The Irish iris
Naïve as I am, I thought this was one of those tiny artisans. I figured they would be charmingly rural, get their materials from the backyard and distill them in the garage. I mean, can you name one commercially successful Irish perfume brand? I could not until today. It turns out Cloon Keen actually operates amongst the big guys of the industry and even raked in a few TFF awards. There ya go!

Frosted Moon is one of their older releases and their most popular one on this platform. I kind of randomly picked it, simply out of curiosity. I may be naïve, I do like to explore and take a gamble once in a while.

This scent profile is close to the greener type of iris - think Infusion d'Iris (2007) Eau de Parfum, N°19 Poudré or the less known Éclat de Joie . Airy, translucent and with a sparkling silver hue. Only in this case most greens are replaced with angelica dust. As a result this has a dry slight woody feel to it, while remaining as airy and translucent as you would expect from an iris-centered fragrance. The base consists of a familiar but well-suited fresh musk-vetiver blend.

At first Frosted Moon did not really impress. The green-iris theme is a bit common, but the angelica twist to it convinced me after all. I am going to keep this 10 ml decant and pretty sure I will finish it. Think it will work lovely in both office settings and as casual wear.

In the Iris Forest
As dusk falls, she spreads her wings and flies high up. In one of the tallest treetops among the dark firs, she finds a place for the night. She looks up one last time at the silvery, seemingly frozen moon before slowly tucking her head under her right wing. Here she is safe from all the predators that roam the enchanted, dark Iris Forest.

The story of this wild hen came to mind when I first caught a whiff of Frosted Moon. With this perfume, I seem to be falling victim to a little hype. Rightly so, in my opinion. For this is an incredibly beautiful iris scent that has found many fans here for good reason. I am once again baffled as to why such a fine fragrance would be discontinued.

I first learned to truly appreciate the scent of angelica with Armani Privé's Fil Rouge. Similarly, the angelica comes into play here before iris and ambrette seeds join in, creating that typical, silvery and shimmering iris that shines just like in fragrances such as Collection Extraordinaire - Bois d’Iris and its counterparts. But this fragrance reveals to us a different, sparkling iris forest. For here we have as a counterpart not incense, but green notes. Galbanum and vetiver join in, giving the fragrance a more rugged edge and creating that typical forest impression at dusk for me. Despite the musky notes, Frosted Moon never feels fluffy or cuddly. This is an iris scent with an edge that never comes across as dusty or - heaven forbid - even powdery to me.

I love iris fragrances and have tested quite a few, but this one is new and different for me. Like the aforementioned Bois d’Iris, Frosted Moon is not a sillage monster. It comes across lightly, delicately, and transparently, yet a gentle whisper brushes against the nose time and again. Those expecting a too powerful scent are mistaken here. Those who appreciate the quieter tones can embark on a beautiful journey into the iris forest with Frosted Moon. To where my wild hen lives and sleeps high up in the trees.

A heartfelt thank you to Faun Floyd for the sample. Say hello to the wild hen for me!

The Moonlight Sonata
I take off my shoes. My feet gently touch the forest floor. Dewdrops are already forming on the velvety moss cushions, but the smooth, round stones release the warmth of the day only slowly. The trees also breathe warmth against the coolness of the night. I pause, not wanting to tear myself away from this feeling just yet. My path leads down to the moor lake, which hides at the edge of the clearing. Whispering, small waves lap at the shore. A late blackbird sings its bittersweet song. Suddenly, I am again a little girl with braids and striped socks. Even in my parents' garden, the song of the blackbird accompanies me as I swing in the twilight on the swing, waiting for my mother to call me into the house, where golden light glimmers behind the windows.
The water of the lake welcomes me with an embrace. Gentle and warm at the surface. Only when I dive deeper does a pleasantly cool shiver wash over me. I let myself drift. The water carries me. Moonlight shimmers on my skin. How long do I linger like this? I do not know. Minutes, hours, an eternity … What is time anyway?
Back on the shore, I stretch out on the round stones. I enjoy their warmth on my cool skin. Water droplets bead from my hair and sink into the soft moss.

Now it has happened: I have become something I never wanted to be. Namely, a woman with a bunker bottle. But what could I have done? The need was great. After all, this is about Lune de Givre, or Frosted Moon, which was renamed and then discontinued. Rest in peace, my gentle friend and faithful companion! This fragrance was originally composed by perfumer Delphine Thierry for her own use until Margaret Mangan and Julian Checkley managed to extract the formula of this ethereal beauty for their newly founded perfume label Cloon Keen.
Frosted Moon is a delicate, transparent iris scent that starts with earthy carrot and the herbaceous-green notes of angelica and galbanum. Despite this initial coolness and freshness, bright woods, musk, and vetiver provide warmth, and so the silvery shimmering iris is surrounded by enticing contrasts, with one or the other gaining the upper hand at times. Frosted Moon speaks in a soft voice, yet to those who wish to listen, it tells a wonderful story of closeness and distance, of coolness and warmth. As if one were reaching out for the moon on a full moon night when it appears so close.
These gentle, melancholic tones struck by Frosted Moon remind me of Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata." And the feeling of sinking into oneself, surrounded by a delicate green iris veil, conjures the image of an incredibly beautiful living sculpture in Heligan's Lost Gardens, which unfortunately bears the rather prosaic name "Mud Maid."

Frosted Moon is an almost meditative fragrance that reconnects me with myself when everyday life overwhelms me. I can think of no occasion to which it would not be suitable, no situation in which it could seem inappropriate. By the way, I cannot complain about a lack of longevity: although the angelica in the top note weakens quite soon, I can still smell the beautiful iris-galbanum-musk combination in my clothing even a day later.
A perfume with great signature scent potential, and I am glad that I can be extravagant with the little remainder in my bottle because a full hundred milliliters await me.

Inexpressibly beautiful
Thanks to the fantastic review by @Marieposa, I stumbled upon this fragrance. She also left me a small sample of this treasure, for which I am endlessly grateful.

Because Frosted Moon is inexpressibly beautiful. It has a radiance that @Marieposa and @Augusto perfectly describe in their reviews. I too feel transported to a forest or rural Ireland, where the scent originates. Perhaps also to the coast. The fragrance radiates a coolness that is by no means unpleasant, but rather reminiscent of a cool autumn morning by the sea. A strong, yet not too cold wind blows. I feel a light drizzle on my face. Dense fog envelops the landscape and the sea in a gray veil. Somewhere, seagulls pass by, calling loudly.

I admit, I can't pick out all the notes here. However, that is not necessary to love "Frosted Moon / Lune de Givre | Cloon Keen Atelier." For me, a very cool and slightly herbaceous-bitter iris dominates, shaping the fragrance. Otherwise, it is probably the overall composition that gives it its character.

Sillage and longevity seem to be not very strong. That is the only downside of this otherwise fantastic fragrance.

Update from 15.3.2022: I have always had the feeling that the fragrance reminds me of the atmosphere in a song. Now I also know which one. "Sternblumennacht" by Nenia C'Allahdan.

It was midnight in the fairy forest
The light of the moon pale and cold
Rustling wind in ancient trees
And fog light full of lost dreams
There I saw them blooming by the wayside
Star flowers, bright as a glowing band

Ireland-Iris. Not for the Guidebook
Dew-fresh meadow, silver moonlight, ghosts, herbs, a few sheep huddling together. This is how the Ireland-influenced stereotype could already look for the scent of the Galway perfumers. Rough (sea) air and fairy dust. Dance in the breeze. Astringent ethereal beauty that is not seeking scene applause. Despite the almost scratchy angelica and the predominant green components, the iris root shines through like light - the sun by day, the moon by night - through a cloudy sky. The island of a thousand greens, of course. From velvety moss to grasses and shrubs swaying in the wind over the cliffs, everything is included. Daffodils come to mind as well, splashes of color, a brief rain, and again sunbeams falling through the clouds. All of this is reflected in this scent, which shifts between milky-herbaceous and shimmering light effects and somehow seems to mirror the earthly unreality of moonlight.

Such a thing cannot be accommodated in the mainstream. Nor in the guidebook. Frosted Moon/Lune de Givre is not quite the tourist route but rather the hidden modern as well as Celtic Ireland, including goblins and trolls and fairies, and as a panorama, the dilapidated cottages covered with a bit of grass. Somewhere, a rusty car lies around, and the people have long since moved away for work. Behind a gate, a dog barks. The city, on the other hand, is lively, and the people there are friendly.

The Galway scent is the opposite of opulent; the iris is dry, while a bit of moisture and rich herbs waft through the scent's landscape. The fragrance remains linear, only at the beginning is it harsh-spicy and somewhat carroty, while it transforms at the end into a soft, bright musk base that lingers gently on the skin. The astringency is masterfully intertwined by angelica, galbanum, and vetiver, while the underlying, the beyond the horizon, the other side is olfactorily embodied by the iris root, which so often, and especially here, carries an enchanting sheen, a pull, but also an icy seriousness; its celestial sphere is radiant but cold. A rainbow.

You often see that due to the climatic conditions and changing weather in Ireland, so it’s certainly no coincidence that the perfumers from Galway have created a wonderful scent around the rainbow goddess Iris and dedicated it to the silver moon.
Despite my associations influenced by the romance of Ireland and perhaps also by Heinrich Böll, the scent is abstract and modern and also a bit uncomfortable behind the facade.

The fragrance manages well not to overdo it and maintains its longevity so that it remains subtly but noticeably present throughout the day. I don’t find it light or simple, but very complex, and that’s why I love wearing it. It creates olfactory identification surfaces that cannot be described through fragrance notes or images. I’ve tried anyway; it’s, as always, just a snapshot.
Although it is fresh-green-herbaceous and suitable for men, the frost moon seems to suit women a bit better, says AugustA. Definitely a scent for all those who seek shimmer, depth, and yet something real, as it is not at all fairy fantasy or Irish kitsch.
