Galbanum aldehyde
Oh dear, what a suffocating opening. A thick cloud of powder grabs me by the throat and refuses to let go. Just seconds before I lose consciousness, the powder loosens up a bit. A floral type of aldehyde appears. Roses, violets and cassis on a firm mossy base. Soapy and quite classical.

There is an edge to this floral aldehyde, though. It is not all soapy bubbles. This contains loads of galbanum, for example. And when sniffing up close, I get a kind of sweaty sensation, almost like cumin.

1905 is actually an interesting approach to the floral aldehyde topic. Unfortunately, the overall feeling is way too vintage. Retirement age appropriate.

The Scent of Modest Ladies
First of all, a warning to all those who find soapy scents dreadful: You can stop reading here.

If you like soapy and/or nostalgic fragrances, you should take a closer look at this brand. Société Detaille is a traditional company that was founded in 1905 by Countess de Pesle and chemist Marcellin Berthelot, according to their website.

Also in the founding year, one of the first perfumes was released, aptly named after that year.

So, what does 1905 smell like?

Soapy? Yes, but of the noble kind, as the soap accord is neither cheap nor annoying. It serves here more as a kind of framework for the other fragrance components, without spreading a clinical cleanliness.

The opening is more green than zesty, and the violet doesn't stand a chance against galbanum and blackcurrant (I suspect it's more the leaves here).

With the heart note, a classically bitter floral accord comes into play. Sweetness is nowhere to be found here.

The very mossy base sets in quite late and allows 1905 to continue fading out in a greenish manner.

The longevity is very good. 1905 has a decent presence and the sillage is very pleasant.

I must admit that 1905 could use a little splash of sin, as the overall composition feels very ladylike, almost modest. But at the time of its creation, ladies of standing did not want to smell provocative or sensual, so it fits the picture again.

Personally, I think it's great that such olfactory gems are still available.

Time Travel
The first spray of the previously unknown "1905" gave me the feeling this morning that I had embarked on a time travel: It was as if I were in close proximity to my grandmother, who left her earthly existence many years ago.
This flashback is certainly partly due to the components of a Cologne, let’s call it 4711, that accompanied my grandmother everywhere, which overwhelmed my nose regardless of the fragrance pyramid in the top notes.
However, very soon these notes recede behind a slowly and steadily unfolding bouquet of flowers, in whose abundance I distinctly identify a sweet violet, powdery iris, and a beautifully old-fashioned rose.
Here we probably have the culprits for a certain soapiness before us, which I do not perceive as unpleasant or sharp, certainly not as particularly noble.
A perfume of similar composition was occasionally worn by my grandmother on special occasions - the images and stories that arise in my memory hit me unexpectedly in the heart and bring tears to my eyes.
Thus, the past olfactorily guides me through this day and proves to be surprisingly enduring, which I would not have expected from this rather simple, straightforward, and not overly profound little water.
Only many hours later do the flowers release their scent and make way for the earthy-soft base, which gains warmth from sandalwood, but now shows no sweetness on me anymore.
At this stage, I can almost imagine the scent on a man rather than a woman - it comes across as classic and distinguished, very gentleman-like, and admittedly a bit old-fashioned, which does not harm it at all.
Certainly, "1905" is not my fragrance, regardless of my personal grandmother associations, but in its fresh cleanliness, it appears touching and lovable, romantic like a relic from the good old days, which it indeed is and to which I occasionally cling with a tear in my buttonhole.

Pure Soap
When I received the sample today and just sprayed it into the cap for a first test, I was thrilled. So delicate, so bright, so powdery. Exactly my taste.
But since I was already wearing a fragrance, I saved the real test for the evening.

Just as a reminder, it’s not enough to spray into the cap; you never get the true scent in your nose. Not even a hint. In my opinion, this also applies to test strips.

When I sprayed the evening scent from 1905 onto my wrist, I almost dropped the vial.

WHAT IS THAT?
What is hitting me so intensely and intrusively in the nose?
I was fully tuned to delicate and powdery-floral, and this soap nearly knocked me over, quite literally.
Yes, soap! Super strong fragrance.

This soap is driving me crazy now. Is it the light blue Fa or the pink Lux? And the one from back in the day. I want to know! I don’t know how these artificial soaps smell today. But back then, there were always Fa or Lux in the West packages. *gg*

Now, I have nothing against soap, just that I use homemade soaps today, and they definitely smell better than industrial soaps. By the way, they are also better for the skin.

This soapy scent is now constantly rising to my nose.
I don’t mean that this scent smells soapy; it IS soap. Hard to understand? It smells like that damned soap, Fa or Lux. It annoys me. I’m going crazy here. *crazy look*

The scent was released in 1905, and now I see more clearly. Back then, washing was not very advanced. Perfume had to step in, and with soap perfume, you smell clean and well-groomed. I understand.

I want to be honest, the perfume itself doesn’t smell bad, just like soap and also powder, and that rarely smells bad.
But I don’t need to spend almost 100 € on soap. I’d rather go to the drugstore and get myself Fa or Lux.

A Carriage Ride Through Green Meadows
We are (imaginarily) in the year 1905, automobiles have been invented but are still rarely seen. This era of Art Nouveau is still characterized by carriages, and in one of them, drawn by two horses, I am now sitting. Dressed as they did "back then," together with another lady and a gentleman. The long skirt carefully spread over both legs, so that no spot of the (well-stocked) calf is visible.
We are heading out into the countryside, along a wide avenue that eventually leads to a manor, but until then we pass by meadows and groves that shine in the early summer sun. Dew-covered and shimmering like pearls. A fragrance wafts over and delights the spirits. Of grass and violets, of roses and jasmine. And this mingles with the pleasant scent of freshly washed blouses and skirts, trousers and shirts. Always using only the best soap, and the laundry is dried outside on an airy line.
We also pass ancient oaks, from whose branches and twigs gray-green moss threads hang down. Filigree and seemingly "woven" with a special pattern. Wonderful to behold and wonderfully "tinting" and fairy-tale fragrant.
Now we have arrived at the manor, a servant is already waiting at the open door.
"Now we have arrived," says the friendly lady beside me. And the gentleman, her husband: "You are warmly invited to spend your holiday week here."...
And as we enter, I can recognize a "familiar" scent. Exactly THE one from the ride here. And I catch a brief glimpse into a "dressing room." On a dresser stands a simple but beautiful perfume bottle that catches my eye.
My hostess notices this, leads me into the room, and proudly and slightly amused reaches for the bottle:
"The latest creation from Paris"... a quick spray... "Voila... "Detaille 1905"... I commissioned it to always have the beautiful scent around me, even when I am in the city!"...
"Yes," I say, "a wonderful idea"...
Delightfully "old-fashioned" and soapy-mossy-floral-CHYPRE... with astonishing longevity and pleasant sillage. And charmingly "modest" in freshly washed attire and long skirt and hair elegantly pinned up....
An "Original" from "back then"!
