A Hint of Maleness & Sensualness
I remember very well my Arrogance Uomo. It was 1987, I was 23yo, and this perfume was sharing the market with Krizia, Missoni, Ferré, Versace, Trussardi, and Armani, all Italian designer brands. When I saw it on the shelf of a supermarket, in promotion, I tested the product on my skin, and promptly images and memories of that time appeared clear and vivid in my mind. I didn't notice any reformulations right off the bat, apart from a modification of a bottle's look. So I bought both the 30 and 75 ml. And what follows is the description of the sensations that this perfume still gives me.
Arrogance Uomo is an old school Italian perfume that boasts a rather unexpected development: is a green, aromatic, and woody all-round perfume. I'm not sure I recognize all the notes listed in the olfactory pyramid. Perhaps they were present in the original concept. However, on my skin, it starts nicely with a loud burst of citrus and lavender. The blend is intensely aromatic, bright bergamot, and soothing lavender is detectable and very pleasant, giving me beautiful fougère undertones. Soon, balsamic mugwort joins the mix, while the other opening notes quickly subside. In this first phase, the scent is fresh, with a notable influence of British lavender. It almost seems to sink your nose into a handful of freshly picked and crumbled lavender flowers in your hands.
The heart is involved, dimmer, with greenish geranium leaves and dried carnation flowers. The perception of white flowers is scanty, and the rose, if it is truly present, drowns in a sea of dark red flowers and greenish leaves. The herbaceous and fougère quality remains in this significant phase.
The bottom is deep, made of roots and moss, with a vibrant musk-like feel and a lot of sandalwoods. I get herbs and musk—a good dose of dry cedarwood and oakmoss that oozes later. Oops, I almost forgot to mention the vetiver, which you can smell from the first notes, and then it dominates as the perfume dries. The last track has a barber's touch, which could not be missing!
The overall effect is that of perfume with very virile tones: it is green, it is woody, it is earthy, it is dry, an aroma that is like a withered woodland. It's made of quality ingredients, despite its budget price. An exclusive perfume, still exciting today amid gourmand and amber sweeties, to admit that it does its job very well. Arrogance Uomo is one of those ultra-cheap perfumes with an exceptional quality of all respect, so beautiful that you can risk a blind purchase if you are fond of the genre. The overall quality is outstanding, with longevity that is still excellent, a full working day, and the sillage that is moderate after the initial blast fills the surrounding space. The nuances suggest rocking it during the chilly days of spring and autumn and trying on cold summer nights. People looking for safe office fragrances may consider trying it.
This review bases upon a 75 ml (2.5 fl. oz) bottle I own since November 2015.
