanting more depth and less That Really Isn’t Leather feelings- check this out. Most things dubbed the made-up “elixir” add wood - especially oud. Kudos to RL for zigging when the others zagged and trying something wild.

Orris Butter is not for everyone. Not for all types of skin, all types of sweat, or all weather. But you might find yourself, like me, considering a sample or decant for two years and finally getting a bottle. (And what a bottle! That metal flip-cap is above and beyond.)

[edit: you know what's weird? If I put this on my wrist or the back of my neck, instead of my chest where it's blocked by my shirt, the drydown has way more of the promised balsam fir absolute in there. That woody, piney edge on top of the iris and wax and such. It's nice!]

Similar but its own
This scent reminds me of the original release of Armani Code, especially in the opening. This is the type of scent I gravitate to and my wife loves this too. The opening and mid is more on the sweet side, but the dry down is more leathery and has some wood in it, but it still has that creamy smell to it. It’s a good performer and those that say it dissipates, I think really become nose blind because for me this is borderline beast. This could be a signature sent. If you wear it in the warmer months just go easy on the trigger. Also in the cooler months if you’re spending a lot of time inside, you might wanna go easier on the trigger. If you like any of the code DNA’s You will absolutely love this.

Lavender Rant
Performance: This performs well. It is a borderline loud projector for the first hour, then a medium scent bubble for 2-3 hours, then a substantial skin scent for the rest of the time. Last 7-8 hours. I've been able to get whiffs after 10 hours, and this is on skin. I haven't tried on clothes, but it probably does even better.

Scent: I think this is a decent scent, but I don't like it, mostly because of the opening parts of the scent.

There's a typical kind of lavender note in men's fragrances that's different than lavender notes in women's lotions and body washes. Next time you go to the grocery store, smell the lavender Dove body wash and compare it to the lavender not in some men's fragrance you have. It's quite different! The Dove lavender is floral and fresh in an almost minty way, while the lavender note in men's fragrances is this dank, almost mildew-y moist smell. I don't get why fragrance companies insist on using this dank lavender accord rather than a more feminine one because the feminine one smells better flat out, on men and women. The lavender note here is present for the first 2-2.5 hours, then it's gone and the fragrance becomes much better. The way the lavender note combines with the leather and fir balsam is just not good in my judgement. It smells like someone who rolls their own cigarettes and puts lavender in them. It smells like a freshly unsealed room of a man who lived with his mom in the 70s. Maybe it's the sage note doing this, or maybe it's the orris butter, but I think it's the lavender.

Lavender rant over. The drydown of this fragrance is much more enjoyable to me. There's a sweetness among all the manly notes that comes out more in the dry down. The fir balsam is very balsamic. It's not like smelling a pine tree but instead more like fir balsam sap; the green-ness is removed and all that's left is this camphorous-ness. I think it works to counterbalance the sweet leather. What about the orris butter? Girl, I don't know. I know what an iris note smells like, what a orris root note smells like, but not a orris butter note. If Systemshaak's review is correct and orris butter is a fermented oil of the orris root, then maybe I can individuate the orris butter note. There is a very noticeable fattiness to the fragrance. You know that smell of Crisco or un-rendered tallow? Somehow acidic and bitter at the same time, but to a very delicate degree? That's in this fragrance. Does it work? I'm not sure.

Overall, I think this just isn't a scent for me. It smells too decadently manly. I think the drydown works, but the opening just doesn't come together for me.

Bottle: It's alright. the badge on the front is plastic, and that's a bummer, but the flip cap is pretty cool and functional because it's not floppy. And the sprayer is very respectable. It's a 75ml bottle so that's a bit sucky, but who really cares if it's 75 or 100?

Timeless elegant fragrance
The fragrance starts with a bitter grapefruit, immediately followed by a tangy mandarin. The main player in the top note, however, is a spicy cardamom. In the DD, Ralph's Club Elixir becomes very balsamic, with lavender and iris coming into play. The iris butter gives it a hint of lipstick. After about 30 minutes on the skin, a subtle leather becomes noticeable and supports the cardamom once again. A beautiful fall - winter fragrance with a certain spiciness.

Citrusy opening that quickly moves to a mix of lavender, other florals + buttery orris. Unique quasi-niche waxy & balsamic leather dry down.

You are in the backseat of a 2002 Lincoln Town Car next to a tray of fine Cuban cigar ash and an open bottle of Pine Sol. Good longevity.

Fantastic in the opening. Sweet bubblegum DNA with warm iris. After that, strangely enough, more and more lovage/Maggi - really strange

Smells like musty leather clothing. Like an antiques centre. Something rather nostalgic but certainly an acquired taste.
