A beautiful mysterious resinous-fruity-floral perfume from Mathilde Laurent.
This review is based on a full bottle of La Panthere Parfum that I bought in 2024 from a US grey market seller as a gift to my daughter. The iconic panther head adorns the bottle, a motif that comes from Cartier’s panther line of jewelry. Yesterday, I had worn Pasha de Cartier, which inspired me to try another perfume designed by Mathilde Laurent. Though officially this is a women’s perfume, I find it to be a unisex scent with a strong Asian personality.

Just as with Pasha de Cartier, the perfumer does not lead us by the nose by listing all the notes in the olfactory pyramid. Laurent and Cartier instead put out the following enticing but vague description. "Gardenia is colored and warmed with apricot notes of osmanthus. The chypre accord intensifies, like a caress on the skin." Perhaps this reflects the perfumer’s desire to let us discover the myriad accords on our own.

Though the description of this perfume as a fruity-floral chypre with musk is reasonable, it is also insufficient. The major opening notes are bergamot, floral notes, apricot and a resin that could be labdanum or camphor. Perhaps, this is the chypre facet of this perfume, though the bergamot is too weak to make this a chypre. As osmanthus is a disclosed accord for La Panthere, the apricot I smell could be coming from it. Similarly, the mild floral notes could be gardenia. The citrus notes in the opening disappear quickly leaving behind the rest of the so-called chypre accord. Whatever they are, the heart notes smell fantastic on my skin for a long time. The base notes and dry down are just a subdued version of the heart notes. I do not notice anything new emerging in the end.

La Panthere Parfum shows excellent performance without being obnoxious in its intensity and projection. It lasts on my arm for 4-6 hours and almost 8 hours on my clothes. It is better to spray once on your clothes to sustain the heart notes longer. The sillage is appropriate for a social setting that is not too wild. I can see this on a mature young person of any gender. Though not young myself, I plan to use it often for its elegant, beautiful and mysterious persona. La Panthere Parfum is definitely worth a full bottle if you are in the market for a resinous fruity floral perfume that doesn’t project any of these characteristics too much.

A fruity, modern take on traditional women’s chypres
One of the *few* fragrances with a prominent moss note that I actually enjoy wearing. Moss tends to smell like straight up dirt on my skin, so it’s not typically a note that I look for in fragrances I want to wear and smell like. I don’t know how, but Cartier managed to make this fragrance extremely well balanced: it’s fruity, sweet, and fun, but very grown up and vintage feeling at the same time?

From first spray, you get a bright and juicy apricot, that’s made milkier from the osmanthus and a blast of earth moss all at once. It’s not disorienting, but it’s definitely interesting in the best way possible. As apricot stays at the center throughout its wear, the patchouli adds to the wet mossiness without making it too “dirty”. The gardenia and musk linger in the background but aren’t super strong and perceivable on me.

This one is a lowkey stunner, made for the classiest of ladies who always looks fabulous. It’s a modern day chypre that pays homage to the old school women’s perfumes, especially with the look of the bottle. I only have a decant that I wear occasionally, but each time I do wear it, I’m always amazed with how much I enjoy it. Outstanding performance and definitely a gorgeous one for cool and humid climates.

peach rings and baby wipes - not bad though!
I love osmanthus.
And I love oakmoss.
But:
The opening accord here is a bit juicy, sweet and tart compared to the delicate, almost suedey scent of the real flower. It's larger than life, more peach ring than apricot, and diffuses quickly and beautifully.
After a few minutes drydown, there's a less obvious, more realistic apricot that sticks around, along with a musk which unfortunately reminds me of baby wipes.
The oakmoss is barely there.

Ultimately I love the idea - you'd never think that a Parfum would be more topnote heavy than the EdP La Panthère Eau de Parfum - but I wanted to see something different and richer, less fruity, in the execution. I think I ultimately was looking for a different perfume. Luckily I only sampled.
Without the weight of my expectations to drag it down, it's still a nice perfume. More heavy-handed and definitely stronger in sillage than the EdP. It'd appeal to gourmand lovers.

Peach-Colored Purebred Cat
Since I got to know and fear the namesake "Panthére de Cartier Parfum" in the 90s, I can certainly compare both, and it turns out - while the 90s Panthére (Parfum) instilled fear in me and the environment, the 2020 Panthére (Parfum) moves elegantly on quiet velvet paws.
Initially, I was still unsure what to think of Velvet Paw P.; I detected very little and was already traumatized again by my nose. I thought I could recognize a peach note that I liked, as Femme by Rochas and Mitsouko by Guerlain are classics where you can also find "peach," and I like both. However, I later found out that Panthére has apricot in its scent notes. Well, at least.
Then I detected Osmanthus, which can also smell paper-dry and velvety, further enhancing this fragrance.
(Very delicate, very quiet for a perfume, especially considering what Mathilde Laurent has created in the past: the unusually powerful early scents Pampelune from Guerlain's Aqua Allegoria line and my special favorite Ylang-Vanille, as well as the much-missed Terracotta Voile d'Été! But that was almost 20 years ago, and - like the 90s Panthére - some of those have long since passed into the eternal hunting grounds.)
A teen note lies over the fragrance, similar to Neroli Outrenoir, also a beautiful daytime fragrance that you never tire of, even though it is very present. Ladylike chypre, if I may say so, Panthére develops into a subtle, only minimally floral noble scent. Gardenia gives it a little exotic kick but remains peaceful. The performance is appropriate, the scent lingers for a long time. A pleasant, purring surprise...

A true, classic retro chypre at its finest.
''A picture of a beautiful lady in fur and gold forms in my mind, she knows her worth and is very dignified.''

La Panthère starts like a heavy chypre - classic, stylish.

It is rich, multifaceted.

All notes are in the right balance, there is no phase in which it becomes uninteresting.

The fragrance evolves over time from a harsh and bitter chypre sound to a rounded sweet, fruity-floral tone.

La Panthère is a vivid example of what a modern chypre can look like.

This is absolutely stunning! I prefer it over the original. Sexy warm gardenia chypre with just the right amount of dense sweetness.

I love me a good chypre but they usually smell just a bit dusty and old. This one has the right balance: perfectly modern and beautiful.

How lovely! A new, really good perfume. Gardenia, Osmanthus, Apricot on a fine Chypre base. Bravo, Mathilde Laurent. A must-buy.

I think it's well done! Osmanthus, rather herbal-fruity peach, a nice lightly soapy rose, slightly green-earthy base.

What an elegant, velvety scent. Old Parisian chic, fabric wallpapers, flowing dresses come to mind. Warm, flattering.

The honeyed sweetness of the Osmanthus flower combined with classic elements of great perfumes.
For fans of Mitsouko, Magie Noire & Co.
