Armchair adventure
"La Panthère" by Mathilde Laurent for Cartier is by no means a remake of the discontinued "Panthère" from 1987, which was a dense powerhouse-fragrance. If you expect a "parfum de femme fatale", don't be disappointed, the new Cartier is civilised and starts with fruity top-notes of apple and rhubarb, quite transparent and not heavy. Then the star of the composition is brought into play, Laurent says it's gardenia, but it's not the usual kind of gardenia many of us know. The gardenia in "La Panthère" is understated in its opulence, it's vague and amorphous, somewhat "unreal". Fortunately, the floral accord is teamed with oakmoss and musk (a modern fruity chypre?), and when all the notes have unfolded, the perfume seems to glide and fade into the dusk without any jungle snarls. Anyone from 25 to 100 can lose themselves in the subtle elegance of "La Panthère" and seasons don't pose a problem either, "La Panthère" is equal to any occasion and all climats. For Cartier devotees it fills the gap between the "Eau de Cartier" range with its clean simplicity and the soliflore-composition of "Le Baiser". "La Panthère" by the great Mathilde Laurent is innovative without being conversely complex, intense without being overwhelming and pervasive without aiming at any great depth. A nice armchair adventure, with the wild animal, la panthère sauvage, at a safe distance.

Sometimes not knowing is a good thing…
I admit that I have yet to meet the original La Panthère, which is such a shame since so many in here speak so highly of it. On the other hand I am pleased, since it gives me the possibility to write a review on this without the original in mind. In my opinion, this new scent from 2014 deserves all the positive words I can think of, because it is a true gem. It is in my top 20, and I wear it often.
Cartier is a house, that seems to know what I am looking for in a perfume. With masterpieces such as Must de Cartier, So Pretty and Le Baiser du Dragon I am a huge fan. This Panthère is no exception.
It starts out a lot like Balmain’s Ivoire, even though they share none of the top notes. Fresh, fruity to some degree and mood lifting. A wonderful way to start the day. After 15-20 minutes the scent turns more flowery with the gardenia showing up. You can still recognize the top notes but it turns sweeter. Finally, after some hours you get a whiff of musk blended in. On my skin it lasts for at least 4 hours, but sometimes I can smell it on my clothes the next day. Marvellous fragrance.

Heads Off, Anyone?
Oakmoss can't save this heavily fruity Gardenia from smelling light weight. The fruits are well done, mind you, but with Gardenia alone there's just no heft. The Musk ketones don't throb. The oakmoss is merely interesting rather than a compelling presence as in real chypres. All in all, I felt like I'd fallen down the rabbit hole and would see the Mad Hatter any second. Only problem? Not into childhood garden parties anymore. Wonder what the Red Queen's wearing?

Pinkies up
Honestly I might not be nearly sophisticated enough to pull off wearing this. It’s a modern chypre that could easily compete with old school chypres. The rhubarb, gardenia and oak moss are a thrilling combination. Smells like money. It doesn’t smell like a 21st century perfume. This is voluptuous. The velvet cushion of floral chypres.

Modern Retro Chypre
If the seventies chypre was leather and tweed, this version is pink suede and fruity dust.
It's light, minimal, and (smells) completely synthetic, but it has nuance and movement.
How did madame Laurent conjure something that feels so modern - and invokes the spirit of chypre at the same time?
Is it some kind of postmodern magic?

An instant classic, and exactly what a modern chypre should be: chic, elegant and sophisticated, with an exquisite mossy trail. Perfection.

A successful take on Retro-moderne. There is an almost edible quality to it.sometimes it wears you

Grown-up, but young at heart. Casually attractive without going for sexy or flirty. Not bad for a fruity floral, a bit sweet in the end

Very modern interpretation of a chypre. Smooth, sweet and heady white floral + fruit over a mild bed of moss.

Gentle dried fruits with subtle stawberry rhubarb. This is how to wear fruit without being cloying. Lovers of rhubarb need this one.

Ostentatious well-preserved old lady. Highly musky chypre, cat marking-like performance bordering on offensive. 50+ or man repellant.

Dries to a familiarly spicy musk with a ghost of patchouli on my skin, with none of the fruity notes. Enjoyable, but I won't buy full size.

La Panthère gave me high hopes, but it’s extremely musky on me, and something in there caused a severe headache and nausea within 5 minutes.

Modern fruity chypre? I should love it. But I just get old hand lotion gone rancid. My old nemesis, gardenia, RUINING EVERYTHING as usual :(
