Roasting Roman chestnuts
A simple thing really – vetiver, mimosa, powdered sugar – but so suggestive of the soft, mealy deliciousness of roasted chestnuts floating on cold Roman air that it never fails to transport me. Castaňa is the perfect antidote to the loud, thick sweetness of modern perfumes. Ephemeral, almost maddeningly so, it demands (gently) that you pause and lean in to hear what it is saying. The older I get, the more I understand that two thirds of the magic spell cast by perfumes like Castaňa, Osmanthe Yunnan, and Bois d’Armenie is embedded in their quietness, so we should approach them with much the same attentiveness as we might the art of listening to incense (monkō).

A dry, sharp chestnut
A sharp, dry, herbal chestnut. I was really looking forward to trying this as I read that it smelled like roasted chestnuts without the sugariness of most chestnut-note perfumes. But somehow my nose/brain just didn’t quite ‘get’ this — all I got was this slightly bitter, dry earthiness (the vetiver?), and when I focussed hard enough, I could then detect the savoury chestnut note that I wanted so hard to come out more but didn’t quite make it. Sadly not for me!

Keen clone
The fragrance welcomes AugustA with a very dry chestnut attack. Gently peppered. Dry. After about half an hour, a minimal (!) nutty sweetness develops. One is surrounded by woody warmth, not too opulent. Quite unobtrusive and somewhat enigmatic. A rather powdery wood tone, from Iris, yes, but not too clearly recognizable. The chestnuts are floury. Vetiver clarifies and gives volume.
Far from gourmand. Keen clone of other chestnut scents, because not sweet at all, not edible at all, only slightly nutty. Even more fresh hazelnuts or chestnuts for me. If you like a colour, then creamy light brown, like the inside of the chestnut or a wholemeal flour. Shit, maybe a little gourmand after all? - Great scent!

Chestnut dries down to sweet, dirty, balsamic, tonka type of affair. Great short opening, poor middle and no nothing dry down on me.
